Detailed explaination of how this works: as the speaker in the phone plays, electric current is being passed through the speaker's coil. The Induction Speaker does not rely on the distorted phone speaker sound (or its vibrations, which would eliminate the high-end of the frequency spectrum and amplify certain lower frequencies because the phone resonates), but on the mostly very clean electro-magnetic signal generated by the speaker's coil. this electro-magnetic signal is then picked up by the Induction Speaker's coil on the top side and amplified, then played via it's own speaker. Basically the NFC of radio technology. Very short range but totally ingenious. You could also refer to the phone's speaker as the "primary coil" of the core-less transformer, the Induction Speaker's pickup coil would then be called the "secondary coil".
From one electronics expert to another I gotta hand it to you totally genius! I was wondering if this might be "NFC" technology and it is, just not the way you'd think! thanks for sharing you knowledge.
Why did I had to scroll so much for this. This is actually what we do at our music class when we're doing a band practice and want to check some part of the song. We just simply put the phone aligned correctly with out guitar/bass pickups (which *picks up* electromagnetic signal generated by the speaker's coil and gives loud output on the connected amplifier speaker.
+Yash Lalluwadia omfg so this was actually a thing people did! are you sure the pickups aren't actually just amplifying the phone's speaker sound? +Fabian B to clarify: I compared it to NFC because of the short range (weak electromagnetic field). this stuff is completely analogue (well, after the DAC in the phone anyways). also: I am no fucking expert, haha!
***** No. it doesn't take EMF as input. The mechanical vibration of phone's speaker is captured (change in flux of coil in EMF) which is converted into electric signals that is amplified. So putting this speaker on a wireless charger will do nothing (may damage the speaker though)

I've had 4 of these for almost 3 years. The audio jack in the back is notorious for coming loose (sinks inside the device). I've had 40+ customers bring them back with that issue alone. Another issue is a lot of them don't work. Some times right out of the box, but usually after a month of use. They aren't bad (when you get one that works) if you have a little know how, you can simply pull it apart to fix it. I don't know what they sell them for now, but when my store carried them, they sold for 15 dollars Canadian. If you buy one, just expect there is a big chance you'll be solely using it with an auxiliary cord. Only 1 of the 4 I own is still working with the wireless feature. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment. I hope you have a fantastic day
Viking King No, it really doesn't. Buy one and you will see it doesn't provide any amplification. What it looks like on the inside is the company couldn't afford to put both speakers into the device. the "dummy" speaker you mention, inside you will notice it's built to house a second speaker. The plastic is literally molded to have another speaker inside. Yes, you can here sound coming out the dummy speaker but it's muffled, to help amplify sound is not what it was designed for.
Joran Groothengel well speakers work by sending an alternating current in an electro magnet. so the speaker detects the electro magnetic field and uses it for its own speakers that are louder than a phones speakers. if you put it up to an electic socket, you can hear buzzing. I hope I explained it clearly.
What if you put your phone on one of those touch speakers on another touch speaker on another touch speaker on another touch speaker on another touch speaker on another touch speaker? ...does it get infinitely loud?
Not really? it might get to a point where there's a lot of distortion or a maximum volume and they all resonate and break but this is just my half-physics brain bullshitting
Aleksije Vujovic I didn't think that because of that you bought Heineken, but because they had that same promotion about 4years ago here in the Netherlands
You're basically right. There are inductors (coiled wire around a ferrite core) where the speakers rest. It picks up the electromagnetic field from the speakers and amplifies it. I have a similar device to this, I typically use it while working outside so I can leave my phone alone and still be able to pick it up without dealing with wires.
It just looks like a speaker with a built in microphone on the side to pickup the sound from your phones’ speaker. But you don’t see it so it seems more impressive.
Who else thinks that loui schould put the links in the discription of the music he uses?? because everytime i hear those sick beats, i just wanna know what the songs are called!!
My grandma got me one of these a few christmases back as far as sound quality goes its not a good main speaker but for something youre bringing around this is amazing! Love this little gadget
It doesn't have to do anything with vibrations, that's for sure. Iit has an electromagnetic pickup, not a microphone. Your phone's speaker coil modifies the pickup's magnetic field, and that's what it amplifies. At least I think it works like that :D
More often then not if you need anything louder you can rest asure someone has a boombox or something you can connect it to other wise it's usually sufficient if you're the only one listening to music. What it's doing is it's using the principle of magnetic induction, there is a coil in the unit that is "detecting" the change in magnetic field in the speakers. That then creates a small movement of electrons in the coil of the base, that is then amplified within the speaker and outputted as an electrical signal to the speakers in the unit. Real clever use of an old electronics principle.
I have a phone recording mic that works like this I bought 20 YEARS Ago. You just place it near any speaker and it picks up the electromagnetic field. It has Headphone Jack on the end the I'd plug into a micro cassette recorder. Really I am surprised that I have not seen the technology used that much.
The technology was used back in the 1980's to allow people to record their phone calls. It came in the form of a pickup coil with a suction cup. Just place the pickup coil against the phone receiver speaker and plug it into a tape deck microphone jack. And your phone conversation would be recorded.
I bought an RCA alarm clock that has something called sound flow. I found that it wasn't that loud. Worth it for 10$ tho. Edit: Also you can't be on your phone while playing music which is a HUGE con.

This is called NFA (Near Field Audio). Every speaker uses a magnet to move the cone up and down. This magnetic field is used to read the audio from your phone and then amplified into the speaker.

Wireless induction is pretty simple, It works similar to a microphone but without the diaphragm, The Emf generated from the device speaker is picked up from the induction coil in the speaker box then amplified, This is basically working from the electromagnetic field generated from the phone speaker and a receiving coil converts the field into sound again similar to the way electricity can be wireless with the use of induction coils in wireless phone chargers. Its pretty cool, Just would prefer a bigger speaker for better sound :D
I think the speaker amplifies the low end... treble is already super loud on smartphones so clarifying the low end and amplifying it would likely make it feel significantly louder and more clear.
You're saying it uses "vibration" or sound from the device. My guess is that is uses the EMF(electromagnetic field) from the coil that drives the speaker... I would assume that there is simply a coil in the very top of the amp/speaker that is connected to an amplifier circuit(hopefully with some protection circuit inbetween).
I tested one of these with my flip phone and an alarm. It amplified it. It even works with my laptop speakers. What krass76 says is the correct explanation of how this device works. Essentially, you are turning your device's speaker coil into a primary coil of a transformer and the amplifer coil into the secondary coil. It'll probably even work with those tape cassette adapters. Just put the adapter's tape head near the amplifier coil. It should work with anything that has a coil. The cashier were I got this amplifier said that it basically works about the same as a wooden box with a hole in one side. I believe those are called a sounding box. Those work off of the sound vibration of the speaker and of course requires no power to amplify sound. It's also the same principle of how the guitar instrument works to play music when the musician strums the guitar strings.
If there was a microphone in there, the sound would probably be distorted or the sound from the speaker would be picked up again by the microphone and it will make the sound echo-ish
+r_streit twitch Confirmed. I've taken one apart. It was a cheap little promotional gift I got from a vendor but it was not working. In mine, there were two induction coils (they look like small transformers) in the spot(s) where cell phone speakers would most often line up.
Its just constructive waves. That’s how volume is increased in your speakers or car radio. Essentially if you line up the sound waves from your phone with the device it adds the amplitudes of both sound waves increasing the volume. So the higher the amplitude the louder your speakers are.
Sir please unbox recently launched bezeless smartphone Xiaomi Mi Mix.. The phone has latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 CPU Adreno 530 GPU, 6 GB RAM 256 GB internal storage, huge 6.4 inch quad HD display, Android 6.0, 16 MP main and 5 MP front camera, fingerprint scanner, NFC, and big 4400 mAh battery.. Sir please please please please please unbox it. I want to see the Xiaomi Mi Mix on Unbox therapy...
is it me or its so simple. Its a microphone that takes the sound and amplifies and plays through the speakers :D There is no need of any sci fi tech :P
have you heard of "feedback"? it's that annoying high pitched sound when you put the sound in an infinite loop through a mic capturing speaker output. so yes, it is just you and it is not that simple.
speakers use magnets as divers, magnets create magnetic fields, an induction coil in the box picks up that field, converts it to an electrical signal, internal amp boosts it, drives the bigger speaker. pretty awesome science fair experiment made into a product.
As the product name suggests it works through induction, which means that there should be 2 induction coils (because stereo) in there which pick the electromagnetic field of your phone speakers up and amplify it through additional speakers. So no microphone involved. Not to mention that the quality of that would be absolute crap if you ever tried to pick up smartphone music with your headset to share ist via Skype, etc.
***** But in this particular example there would be no need for a air wave or sound to be present. The change of the electromagnetic field would suffice for the coil to receive and amplify the signal. So no sound/vibration present, which means that this is strictly speaking no microphone ^^ (no offense)
Had one of these ( different version ) for like 2 years now .. you put 3 AA batteries in it and then drop it on top where the icon is is where you put the speaker on the phone , then its all good but its more of a desk thing
For all of you thinking, that there is a mic and speaker playing back the sound: No! Its NOT. Every Speaker has a magnet and a coil. The coil creates magnetic fealds in the music's frequency in order to move the magnet. The magnet moves the membrain and you hear the sound. Now this device catches the changing magnetic field from the coil with another coil, and amplifies the signal to some better quality speakers. Very easy and convinient thing.
since speakers use a coil producing a magnetic field, it might just be receiving and sensing the audio through that field. It would be the best sounding method for sure.
I think there is a little microphone that works as the input of the voice and there are big speakers that works as output of the sound. It is easy technology and I work in a very good way. I thought he was going to shout at it to test there is something.
Built in induction technology? That would imply that it's not picking up the physical vibrations so much as it's picking up the electrical oscillations that move the magnet in the original speaker, this would imply that it is of a higher fidelity than if it worked acoustically
I had one of these. Fortunately, I take stuff apart to see how it works. There are electronic coils inside on the end where the phones speakers go. Then there is an amplifier which goes to a couple speakers.
used to do the same thing with my electrical guitar .. once I put the phone near the pickup the sound comes out of tge amplifier .. some how shitty quality though
my best guess is that the symbols that you line your speakers up to have a modified pick up type thing, like a guitar pick up. it then can pick up on the sound put out. I do the same with my guitar all the time through my amp. so instead of a straight up mic, like everyone's suggesting, it's more of a magnet pickup type dealio.
Technically this should work on My Phone right? Bcoz my Speaker is broken(it still works, but the sound is pretty bad when not using a very low volume , but the coil is intact, and that's the point of the technique right?
If your speaker is broken, the membrane with the attached voice coil is not moving 100% properly, which affects the electromagnetic field of the speaker. This field is picked up by an induction coil and then amplified. This means that there could be an effect on the sound quality due to your slightly broken phone speaker.
You can do that on old stereo with cassette, you just need to get phones speaker close to that cassette magnet reader thing and you will have boosted sound.
Its just something in the speaker that's sensitive to the electromagnetic field of the speakers and just converting that signal into an input for the speaker. Just something I learnt in senior physics called electromagnetic induction
I think it is a mic and speaker system. A mic which can capture sound from a very small area. If you can try speaking near the two spots on speaker and show us all what happens, that will be cool! Thanks man!
Same things happens when you put phone over el. guitar pickup. EM field from em picks up the audio signal from phone. Inside is probably some version of the same device like a guitar.

It would still work. It picks up on the internal vibrations of the phone regardless of which way the speakers face.

I am curious how it handles a phone in a case. I feel like the case would hinder this speaker too much.
Pat O that's what I'm thinking
Cases are for plebs
I got a speaker like that from Heineken :P
maxitaxie3000 me too
maxitaxie3000 k
Me too lol
same
Holland Heineken 😄😄😄
I think the speaker amplifies the low end... treble is already super loud on smartphones so clarifying the low end and amplifying it would likely make it feel significantly louder and more clear.
LOL this project isn't new. I got a speaker like that except blue and it cost $10 😂
Warrior 54 does it work?
link?
Warrior 54 kmart sells these 10$ they work but soo shit
where?
got one in wal mart like 8 years ago probably like 20bucks
song at 2:23?
nevermind 2:59
Are you unable to read properly dude? soundcloud.com/eqbeats/dawnapproach
And btw 2:23 and 2:59 are the exact same tracks.
Asianboyyy117 what is the song if you know it
Roman Rangel he linked the soundcloud man and pause at 2:59 lazy beech
Asianboyyy117 He linked it? I swear he never does.
Its NFC!
Latvian GamePlayZ {LV} Its not, not all devices support nfc, it uses the magnetic field the speaker is generating
No...
No, you can't send so much data so quickly over nfc. With NFC it would just enable bluetooth on the phone and connect to the speaker.
no !, it's induction

PotatoNuke
may be a microphone that amps it up
Def Dreadlock nah
at first I thought that, live microphone transmits sound to speakers, but I don't know
Tea Smoker it's an induction coil
Its a microphone that takes the sound and amplifies and plays through the speakers :D
There is no need of any sci fi tech :P
akshay sharma no
that would loop the music creating a very anoying pitch sound.......
have you heard of "feedback"? it's that annoying high pitched sound when you put the sound in an infinite loop through a mic capturing speaker output. so yes, it is just you and it is not that simple.
My guess is simple induction from the magnetic pulses of the phone's speaker.
speakers use magnets as divers, magnets create magnetic fields, an induction coil in the box picks up that field, converts it to an electrical signal, internal amp boosts it, drives the bigger speaker. pretty awesome science fair experiment made into a product.
noice
Simple! It has microphone and amplifies the sound from the phone
What about feedback distortion?
As the product name suggests it works through induction, which means that there should be 2 induction coils (because stereo) in there which pick the electromagnetic field of your phone speakers up and amplify it through additional speakers.
So no microphone involved.
Not to mention that the quality of that would be absolute crap if you ever tried to pick up smartphone music with your headset to share ist via Skype, etc.
***** But in this particular example there would be no need for a air wave or sound to be present. The change of the electromagnetic field would suffice for the coil to receive and amplify the signal. So no sound/vibration present, which means that this is strictly speaking no microphone ^^
(no offense)
omg the rainy evening ep is the best lew!
Had one of these ( different version ) for like 2 years now .. you put 3 AA batteries in it and then drop it on top where the icon is is where you put the speaker on the phone , then its all good but its more of a desk thing
When you are trying to be a scientist..😂 2:36 #suckexplanation
*WE NEED THE ULTIMATE UNBOX THERAPY PLAYLIST*
I always comeback to watch this particular video for that sneeze! Hahahahahahah! Made my day everytime!
That tongue twister was easy af
For all of you thinking, that there is a mic and speaker playing back the sound: No! Its NOT.
Every Speaker has a magnet and a coil. The coil creates magnetic fealds in the music's frequency in order to move the magnet. The magnet moves the membrain and you hear the sound.
Now this device catches the changing magnetic field from the coil with another coil, and amplifies the signal to some better quality speakers.
Very easy and convinient thing.
2:23 what is the name of this song ???
since speakers use a coil producing a magnetic field, it might just be receiving and sensing the audio through that field. It would be the best sounding method for sure.
I think there is a little microphone that works as the input of the voice and there are big speakers that works as output of the sound. It is easy technology and I work in a very good way. I thought he was going to shout at it to test there is something.
Lew, we need your playlists!
Built in induction technology? That would imply that it's not picking up the physical vibrations so much as it's picking up the electrical oscillations that move the magnet in the original speaker, this would imply that it is of a higher fidelity than if it worked acoustically
There will be losses either way
I had one of these. Fortunately, I take stuff apart to see how it works. There are electronic coils inside on the end where the phones speakers go. Then there is an amplifier which goes to a couple speakers.
🎶 "Do you wanna link, do you wanna pair..are you sure about that!?" 🎶 that sounds like a hot song
used to do the same thing with my electrical guitar .. once I put the phone near the pickup the sound comes out of tge amplifier .. some how shitty quality though
4:26 that moment when he holds up the phone to the mic so we can hear better instead of using the speaker that amplifies it already
my best guess is that the symbols that you line your speakers up to have a modified pick up type thing, like a guitar pick up. it then can pick up on the sound put out. I do the same with my guitar all the time through my amp. so instead of a straight up mic, like everyone's suggesting, it's more of a magnet pickup type dealio.
Saw an informercial for a similar speaker earlier today, not sure how much these cost but the ones on TV were two for $20
The link in the video description only leads to an amazon search for induction speaker
Thanks man!
Come on Lew! It's 2016 no one sneezes in their hand anymore! Haha, and that thing is dope.. I actually kinda want one!
Pree cool. There's a bit of distortion in the sound but otherwise a neat idea.
People understood the pro-tip of every e-guitar player LOL
what's the name of the song that starts playing at 02:23?
It would be interesting if you show the Nexus 6P or the 5X because of the front speakers.
Yeah, because i want a speaker for ants on my party...
I wonder if you put another smaller speaker on this one. Would it work?
Hey Lewis. You need to do a video on the Altec Lansing life jacket Bluetooth speaker! It is loud! With NFC. (Hint turn up the speaker too!)
Hey Jack, how would it sound if you get multiple speakers and stacked them onto each other?
Same things happens when you put phone over el. guitar pickup. EM field from em picks up the audio signal from phone. Inside is probably some version of the same device like a guitar.
