One of the things that makes Marty's movies so great is the authenticity in the casting. I grew up in new York around these kind of people(my own family members & their friends from when they were younger that they tried to avoid later in life after having wives, kids, and options but really couldn't altogether because we still lived in the old neighborhoods and they couldn't disrespect people they survived the old days with whenever called on and or bumped into in person) everything is authentic down to the shirt collars and makeup the women wore. Everyone else's movies are either overly exaggerated or watered down/white washed to being as vanilla as possible. Plus he always nails the duality of the lives these guys live which only helps make them ring more true to even people that have no idea about that life and culture. We were Sicilians(us kids being the first generation born here) living in harlem. People don't realize how equally Italian as it was black harlem was. All of the area that is Spanish Harlem was mostly italians and even though movies want to portray certain eras in a particular way, it wasn't like that. Yeah they would break each others balls with racist terms they all got along, were friends and could depend on each other to have each other's backs from outsiders. You know who both had problems with? The Irish(of that time) who hated everyone and almost exclusively made up and controlled the police force. you would think they wouldn't be like that after being treated how they were when they got here but no. Crazy thing is somehow they all ended up marrying each other. as the Puerto Ricans started moving in to the Italian side they also started marrying each other to. When people say instituitions like the police department are founded on racism and get shouted down like no it's not, it's just a few bad apples(which may be the truth now), let me tell you something just using the nypd as an example. It was almost exclusively Irish and these guys were racists to their core. So as the force starts to take in more and more new people of different ethnicities, etc they were learning the job from and working within systems these people set up. An example of this same core can be seen from the other side of the law in the Aryan nation which was formed by these same kind of guys even though it was on the West coast which is why you see them with all the shamrock tats.alright history lesson to nobody rambling rant is done. It's just these old movies make me think of the old days whenever I think about what makes them so great(well part of it anyway)

It's set in Italy and the female character is proud to show old parks and architecture. Bruce's character thinks it's a waste of space. Better to build skyscrapers and charge rent. You know, Chinese mentality. That was largely the appeal to the diaspora Chinese, including Hong Kong and East Asia. Bruce remains a political symbol to this day. Man, I had that whole movie memorized even though Max Cady was fucking crazy, MS gave his rendition of the character a legit reason to seek revenge (unlike the original). The scene in once upon a time in hollywood where brad pitt makes bruce lee look kinda foolish is loosely based on real events....instead of 'cliff booth' aka pitt , in real life it was 2 time national grappling champion judo gene lebell that taught bruce lee that he needed more than just fancy kicks to be an effective all around mixed martial artist...lee's standup was beautiful but he lacked any type of ground game until he met, tangled with and even eventually trained with judo gene where he learned all about take downs, arm locks and choke holds...
this is taken from a site called ozy which explains a small bit of the story...'' According to LeBell, Lee was a working stiff (rough) on the set of The Green Hornet and was kicking the shit out of the stuntmen. They couldn’t convince him that he could go easy and it would still look great on film. The show’s stunt coordinator, Bennie Dobbins, needed a ringer to deal with Lee, so he called in Judo Gene. LeBell says when he got to the set, Dobbins told him to put Lee “in a headlock or something.”
So LeBell went up and grabbed Lee. “He started making all those noises that he became famous for,” LeBell said, “but he didn’t try to counter me, so I think he was more surprised than anything else.”
Then LeBell lifted Lee onto his back in what’s called a fireman’s carry and ran around the set with him.
“Put me down or I’ll kill you!” Lee screamed.
“I can’t put you down or you’ll kill me,” LeBell said, holding Lee there as long as he dared before putting him down, saying, “Hey, Bruce, don’t kill me. Just kidding, champ.
After training with LeBell, Lee incorporated grappling moves into his film fighting. He finishes off Chuck Norris with a chokehold in Way of the Dragon (1972) and beats a young Sammo Hung with an armbar in Enter the Dragon (1973).”''
sorry for such a long post but i figured id let you guys in on what really happened w bruce lee in the fictional film from QT
....and to end this on a funny note...mr. gene lebell ran into another movie making martial artist.... a young and very delusional steven seagal ...seagal bragged about how no one could put him him in a hold or put him in a lock that he couldnt easily escape from...well the ever classy judo gene not only got the aikido practitioner in a choke hold but put him to sleep and mr. seagal promptly and literally shit himself...hopefully ol' steve had an extra pair of pants with him that day. ;-)
