Garmin's Failed 'E' Strategy /// Fenix E and Instinct E
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- At the end of August Garmin introduced the Fenix 8 with a number of different iterations of the Fenix but Garmin also did something new and released something called the “Fenix E”. The “E” in the product name means “Essential” as in this is a Fenix but with only the essential features. But are these new Essential devices working for Garmin?

Just a quick correction: Neither the Garmin Fenix E or the Epix Gen 2 (standard edition) have Multi-band GPS. It was only the titanium edition that had multi-band gps on the Epix gen 2.
Great video, just finished watching it all the way through. As always, your video production is crazy high, but this was arguably one of the most concise and clear storytelling you've done to date. I loved the little "no, I'm not talking about..." tidbits. Nitpickers corner backhands if you will. 🤣 Oh, and thanks for the shout-out at the end!
High production but riddled with errors and mistakes. 🎯 But if Garmin could just set the price point in that $400 -$500 range for something like the Fenix E than I think it'd at least give people pause before they hop over and buy the Epix Gen 2. But $800?!? 😬 Hope island life is going well for you Ray!
@@mlegrand I woudlnt' worry about multi-band error versus not, because the $409 price you showed in the video was actually the Titanium version, which does have multiband. Which makes the argument of yours/ours even stronger, since Fenix E doesn't have it (despite being $800, somehow, inexplicably).
Matt! This was so good. So easy to follow with your graphics and narrative. But yeah... why do these E's exist again? 😂
Ha!!! I *think* this strategy could be salvaged. Garmin could lower the E price point and make sure it's a little more competitive with it's features set. So if the Fenix E skiped the mic, speaker and dive feature but had everything else and was $650 ish. I think people might at least pause before buying something else. 🤷♂️
Garmin's biggest competition is Garmin- spot on! Their pricing is crazy, they don't support 1 year old model with latest software, the blue triangle fiasco.. everything is wrong except the battery life on Garmin.
I own Fenix 6 pro, Edge 530 and AWU2. I hope Apple and Strava collab more and if Strava lets you create and export the route on Apple Watch, I can give up on Garmin. Battery ain't an issue for me as I am full time corporate guy and part time runner.
As always, top notch video quality- always look forward to your content!
Thank you Apar! The Apple / Strava think is super frustrating. Hopefully Apple will consider an update. 🤞🏻
Matt Matt Matt, this was really helpful. I wasn't really aware of what the "E" models were, thanks for informing.
Like DC says, I loved all the B roll of the watches and their associated love marks. I should inspect my watch and see what I can find with the macro lens.
My last watch died when the charging interface stopped working. If that doesn't kill a watch, what are the typical things that 'die' on a watch and cause you to get a new one?
AND- revelation! Remember how I told you my watch was using more battery than I thought it should in the "indoor ride" mode? Its okay if you don't remember- just priming. I put two and two together, the backlight was on a 'gesture' mode, so the light was turning on and off through out rides. That's what was killing the battery so much faster!
I feel like a genius! No need for applause...
Great to hear from you and to see all the love you're getting from all corners of the world. You deserve it all.
XOXO
Great to hear from you also Kit!!! I think watches die for a variety of reasons but lithium ion batteries tend to start to fade after 2-3 years. They just start needing to be recharged super frequently. But I bet people end up smashing watches from time to time or maybe people just watch these videos and get the urge for something new. Hope you're doing well!
I own Fenix E that I bought WELL below the retail price during the black Friday sales. At that price it made sense to get an upgraded operating system over Epix Gen II. I am fairly happy with it as I would find hard to justify spending double the money on Fenix 8
Yeah, I think that's the key. Snag the 'E' at a better price point. $800 isn't realistic in my opinion. I think at somewhere around ~$600 people would at least pause and consider it. But who knows 🤷♂️
I'm glad you're enjoying the watch. It seems more likely that Garmin will keep it up to date with software updates longer than something like the Epix gen 2. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great video Matt, love your editing and sharp polished presentation. Love the openness of sharing where Garmin could have challenges
It's hard. I'm a big fan of Garmin. This E stuff is just such an odd direction. Hope you're doing well Chris!!!
Watching till the end only for the cinema entertainment.
Never change Matt.
Kristián from Slovakia.
You are too kind!!! Thanks Kristián!!!
Garmin is smokin the good stuff when they thought up of the E versions
It would be fun to sit in on that group discussion with Garmin when they thought up which features should be included in the E version here. 🚭
Im just going to say it
What is holding the Fenix E back is they decided to exclude the flashlight. Thats it. If they would have put that on there I would probably consider it over trying to knab an Enduro 3 or the Fenix 7/Epix Pro 51mm on sale.
That would have made a big difference. I'm addicted to having a flashlight on my wrist at this point. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Something I've always wondered about Garmin is why whenever they design a new feature their first response is to release a new SKU rather than adjust all skus for that product. For example the Forerunner had a 7:35 and 7:45 SKU that did not seem in any way Justified at that time. Honestly, other than slightly more memory I couldn't tell you if there ever was a significant difference. It seems like they Justified it as a watch that lives between the 945 and the 645 in price alone. I think they have old business practices with very new technology. It's an odd pair.
I think there were more differences with the 735/745 but your point is still very valid. I honestly think that Garmin will at some point have a massive overhaul of their watch devision. Probably with a new CEO or some other major change like that. We'll see. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Apple also sells the SE versions at around half of the price of the premium models. The Fenix E is priced as a premium model (almost the same as the Enduro and more than the 965).
Good point. And I think if Garmin priced the Fenix E at half price people would be very interested.
Yeah, even at $500 or $600 would be more reasonable.
@@mmh129 - 💯% agree
I just picked up the Fenix e from Amazon uk for £460 which to me was a no brainer. I’ve had it for a month now and have to I love it.
@simonward8223 - That's a great price as opposed to $800. Seems much more logical. How do you like it?
Great video. I currently have the Instinct 2S solar. I wanted to get a better battery life and better gps. I was not swayed by the new Instinct, and the prices for the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 seemed really high. I ended up buying the Amazfit T-Rex 3, and so far I am satisfied. I still use my Instinct for everyday, but the Amazfit is my watch for hiking.
I think that's a good balance between the two watches. I've been really impressed with the Amazfit T-Rex 3's battery life. It's a beast. GPS also seems accurate. But using your Instinct for your daily driver makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great video Matt 👍🏻 I continue to be disappointed with each iteration of Fenix, so I’ll be keeping my sapphire titanium Epix 2 until it’s eventual death! I do have flashlight envy tho …
Yes, the flashlight is a very nice addition to these watches. But the longer you keep these watches the more value you're eking out of them. 👌 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Curtis!
Garmin keeping older versions around, has always been the best thing about Garmin, I wouldn’t want them to ditch that, I would just want them to get rid of the E version and just keep the old ones as a budget option. Unfortunately, they will probably mimic the competition and just get rid of the older version like you mentioned they are already appearing to do.
I'd like to see them price the 'E' versions somewhere similar to these older versions. So if you can get an Epix gen 2 for $400, this E version could at least aim for $500. Maybe then it'd give people a bit of a pause. But $800?!? 😬
@ that would definitely make a lot more sense. Especially if they are bent on releasing “new” budget friendly versions.
After the blue triangle bootloop im looking at different brands. Garmin has lost the plot. I have the fenix 8 amoled, but waiting for coros to release a new watch and jump ship
I'm still a Garmin fan. (which is why I'm maybe a bit hard on them) but I'd love to see COROS update that APEX line of watches. 👀 We'll see. 🤷♂️
Their Strategy actually was to Release these Terrible watches so the Rest of the Watches appear as a Much Better value even if they are overpriced as hell...
Ha! 😂 Interesting strategy. It's like the 3 options marketing strategy where everyone ends up buying the middle option which is what you were really selling the entire time.
And this is why things like the Polar Vantage M3, are really knocking on that door. Easier to swap out or use together with a Apple or Samsung watch too
And your seeing Samsung and Apple watches everywhere
Having said that I absolutely love my Fenix 7 in many ways, and Polar has issues that bother me too much
So, for now sticking with Garmin, but I agree with your analysis, and these sky high prices going up and up
The vivoactive 5 is a good bang for the buck too, as is Instinct 2, or 955, and a Fenix 7.
Yeah, I think that Fenix 7 is a pretty impressive device. The M3 is good but that $400 watch price point is super competitive at this point. I'm hopeful that Polar can stick around and keep making some good options. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I'm definitely sticking with my Instinct 2s for now. I had hopes for getting a new watch when the Instinct 3 came out, hopefully in a similarly small size. If the small version of the Instinct E had at least the same functionality of the Instinct 2, I might have considered it. But I really see no sense in "upgrading" to a watch that has less functionality than what I have now.
Yeah, it's probably best to hold on to that Instinct 2 for a while and see what Garmin does next. Plus you'll max out the value for that watch. I'll be testing the Instinct 3 here soon and will hope to have a video out within the next few weeks. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Nodding my head watching this video.
Unrelated to the E series decisions, but I thought I'd drop this here on recent thoughts with Garmin's direction.
I have gone back and forth over time between Garmin, Apple, Coros, and now back to Garmin of late.
Decided on two models, picking up a Fenix 8 Solar for hiking and everyday wear, as well as a Forerunner 255 for off hours, sleep tracking, and things in between.
While you can't compare these two models apples to apples for obvious reasons, the 255 is a crazy good value in this scenario. And to boot, hasn't been plagued with the firmware issues the new Fenix 8 series has experienced.
I'm still on the fence about keeping the Fenix 8 at this point and waiting out it to become more stable. Particularly on battery life, where I am finding roughly half of the battery life Garmin has published for the Fenix 8 Solar, whereas my previous Fenix 7 Pro was true to spec.
Don't get me wrong, it is still hands down enough battery life for my needs, however philosophically it's hard to keep -- especially not knowing if + when Garmin will deliver on what they have committed to. They really have no choice than to continue to lean into fixing things, however the question becomes how much patience will enthusiasts have.
I wonder if it's how you have your Fenix 8 set up. Seems like Garmin always posts times with raise to wake mode on. I like to have my display set to always on. I'm seeing about 7 days consistently with my Fenix 8. What are you seeing?
@@mlegrand Mine is the Fenix 8 Solar 47mm running the latest production firmware.
I intentionlly didn't tweak the stock settings when I first started noticing the battery drain to see how things would fare.
Roughly getting 12-13 days in smartwatch mode, with a short run or walk here and there. I'm usually out on longer hikes but with schedule of late, haven't had a chance to do something longer distance with heavy GPS usage.
At least in what Garmin's publishes on the product page for the watch, it should be getting close to 21 days under these conditions.
I did find that generally to be true to spec on a past Fenix 7 47mm, whereas not with the Fenix 8 Solar.
All that said, the battery life is still hands down very good compared to my AWU 2 and Coros Pace Pro. Totally different watches though.
@@JasonRaneses - I'm seeing their spec for the 47mm showing: Smartwatch: Up to 16 days (7 days always-on)
The 51 is 29 days. Which is why I was seriously considering that size. But really on my tiny wrist, the 47 is the better size. But your point is valid with only getting 12-13 days and not 16. I wonder what's going on?
@@JasonRaneses - Oh yeah, that Solar should be going much longer I'd think. I'd do a factory reset to start and reach out to Garmin. Sorry Jason.
Hi Matt, the best produced tech videos as always! regarding Garmin, What you say is correct. Perhaps the short- to medium-term explanation is that Garmin and retailers are simply selling existing stock. I doubt Garmin are doing new production runs of Instict 2 and Epix 2. Perhaps Apple has better control of predicting production/sales volumes and, thus, can't sell Watch 5 because they sold out years ago once runs of Watch 7 started. SO: Yes, the strategy looks bonkers-crazy, but I suspect that in a couple of years when the older models are gone, Garmin's strategy will make more sense....perhaps...maybe...it could...perhaps.
I love your optimism!!! But short term. Or over the past 5 months in the case for the Fenix E, this strategy has been very odd. And if Garmin is moving to a yearly release cycle (and I'm not saying they are) we'll have more and more old models dropping on the market. Overall, it might not be a horrible strategy, obviously it's working for Apple, but I think the pricing needs to fall into the "land of the reasonable". Like maybe $500 for the Fenix E? I think at that price people might at least pause before going any picking up the Epix gen 2. 🤷♂️
idc about new garmin products (i'm happy with my forerunner 255)
i'm just here for the b-roll.
This video is a little lacking. Mostly because I don't actually have these watches on hand. I should have a Fenix 8 after 100 days video coming up and eventually I'll have something about the Instinct 3. Keep rocking that 255. It's a great device and you can max out the value by keeping it for as long as possible. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great review ❤
Thanks. I don't know if I'd consider this a review but more of a commentary on the brand. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Just a couple weeks ago i bought a Fenix 7x Pro Solar for $650… why would i spend $150 more for a clearly inferior product in the fenix E.
Yeah, that's the problem I'm seeing here. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
It happens. Maybe Garmin is too big and the hands don't talk to each other as often they do
Also been using my epix2 pro 51 for a few weeks and I a living it now
Great production.
Happy training
Yeah, that Epix 2 Pro seems like the way to go. Good price and all the best features. Hope you're doing well!
I hear complaints about 7/X/PRO series getting less updates as FR 955/965......
That could be frustrating. I haven't heard much but was thinking the Fenix 7 Pro might be the sweet spot when it comes to features / price. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Tadej! 👍
What if they have this strategy in order to sold out all their older models very soon? In six months maybe the E will be the only one to buy
Maybe. I'm surprised that the Fenix E has had to compete with the Epix gen 2 at half the price for the past 5 months. That has to have been rough. But if Garmin is moving to a yearly release cycle, maybe all of that will change. 🤷♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
The Garmin msrps are just insane which results in huge depreciation and this "e problem". For vast majority of people there is no sense buying current, or even the previous gen watch as say, Fenix 7 does pretty much everything the 7 pro and 8 do.
I don't know. I think maybe the Fenix 7 with it's flashlight might be the sweet spot. 🤷♂️. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I see some value on Instinct 3 E. Higher contrast MIP with affordable pricing.
@@raspy00135 Not 100% sure but I think the I3E has to old Instinct 2 display
I actually got an Instinct E the day that this video came out (and an Instinct 3 Solar). And my wife said, wow, I love the look of this watch. 😂 I'll have her use it for a while and see if she really does like it or if it was just the cool color that she liked.
At 5:16 when I saw the two comma over the e, my first thought was these are devil horns, and these models are from the devil :D :D
Yikes! Dark thoughts! 😂
These "E" watches are one of the weirdest decisions Garmin has done over the past few years and they already have quite a long list of weird decisions. Instict amoled without maps? no touchscreen? "E" versions with older generation of OHR and no multiband? At those prices these are terrible options for customers.
Yeah, it's funny, Garmin makes some of the very best watches for what we like to do but the product series decisions some times feel wildly unthought through. Thanks for watching Alexandre!
E edition bad move ! If had a flashlight maaaaybe !
I agree. Flashlight and a bit lower price point so it could compete with last years models that are on sale. Well see. Maybe Garmin will make a slight change to their E strategy in the future. 🤷♂️
I used to be a huge Garmin user that has been using several Forerunner and Fenix up until the Fenix 7. But the huge price hike of the Fenix 8, lack of meaningful features (meaningful to me), big problems with the software and that for some reason my Fenix 7 now thinks that I need 50 to 96 hours of recovery every time I do something, I had to move on. And I did and now am using Coros. The Fenix E is an Epix Gen 2 hardware with the new software which Garmin will probably keep on the 8 for the time being, and I think this is good for Epix users anyway. The firmware updates for the Fenix 7 for the last year have been horrendous. I'm disappointed and sorry to see my Fenix 7 sitting in the drawer after so many races, so many events, so many Km 🙁 .
Yeah, I think that's the key. The updates weren't meaningful to me either. I still have a Fenix 8 after 100 days video coming up. And it's still an awesome watch but a lot of people can get away without updating. Crazy issue with your Fenix 7. I wonder if the altimeter is broken or something and it thinks you're doing crazy elevation gains and need forever to recover? 🤷♂️
How do you like the COROS?
@@mlegrandThe altimeter is fine. I've used this Fenix 7 for about two years but all of a sudden the metrics started to go down, recovery to go up and and I was a bit worried about some underlying health issue. Weirdly enough my resting heart rate and HRV were fine all the time. I lowered the intensity of my trainings, did some races and I got excellent results despite the Fenix 7 giving me increasingly worse race predictions. The race prediction at the time for 10 Km was over 47 minutes, I did a 10 Km race in 43m12s. Also interestingly my estimated VO2Max is in the +/-1 range, no big changes either. But still my recoveries are ridiculously high and race predictions are nowhere near where I am, so it's kind of worthless as a training tool, if I don't know where I am, I cannot set up my running zones and trainings properly either.
About Coros, I like what they are currently doing. It's a more focused device, less metrics, less noise, and yes, less features, as you already know. But the software is more polished and I get much more reliable metrics that help me improve, which is ultimately what I want from a sports watch. I hope they keep all that as a core value of the brand.
Looking forward your 100 days with the Fenix 8 review. I hope Garmin has sorted out most of the initial bugs 🤞 .
@@iggalan - I haven't seen much of the bugs that people have been reporting on Reddit. I did have the blue triangle of death the other day but that was fixed by the time I went out biking. Thanks for watching and replying!
I'd said all the " E " not a bad watch If only Garmin can drop the price to match Amazfit watch price below $400 . Thanks for Vid Matt
Good call Teeramate! I think that's the right path for Garmin to take. Make E versions but aim for $400 - $500 price point so that people at least pause before buying those older versions. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
The standard Epix Gen 2 did not have Multi band, that was exclusive to the sapphire editions. However the E versions are pretty dumb for Garmin to do but then again they seem to be doing a lot of dumb stuff lately. Great video Matt.
Very true. Thank for the correction!
I didnt know the Epix Gen 2 doesn't have Multi-band. I have an OG Instinct and I am rather tempted to upgrade to the Epix Gen 2 or the Forrunner 265.
@@CastleBomb44 Yep, it’s strange because if I remember at the time the instinct 2X came out shortly after and had Multiband and you have the Forerunner 955 which was cheaper and had multiband. Strange for them to exclude it from the then very expensive Epix gen 2
I wonder if the E would get new features (if they create anything new). Because if the E gets them but the Epix/Epix Pro don't, that's going to make a lot of customers mad.
I would expect Garmin to be (almost) required to keep updating it for a few years. 🤷♂
They do update the old watches... with bug fixes
I think they made a few key errors here. The Fenix E should have been equivalent to the Sapphire Editions of Epix (Gen 2) and 1-200 cheaper. The Instinct E should have been the Instinct 2 Solar with an improved MIP screen, and the price is right. Nice Video! Do you think they failed, or, as @the5krunner says, when they phase out the older models, this will seem fine?
Hi @GarminRumors, (BTW, I'm a big fan of your site) I haven't read @the5krunner's post yet but I think your idea of pricing these closer in line with where the market has put the Epix Gen 2 ($350-$400) would be ideal. If the E edition was only slightly more expensive than the Epix, say $400-$500, I think a lot of people would at least pause before skipping over the E in favor of older models. But as it stands, even if all of the older models are gone, $800 just doesn't seem like the right price point. 🤷♂️.

Hi Matt. I believe neither the Epix Gen 2 Stainless Steel or the Fenix E has multi-band GPS. Do they?
We should double check. I thought they both had it. 🤔
Oh you’re right. It was only on the titanium/ sapphire edition. 🤦♂️
Thanks for checking...That makes it even worse, they released an outdated watch.
Not only E failed. I still have my Epix Pro because the F8 doesn’t bring anything to the table that’s worth 1000$+
Where is the innovation Garmin? What happened??
I'd say a mic and speaker are a slight innovation. I also think adding dive capabilities are nice to see here. Granted, those aren't things I care about but it's nice to see Garmin continue to improve this device. Adding LTE would have been a really interesting improvement because then you could actually put this mic and speaker to good use. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

What address?
2018 is not four and a half years ago bro
Whoops. I guess that makes my point even more so. And sadly, there is more than one mistake in this video. But thanks for calling me out Vadim!
E as “Economy”.
Evidently, everyone expected 'Economy,' except experts (at Garmin) emphasize 'Essential'
This year it should be more like "Garmin failed..." Even the praised enduro 3 have a problem, it look like girls china plastic toy watch and u have no options with look. F8 LOOKS good but its glitchy still.. Instinc 3 is the worst case.. From army tool to Gender mix tourist commercial. 🙄// edit Yeah ive tried them all.. F8 51mm in my closet, x2 tactical 4 the win.

Can i Comment my address to you ❤
Old stuff in new expensive box that is garmin F series. Do not buy this anyone.
That's the TLDR, version of this video. 😂 I somehow turned it into 8 minutes.
Isn’t Garmin in trouble once solid state batteries hit smart watches next year? Once an Apple Watch lasts 5 days, wants the point in getting a Garmin, unless you’re a diehard user.
Android. Buttons. The feature set is still better if care more about sports than the "smart" side of things.
@ Galaxy watches and Pixel watches are getting the solid state batteries too next year.
I have no idea if/when Apple Watches will get solid state batteries but I'm guessing Garmin has more than a year to figure out their game plan.
I love my AWU and Garmin Epix pro. Even if Apple has a better battery, Garmin maps and navigation are far superior. I’ve tried to use my AWU with navigation using other apps and it still can’t compete in that area. As a hiker, that is very important to me and I may be in a small niche but if Apple had better maps/nav AND battery, I’d probably fully switch over.
@@MdogbrownI wear an enduro 2 on my left wrist and my AWU2 on my right wrist. Same reason as you… Garmin great for fitness and my adventures where Apple is far superior in the smartwatch department. Plus I’m all in on the Apple ecosystem so it’s hard not to have Apple Watch for the convenience and the built in LTE.
And yet another reason to dump garmin
I don't about dumping Garmin. I still think they make some of the best watches for certain people. No need to dump something that's working well in my opinion.
I rather dumped Apple in favour of Garmin. Nothing wrong with the Garmin, works well, solid and who wants to be constantly walking around with a square phone on their wrist, not me!
No they don't! Mission critical bugs at the worst time
I dont know how other brands cant compete with garmin…they keep making mistake after mistake….
They make some amazing watches. For the stuff I like to do, they really are one of the best options available. 🤷♂️
