    Wow...that was quite the storm. Good thing there was no real damage. We get storms like that here from time to time and while the koi seem to enjoy a nice rain shower they always head to the bottom of the pond during a heavy rain like that. As you noted, winter is definitely on the way. Morning temps lately have been 3C to 4C with day time highs around 13C - 14C. Shouldn't complain though, in a few months 4C will seem like summer when winter really arrives. Take care. Cheers.

    13:05 The overall appearance of KOI's body shape with good fleshing from shoulder to back and tail tube suggests that this summer's feeding went quite well. 9:57 As I have said in various places, such water quality testing practices were not very common over there in my time there, and in Japan such practices of tropical fish in aquarium are rarely seen in the KOI keeping field. We hope that influential people like you will be the first to realise this and reject such devices and become like us in the most basic attitude of observing the KOIs themselves and using them for fine-tuning.

    Here in Yorkshire we have had the same storms and everything took a battering with garden furniture all over the place and things resembled the film Twister. The temperatures are about to drop to zero over the weekend so I bit the bullet and fitted my polycarbonate covers; oh well that's the season over, such as it was and now winter beckons. I am glad things seem to have stabilised for you and I think you are right water companies put chloramine in pipes that have been disturbed and if you already have it they up the dose to sanitise the water until things settle down.
    Great video as always

The thunderstorm was like something from the TV😂😂I've not heard constant thunder and lightning like that before. Something in the water is all I can put it down to mate, they've been flicking all season, so if it had been parasites, I think I'd have had an epidemic by now. Thanks mate and you take care, Terry.

    Good to see you back on the small screen😊👍. That thunderstorm was a cracker😳. I use that KH buffer regularly as my RO system lowers it by a couple of degrees (have tried pure bicarbonate but found it to be less predictable). Can’t believe we are approaching the winter, I’m still hanging on to every dry and warm(ish) day but they are getting fewer and fewer☹️. Stay safe and keep warm😊👍

      Hi Phil, and thanks mate. It's the first time I've used the KH Buffer, but it did seem to work well. It's disappointing to think winter is just around the corner and the covers will soon be back on. The koi seasons don't seem to last 5 minutes these days. Take care and stay safe, Terry.

Just one thing Lau, how much and how often do you treat with the Pond Detox? Lincs Fish Health wouldn't say. Hey Terry, a few comments on your movie. If you up you KH your PH will also go up. There is a relation between KH, PH, CO2. You can't directly change PH, you always change either KH or CO2 (airation), this will influence your PH.
    So next remark is that you measured your PH before your KH and it was about 7.5 You didn't measure your PH after you upped the KH, for sure your PH also went up. A KH of 3 to 5 is OK for a koi pond, this will "lower" your PH. For koi development a PH of 6.8-7.2 is ideal. So measure your KH more often, the test is cheap and quick. To uppen the KH (in my opinion) it is best to use Calciumcarbonate (plain chalk) and not the often used calciumBIcarbonate. the difference between the 2 is as follows;
    Calcium carbonate will uppen your KH until the PH reaches 7.2 the rest will settle down in your pond as chalk. if your PH drops again (below 6.8-7.0) it directly will solve in your water to uppen the PH again. so as long as you se some white (of the chalk) in your pond you know you will never get a PH crash, because there is enough buffer (chalk) available in the water.
    Calcium BI carbonate will rocket your PH to 8.2 - 8.4 and after a short period it will very fast go down again. This is because all the Bi carbonate you put in the water will directly be solved in the water which will cause the PH to rocket up. As fast as it goes up when you put it in it will also go down again. This will cause very large difference in PH in a short time. As you know koi can compensate a lot of mistakes we make, but the thing they hate most is a fluctuating PH.
    Next little thing, Virton will only work for a few hours (kill bacteria) after that it is like you never pout it in.The biggest problem is that all those treatments are non selective. They will react with everything (same goes for Halamid-D/chloramine T). the more stuff you have in your pond to react with for example, plant (roots), (fallen) leaves, algae, bacteria the quicker it is not working anymore. This is the reason why (if you have real problems) you need to add a dose 5 days in a row.
    Hope my comments are clear on what I mean (English is not my first language).
    Happy ponding from NL.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  Рік тому

      Hello mate, and thank you for the very interesting information, you're comments are very clear and I understand them very well. It's always good to know these things.
      I did keep an eye on the PH but as I added the buffer over a 3-day period, (which I didn't show in the video very well), the PH didn't move much.
      I didn't realize the Bicarb was so brutal with the PH, I will be more careful with that in the future.
      Paula from Links Fish Health did tell me the Virkon doesn't last long in the water, so I only gave it 3 weekly doses. Thanks again for your help, and I really appreciate you taking the time to put me right, thank you.
      Take care, Terry. Happy Ponding.

      To be honest mate, I don't know much about ozone generators. I did look into them a few years ago, and a few people lost koi with the homemade ones, and some of the ones that came out of China, which did put me off a bit, and I've not looked into it since. I would think things have changed a lot since then, so unfortunately I can't help with that one mate, sorry. There are a lot of people on UA-cam who will know a lot more than me. this cost was done when electricity was 32p pkh. I kept the pond at 13c this year, which kept the koi feeding all winter and out of Aeromonas Alley. I use the Thermotec Inverter Type which in my opinion are one of the best ashp's on the market.
