  • Welcome back! Today we’re explaining How Antonio Conte Will Finish in the Top 4 by taking a look at his 21/22 Spurs in Tactics Explained!
    Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
The appointment of Antonio Conte has been the best bit of business Spurs have done in years. Since November, the Italian has transformed Spurs from completely lacking any ideas or direction into a team that resembles Antonio Conte’s principles: Defensively resolute, difficult to beat and extremely dangerous in the transition. Statistically, he’s also made them the third best team in the country but how has he done this?
Tactically, Conte has set up in a 3-4-3. In possession, Conte has Spurs build out from the back largely using the central midfielders and centre backs to provide a solid 3-2 platform. This allows the wing backs to move high and wide, almost becoming wingers and allowing the front 3 to provide a constant threat with their movement. What’s noticeable about Spurs under Conte is that there’s a genuine plan in possession. They build out from their goalkeeper to invite the opposition’s press, creating more space for their advanced players to operate in. Alternatively if the opposition don’t commit bodies high up the pitch, Conte’s men use their width to build through the flanks. To stop simple progression the opposition have to shift over which creates space for the opposite side wing back.

In attack, a big aspect of Conte’s Spurs is attacking through their wing backs. Back 3s create a natural overload against back 4s as the wing backs can easily create a front 5 by joining the forwards. The wing backs also create chances in the final third through wing play. Often we see the ball side winger combine with the wing back whilst the other two forwards and the far side wing back load the box. But the main reason for Tottenham’s goalscoring is their front 3. Conte’s 3-4-3 creates an even better platform for Heung Min Son and Harry Kane to operate in. With no number 10 and wing backs to constantly hold the width, Kane is able to drop into the unoccupied attacking midfield zone and Son is closer to the striker position. Meanwhile, January signing Dejan Kulusevski has completed Conte’s front 3. Like last season, a lot of Spurs attacks start by going into Kane who drops off the line whilst the wingers stretch the opposition vertically with movement in behind.
Without the ball, Spurs are a classic Conte side. When they lose possession one goalside player tends to press the ball to slow the opposition’s transition whilst their teammates return to their defensive positions. Their mid and low blocks are a compact 5-4-1 as Spurs restrict the space between their deepest lines. Spurs restrict central progression and remain patient, looking to force their opponents into mistakes or risky passes. Often the wingers hold their positions whilst one of the central midfielders joins the striker to apply pressure to the ball. The idea is to funnel the opposition out wide where they have little passing options, forcing a longer, low percentage pass or a turnover.
Then when Spurs regain the ball they counter directly and quickly.
► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
With the most in form strike partnership in the Premier League, a resolute defensive structure and one of the best coaches in world football, Spurs are alongside Chelsea as the best of the rest and should expect Champions League football next season.
But what do you think? Have you been impressed by Conte’s Spurs? And where do you think they’ll finish this season? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Pericic joining will be a huge plus for us going into the new season. A creative and experienced wingback who has played under Conte earlier. It also looks likely that Djed Spence will join, appears to have what both Emerson and Doherty are lacking, good crossing and creativity.

In my opinion if you play a back three against Spurs, each player in your defense will mark a forward but if you have someone in front of Kane like Brighton did with Bissouma, there won't be a reason for a Centre back to follow Kane into midfield when he's dropping deep to receive passes from midfield and that won't leave space in behind for Son to run in to or for Kane to do flick ons or those passes he likes playing because he's marked out of the game. This will force them to use their wing backs more and they're not that good, so I really think going forward the back three is the way to go against Spurs.

Kulusevski is great! The fact that Allegri in Juventus often left him on the bench explains even more the difference between the coaches in evaluating the potential of a player. Lukaku (bought back from Chelsea for 100 million) employed by Conte has achieved his best season, with Tuchel very often remained on the bench! Some coaches have many resources at their disposal (see Guardiola and Tuchel) but are not able to exploit them to the full

Its amazing to have Conte at Tottenham!!! Still only June, Paratici & Conte are just getting warmed up with the rest of the players they will be bringing to North London! Building a improved team with the depth needed to compete in every competition, plus the new 5 sub rule in PL . In regards to his question "Should Man United have hired Conte" , I am sure many United fans wished they did. Though his no B.S. coaching style & how he got rid of the players he didn't think fit his system, were lazy/had bad attitude, etc... at Spurs; You have to wonder who, or how many players he would have sent packing in January at Man United? Though its been said Plenty by all Tottenham Fans/Supporters: "Thank You Manchester United , beating us 3-0 when Spurs showed nothing in that match (would have been better to have the U20 team out there) and as a result was the final game with Nuno in charge of Tottenham. And due to you or the Man United front office still having a little faith in OLE' you kept him as coach a little longer leaving Tottenham as the perfect Club for a coach named Antonio Conte to come in and take over as the head coach. " So without Man United's hesitation over what to do with their coach, it allowed Tottenham to make up for the circus that was a search for new coach since back in April when Jose was sent packing (yes a week before the League Cup Final). And we showed you our appreciation by taking it easy when we played you in reverse fixture at Old Trafford.🙄🙄 For real Spurs didn't take it easy at all and were the better team that day; the only problem was Ronaldo still has games where he shows why he is 1 of the best to ever play the sport. Final score Ronaldo 3-2 over Spurs. So hopefully that makes everything Even!!!

@Francis Earl I agree with everything you said. Also remember we were close or at least interviewed him in summer, so whatever wasn’t agreed on Levy obviously came around. I’m sure Paratici helped a bit too!!
Of course I was being a bit sarcastic whenever I wrote that. But so much more we could say about Man United, and forget on the field, the fact the stadium had multiple leaks, supposedly the largest home for rats in all of Manchester ( don’t know how true that is, but has horrible rodent issue), front office, among so many other things that are embarrassing!!
I like you saying Tottenham being the more modern club. That’s very true!

No mention of the fact we consistently lose the midfield battle, since the two central midfielders get overrun by teams who play with three central midfielders? As demonstrated against Middlesbrough, Brighton, and Brentford (to name just 3), this is the major weakness of Conte's 343, compared to teams like Chelsea, who play the same formation, but still win the midfield battle by having inside forwards like Mount who can drop into the midfield area, allowing them to control possession.

I think Conte’s style fits Spurs much better, whereas Ten Hag/Pochettino fits United’s players better. Spurs already had the basis for a 343 system and completed it with Kulusevski, but United lacks a right wing back and players who could function in a double pivot. Also United is built around Fernandes, who needs to be in a CAM or free 8 role, which wouldn’t work with Conte because we’ve seen that he doesn’t do well when asked to play too advanced, but in a 4231 he thrives as the 10. Ten Hag’s UCL semis team had the CF and CAM rotate as a second striker partnership, which in theory should suit Ronaldo and Fernandes. I think Conte is a great coach but he would’ve had far more rebuilding to do at United to reform the team to fit him, compared to Ten Hag or Poch.

@@cigenbell5849 I don’t think that midfield would work because both Fred and Pogba are defined by their attacking tendencies and would leave the 3 CB exposed, where as Hojbjerg and Bentancur are naturally more defensive. Fred is more of a forward presser whilst Pogba is lazy defensively. Bruno would be limited positionally as the right winger which is the difficulty he had with the 4222 under Rangnick since he’s tactically anarchic at times, and if Conte switched to a 3412 then neither Rashford or Sancho would thrive as a second striker to Ronaldo and Cavani has been out of action all season. Conte would benefit Maguire, Dalot, and Telles more, not so much our midfield and attack.

      @lhy8373 2 роки тому

@@kendrick6740U do know Pogba used to play under Conte at Juv? This “lazy defending” is because he is not motivated to play. In order to play for Conte you first need players that work hard. Doesn’t have to be very talented(but that is a plus), as long as you work hard for the team, it would do well. Maguire plays well in this 3 at back just like how England national team does it. I think a formation of like this would be the standard then you pick whoever fills in when injured or out of form

Conte had to get rid of some players in Spurs that were “lazy” or just didn’t work in the team like Lo Celso and Ndombele. Both are talented players. ManU are supposed to be easier to build because they have more budget not Spurs. You just need players to have the right mentality and the team will thrive.

Also the wings back of ManU are better overall than Spurs… So don’t tell me ManU is harder to build, he had to experiment with spurs earlier on in November and December to analyze the team. If he does that for ManU and starts getting results you wouldn’t be saying this.

Pogba didn’t have to do anywhere near as much work as he has to in a double pivot.
Also Sancho has never truly played as a second striker. Maybe on paper he could, but with Dortmund he was always a wide player or a 10. Sancho is best when he’s able to get on the ball and dribble or pass, which would be limited for him if he’s put right up inside the box. Ronaldo has the same issue, he’s someone who likes to make runs into the box but isn’t someone who truly thrives in the box like a proper 9 such as Cavani or Lewandowski. Maybe Sancho could function in that capacity, but it’s not likely based on what we’ve seen from his preferred play style.

I know that Spurs fans hated Emerson Royal this season due to his limitations as an attacking wing back but I freaking loved that kid. What I saw was a player who worked incredibly hard every second he was on the pitch and could shut down attackers coming from his side. Emerson wants to be here which was great to see after years of watching guys like Dele Alli and Serge Aurier sleepwalking through games.
Emerson also made some pretty excellent runs on attack and made the opposing side work like hell to keep up with him.
I dont know if Emerson's attacking ability, especially his passing and crossing abilities, ever catch up with his enthusiasm but a winning team needs to have guys like him around to push players during training as well as in the locker room.
