      @Peter Evans- I thought The same. They say that all he knew how to operate were the yoke and the throttle (and fortunately he knew how to use the radio), but would it hurt to take 10 seconds to explain the rudder pedals? But I doubt that we heard every transmission. They may have spent more time explaining the controls. They may have spent time explaining the basics of landing the craft. And actually, if they did do that, I so wish that they would have included it in this video. That is the most interesting part!

    Good for you, John! Not everyone can even land a simulator with no risk of death after multiple tries in simulated broad daylight. Here you have a man at 77 facing imminent death. I myself am 77 and believe me not the man I was 55 years ago or even 55 months ago. Despite a few flying lessons 55 years ago would have a big problem not panicking in John's situation I. John's voice never caught, he spoke in clear sentences with no foul language. Never fumferred. I bet his heart rate never got over 100. I think the reason he survived is he kept his cool, had faith in his emergency instructors and did what he was told when he was told. I think controlling his emotions was the deciding element. We are our own worst enemies in almost any endeavor from learning skiing, tennis, golf, teaching our kids or trading stocks. From what we heard from the people on the ground and in the chopper, everyone spoke calmly, authoritatively, clearly and with one voice. The last thing John needed was to have his confidence shaken with a debate on what approach to take and what procedures to follow. Kudos to all involved despite some of the comments below. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting and this one ended up tasting pretty damn fine.

    • @davidhoman3807
      @davidhoman3807 3 роки тому +6

      They never should’ve attempted to land on the unlit runway. I don’t know if John could hear the lady talking, it sounded like some of the microphones were isolated from some of the talkers, when she was saying oh he’s not going to make it or the guy that said this is not going to end well. If John heard all that it wasn’t very good positive reinforcement. Thinking it is one thing, saying it out loud is another.
      (added 1 day later)
      It seemed to me that he probably was not going to get the landing light on (172 only has one). Even with it on, that light does not light anything up until you get real close to The object. I did not hear anyone tell him how to turn on the landing light, it would’ve been a little out-of-the-way for him because it is to the left and below the left yoke, but certainly doable.
      Also I don’t I think they tried to tell him how to turn on the panel lights. I would have to listen to it again but I think John did ask about turning them on, or something like that.

      The job he had for many years served him well, because he certainly sounded like he was a pilot, I got the impression that ATC was impressed with his vocabulary and although asking if he were a pilot of course was a standard question, you could almost hear it in their voices that they had a hard time believing that he was not a pilot.

      Doris Day flew a plane and landed in the movie. She was an airline stewardess as they were referred to back then and it was a 4 engine passenger propeller plane. I used to travel this way with my parents. Back then it was real food and used real plates, cups and saucers and cutlery. Everyone dressed up. I did like it. Nowadays? Hoping when I am on a flight there aren't any problems with passengers. I am 71 so boy lots of changes in behavior.

      The human body is designed to last at least 120 years. We have become hostile spirits within our own bodies thus disease and old age sets in much earlier. Besides, nobody wants to be an economical slave for another 40 years. Slavery is exhausting. 70 is just over middle age. 🤓 As slaves tho.. you’re right. It’s old.
