How LOUD is our workshop?

- Since scaling up from my old garage workshop, to a 'proper' industrial unit, we are now running multiple noisy machines including CNC machine, compressor, wood waste heater, panelsaw, and multiple dust extractors.
Long term hearing loss is a real risk we need to avoid, and the starting point is to understand the noise levels involved. So when I was approached to review a noise meter, the timing made sense to take up the offer.

(Also, by the way, the headband I'm wearing is working really well for me as a bluetooth headset for my phone, you can get it here: amzn.to/3UX3u5P (That's an amazon affiliate link) - but please note this is not a noise caqncelling device, just something I happened to be wearing while making this video! Still, the built in headphones are very comfortable and it provides a bit of warmth in the winter)

r/active noise-cancelling headphones and ear protection. It is my understanding that they don’t provide adequate attenuation beyond the passive protection benefits of any over the ear or in ear head/earphone. Some protection is also provided because you don’t need to raise the volume as much, but the noise-cancelling waveform generated doesn’t stop the sound waves damaging the cells and membranes in the ear. I switched to using noise-cancelling in-ears in the workshop and then adding a traditional 3M/Peltor ear defender over the top when using noisy machines, to get the best of both worlds.

How does it compare to a sound level app on your smartphone?
That’s a very good question. Phone app probably does the job just as well!!
