How to Tie Red Fox Squirrel Nymph - Rick Wollum - Fly tying tutorials

Rick is back with another of his favorite fly tying patterns. This one is personal. The pattern was developed by Rick's friend and famous angler Dave Whitlock. I tied up a couple of these and woke up the next day with a swollen face and throat. It was bad enough that I had to use an epipen to keep breathing +=( but they work so well!!!

Whitlock also had a dubbing product line thru Wapsi SLF, they have a great mix for this pattern’s abdomen and thorax.

Anyone ever fish this generic nymph on lakes? I’ve got to try that out. A generic hare’s ear is a pretty underrated stillwater pattern, and I imagine this one would perform similarly.

It's got to be a good 40 years since I read about this one, in Fly Fisherman Magazine. Dave wrote an article about it, being well written as usual, along with his photography and drawings made for a good read, and we all when out and got Red Squirrel Pelts. I also remember the bug infestation problem I got from one too. I learned a lesson, untanned pelts need to go into a freezer for a while, I like the fly a lot, I tie it on 2 and 3-long hooks, which makes for a very good stone fly imitation. For us that was in the sport since the 1960s, Dave was one of the go-to guys. I first became aware of him when Joe Brooks mentioned him in his book Trout. I got a copy in 1972. With his passing, it also ends just about an era in our sport. He, Doug Swisher, Carl Richards, and Rene Harrop were all mentioned as the young and comers as I recall. I am not young anymore either at 68.
