Brit Marling Georgetown University Senior Convocation Speech 2013

  • Netflix's The OA creator Brit Marling, whom I respect, love, and adore, delivers one of the most inspiring speeches I have ever heard at a graduation ceremony. She touches on the importance of friendship, perseverance, and making your own destiny.
    One of my favorite quotes...
    "When we were all at our wits end with this journey, when I had stopped talking to my parents, because I could no longer explain to them what I was doing out there, losing myself, losing my life, living in this collective fantasy, encouraged only by each other to keep going. Finally, we all stopped trying to break in. I stopped auditioning, we all started writing. We decided that we didn't need to wait for permission or validation to make our work. That all we had to do is go back to making films the way we made them at Georgetown. When security guards from the National Gallery had chased us around the mall."
    Original Description From Source:
    Actress and filmmaker Brit Marling (C’05) told the Class of 2013 to maintain the friendships and relationships they cultivated during their undergraduate career as they enter the next stage of the lives.

    yo, she is the only one who could have ever played The OA. I overestimated how much of the OA character was a script, vs. how much of it was her. the character feels like it was based on her rather than her acting like someone else, and this shows it.

    I think she's the person that's touched me the most through moving pictures. At first I thought it was just because I was a nerd and liked abstract questions about the ultimate nature of reality. But I think I've come to the realization that she has somehow managed to remind me of some of the most important things in life that I've seriously overlooked and neglected. That someone can do this at all is impressive. That someone can do this through fiction is inspiring. That someone can do this through an extremely young medium a million times more effectively than even the best movie and TV writers and directors is truly singular. I wish I could become like her.

    • @KayraJordyn
      @KayraJordyn 3 роки тому +4

      If it’s somebody’s truth, is it really fiction? Art imitates reality imitates art...
      I’m in the same boat, J. She seems to remind me of the embodiment of a Soul, the deepest aching, yearning questions, hopes, fears. The seeking, crying out for truth we discourage because it doesn’t (always) put food in bellies, clothes on backs and smiles on the faces of polite society, of the uncomfortable, the fearful among us. Fear drives our decisions so often, and it will crush the soul in each of us IF we allow it. I find it as dangerous a motivator as apathy. We crave more for a reason. As ordinary as I think it could be, it is certainly refreshing in this day and society to see someone embrace that instead of chastise or smother it.

I actually started tearing up when she mentioned the station wagon road trip to california with the family that you build, because it reminds me so much of the boys and BBA. brit really puts her entire heart into her storytelling, and the result comes across as indescribably genuine and moving. her ability to use the medium of film to communicate the rawness of human emotion is beautiful. Oh wowww. super super super inspiring and touching. Watching this in 2019, and the values that she mentioned about connection and tribe are so evidently portrayed in her works of The OA. Thank you for inspiring us Brit Marling :)

    Became a fan of Brit after watching The OA. She's awesome. Great actress, excellent writer, amazingly brilliant, and gorgeous inside and out. I would love to have a drink and a chat with her.

    You know... she touched all of these people’s lives. She reached out for her dreams and ran fast enough to catch them, even when she felt like she didn’t know what she was doing, she had her friends and family and a whole world to explore and her own to create. She’s a good example of living a life she wants and truly living it with love. She’s so cool yo haha! 🙏❤️

    The deeply loving act of sharing what you have come to understand. Throughout my being, dreaming, chaos and sorrow I return to particular people who are communicating a language of higher awareness and I reconnect. Brit Marling and her family are the kinds of people who as a highly attuned and deeply creative child hopes exist in the world. Thank you for communicating what you have and are.
