I have spoken to Neural DSP regarding this. Confirming that the capture of the Soldano on the Quad Cortex is an older production model and the plug-in version is a representation of the new SLO. The notable difference is that the newer SLO has the depth control and the ability to hard bypass the effects loop (which I assume they would have done when capturing this with how clear and punchy the tone is). For die-hard Soldano fans like myself I sincerely appreciate having access to both versions of the SLO. I don’t think it will ever be a matter of inferior vs superior just slight difference in tones, noting that the original SLO would have had the DeYoung transformers whereas the new model does not. Confirming also that the speakers in the Soldano plug-in are Vintage 30s. I think Neural eventually capturing as many amps in this format as possible would be fantastic as the comparison to the ‘real thing’ is insanely close and for those who don’t have the financial budget or ability to crank a head in their apartment, these products will be a great asset. Owning a real Soldano Avenger and comparing it to the plug-in of the SLO, I can honestly say, it’s so close (identical with a slight EQ adjustment which could just be as small as minor differences in capacitors and circuity across the two amps) I may not even have to capture my Avenger for my Quad Cortex when it arrives, it’s just that damn close. I rely very heavily on the Depth control for my tone, so the stock SLO on the Quad Cortex won’t be able to achieve the exact tone I want. I hope this helps. Just wanted to clarify what I have learnt through the process of getting my tone. Have a great holiday :)
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I'm personally very happy that they put this out. I consider the Soldano to be a very special amp. It separates and articulates notes in a way I can't seem to find in another high gain amp. There are other amps that sound better in some ways but they don't have that specific quality and believe me I have looked. It's just the only one I've personally played that can do certain things as well as it can. There are plenty of popular all time great amps that I have never been able to get my hands on. If you are reading this and know of another amp that does what the Soldano does I am all ears because I would love a cheaper option.

A John Mayer plugin that incorporates either his Two Rock or PRS amp sound with that Bricasti reverb rack unit would be incredible. Even someone closer to Neural's usual fare, like Jerry Cantrell and his signature Friedman, would be something I'd buy day one.
@@MaestroJericho You may have dashed my hopes, but I'd also love a Steve Stevens plugin. It'd be impossible with the people controlling his estate, but an Archetype: Prince would be a dream come true for me personally. The effects chain alone would be very interesting.
The QC models the SLO-100 MKI (so does every other plugin out there now) and this release models the SLO-100 MKII (the only rendition of a MKII out there at this time)
I have to agree. I was quite impressed with the the clean and crunch channel. I found some awesome blues tones - which weren't at all what I was looking for. In terms of why, well perhaps they realize that not everyone will be getting the QC so from that perspective it can have a separate business case. Could also be that they were trying to get Mike on board for a while and when he finally agreed they had to move on it. I don't know if the QC model official though.
I'm happy with Poulin's Soldano amp sim (free) and Amplitube's Soldano sim. They get the job done. Also, another free one is Amplex by NaLex. The Soldano is one of the amp settings in the free multi-amp sim.
Amplex is such a great option and just so easy to set up. When I talk to people about getting their metal sims and whatever I suggest Nalex and some IR packs and a hard cider, they love it. Esp the ability to create one's own profile in text is great. I'm not that much of a geek though lol
@@cmd_f5 For a paid - and low impact - solution, I also like Kuassa's Amplifikation 360 - and the amps you can buy for them. Kuassa's really got a nice selection and I've gotten VERY close to a perfect Boston tone with it in my videos.
dude you took the words right out of my mouth. Very well articulated points. I guess I'm just glad to have something that says Soldano on it and sounds somewhat like it without forking over two mortgage payments lol. But you are spot on. I don't know maybe the sucess is more than Nueral DSP can handle or maybe they are just getting greedy. Or both. Good review man and nice playing!
I'm pretty sure the Quad Cortex options of SLO-100 are just profiles/"neural captures". The Plugin is both emulation and Cabinet IRs. (You get the full controls, that should respond like the real amp) Neural Captures are just captures of a rig at one given moment/setting/mic placement/etc. Emulation is like having the rig itself. At least that's what I'm understanding about this type of amp sim.
Ryan, please check out the brand new Rhino guitar plug in from Aurora DSP. I think that is finally a new approach when it comes to creating your own sound rather then copy existing amps. The user interface is also much better then everything I’ve seen so far
I've just sat down to try it, and I'm already very impressed after 15 minutes. Definitely going to have to make a video on this one, thanks for the suggestion!
Glad to see that i wasn't the only one thoroughly unimpressed with Neural's SLO. Honestly, i can't hear much of a difference between this and the one that (for a limited time) was free with Amplitube 5CS, so why would i pay $120 for it. I ended up putting my money into Archetype gojira because A: It did the sounds i needed and wanted, and B the shimmer-verb and phaser+chorus on non-guitar sources were so inspiring i wrote 3 songs in the trial period.
I think this particular SLO is a modern take on it by Soldano himself, so Neural might add it to the QC as another model All I have is Nolly, but if Neural put out a centralized plugin like that I’d probably buy more Neural stuff As far as the comparison with the Nembrini and Amplitube, the Neural seemed to have more low end fullness. Not to the point of justifying buying it if you have one of the others though
Hi Ryan, quick question. I own the Nameless and Cali plugins and feel I just need to add effects to round out my tones. Which Archetype would you recommend for incorporating effects? Kind of like you mentioned in your Corey Wong review. Which Archetype in your opinion has the best effects options. Thanks for your help.
Nice High on Fire riff there. I won't be buying Quad Cortex, so don't care personally. Still I'm interested in a morbid sort of way what NDSP will say regarding the plug vs hardware versions of this one. I like the consistent layout of NDSP. If they keep the same general theme I won't mind. Gets old when every plugin in a bundle is kind of different. Just gimme the tone shaping options in a simple format. Their layout does that. :) About the SLO being modeled to death I hear you. However it's still good to play a couple versions of an emulation and decide for yourself which one works. It's a bit like the 6505. I'm so sick of yet another one every other week but some of them are undoubtedly nicer sounding than others. Check out Vadim Taranov's Slorunner for a cheap Windows plugin that does amp only and no extra BS to justify the 100+ price of this. That said I've not tried the NDSP SLO yet. I dunno. It's becoming a little of a broken record for me but more options is always good. If Audio Assaulp came out with a SLO like their Sigma plugin, I'd buy it. No question. Quad Cortex desktop would be way dope. I WOULD consider buying that. Great runthrough and rant as always. Cheers
Why wasn't this video in my feed?? I'm subscribed and have watched a ton of your videos, I only saw it because it was like the tenth recommendation on a random vid.
I heard that this is a totally different Soldono emulation than the one inside the quad cortex. I wonder what version is the "better version" Either way this sounds great. I've been using alot of these when I'm sent di tracks when I'm to lazy to run them though my axe fx 3 lately.
The nembrini and neural sound identical to me in the comparison....and I already have the nembrini, which I got on sale, for a 2 digit price....I own the nts plugin and pretty much use that mostly along with the loomis jst.... great video
I have this and the gojira plugin and they are awesome but i have really been into the Audio Assult stuff recently. The sigma and revv amps are fucking sick and only 15 bucks. They are kind of like inbetween ml soundlabs amd neural dsp quality. The hellbeast randal satan one they have is badass also. Just my opinion.
I agree with you concerning the AA stuff, it's pretty good especially considering the price. But if you already have Neural DSP plugins...why buy plugins of inferior quality at all?
@@MatthiasBuesing just getting different sounds. Sonetimes i just want like a wierd combo amp sound or sonething like that. And im addicted to sims now lol
Depends. I'd say for not a lotta money, grab Audio Assault's Bassgrinder and Klank. If you need a more rock or clean bass sim, Kuassa makes one (can't remember the name but it sounded when great when I tried a friend's setup using it)
I prefer to buy the hardware. Second hand amps are basically free. As in you can sell them for about the same price as you bought them. Don't get neural dsp either. The quad cortex should get all the sounds of the plugins without paying extra, feels like they know they are on top and are collecting the profits.
When they announced that you would be able to load the plugin versions on the quad cortex it started to smell a bit weird. That would mean that the unit wouldn't have the amps incuded. I'm not a fan of buting a floor unit and have to shell a hundred dollars for a new amp.
Man we need your opinion on ml sound lab amped cb4 (diezel vh4 amp sim) very much! Please do the review with your unpaid thoughts about this plugin. The high gain or it is absolutely awesome in my opinion but clean/crunch is shitty.
I honestly am quite excited to try this. Im a bit awkward amp wise as Im not a metal metal head. I'm more a 2000 alt rock emo kid that actually learned how to play a bit of prog 😂😂 So super super cleans, big chord inversions and low key metal/ metalcore. riffs. But not "metal". ... most metal amps i have to dial in on like gain 2. But things like plexis and stuff are too vintage and muddy for drop G# on a 7 string. Lol
Hi. I like that you're critical and not just swallowing the hype around Neural's stuff. I'm a bedroom guitarist, have had various tube amps/DI and Kemper for about 5-6 years. Gotta say I'm impressed (I own Gojira, Cali and now Soldano). Here is another demo by Tom Quayle ua-cam.com/video/FRrzLXuMtRo/v-deo.html I think I will put my Kemper on the sell list :)
none of the above. The QC models a vintage SLO-100. The SLO-100 suite models a modern one. I think Neural DSP's SLO's are in very close competition with those from STL Tonehub.
I really don't get your rant against Neural DSP. To me they are the best manufacturer of digital amps ATM. Had some Soldano sims myself but man...Neural DSP blows all of them out of the water. They are the only one who managed to transfer the feel and the response of a tube amp into the digital world. Just my 2 cent of course :-) Quad cortex is another think. First of all not all Neural DSP customers will buy the QC. Also the QC models the original SLO-100 while the plugin is modeled by the newer Mark II.
I don't think he's at all saying it's a bad amp SIM. It's just that a lot of people are getting tired of the same set up of releases from NDSP, the same interface, the same pedals, the same IRs etc. Their SIMs are the best, but it's their practice that people are starting to question. Improved the system by providing 1 plugin that we can select all the parts like other digital manufactures. Right now if I want to make my own FX loop you have to have multiple versions of the same plugin running. It's QoL improvements, but also saying why not provide more pedal choices, why not go back give pedals like comp etc and EQs to older suites like the Fortin stuff that lacks this etc. And beyond that, it seems people are tired of the same hi gain amp releases, it would be nice to see maybe some vintage british amps etc. If that makes sense? If you watch his other stuff he's critical of a bunch of paid SIMs (It's kind of his role here haha).
@@voidabstraction I agree a kind of Quad Cortex in software format would be great...such as Amphub or Amplitube. Considering the UI: they have a great UI, why should they change? And: pedals, IRs are never the same (exapt the Fortin stuff). Up to the Granophyre ML Sound Lab made the IR, afterwords the mighty Nolly. And the IRs are definitely top notch as well.
06:06 they can easily make it the same in a future firmware update. No big deal. Licencing plugin but not all the amps in CQ is just common sence. Licensing all the models would increase the price to enormous amount. Licensing oficial amp manufacturers would be a real serious precedent in hardware processor market. Like opening a pandora box. In the end it's all about costs. Making a competive product in existing market. About VST-harvesters like Amplitube, THU, Native etc. I don't like this concept since from the beginning it s?cked hard. They had 100+ mediocre amps till the guys at Mercuriall started making one amp VST's, but really qualitative. In the end: why should you buy a hungred amps you don't use if you can try trial of a dozen really good ones? One amp vst is way to go. So did UAD, so did Plugin Alliance, Mercuriall, Nembrini Audio. And no, I am no Neural DSP fan either. I use whatever works well in my setup with my abilities.

@@MaestroJericho You may have dashed my hopes, but I'd also love a Steve Stevens plugin. It'd be impossible with the people controlling his estate, but an Archetype: Prince would be a dream come true for me personally. The effects chain alone would be very interesting.
Great review, man, thank you so much! It would be great to hear your opinion on Aurora DSP Rhino ampsim.
The QC models the SLO-100 MKI (so does every other plugin out there now) and this release models the SLO-100 MKII (the only rendition of a MKII out there at this time)
The Neural DSP vst sounded best. Also I think that the speaker IR are V30s that were recorded by Nolly, or at least that's what is stuck in my head.
Yep, Nolly made all IRs since the switch from ML Sound lab (that made IRs for them up the Granophyre).
I have the amt s1 pedal and sounds great
The Amplitube is quite terrible compared to Neural.
Don't forget the nembrini version.
Good point of view. Thanks for sharing this. I'll wait for the Quad Cortext plugin edition :D
The plugin SLO is a newer version of the amp.
dude you took the words right out of my mouth. Very well articulated points. I guess I'm just glad to have something that says Soldano on it and sounds somewhat like it without forking over two mortgage payments lol. But you are spot on. I don't know maybe the sucess is more than Nueral DSP can handle or maybe they are just getting greedy. Or both. Good review man and nice playing!
whoo for me the nembrini sounds dope man
I'm pretty sure the Quad Cortex options of SLO-100 are just profiles/"neural captures". The Plugin is both emulation and Cabinet IRs. (You get the full controls, that should respond like the real amp)
Neural Captures are just captures of a rig at one given moment/setting/mic placement/etc. Emulation is like having the rig itself. At least that's what I'm understanding about this type of amp sim.
Ryan, please check out the brand new Rhino guitar plug in from
Aurora DSP.
I think this particular SLO is a modern take on it by Soldano himself, so Neural might add it to the QC as another model
All I have is Nolly, but if Neural put out a centralized plugin like that I’d probably buy more Neural stuff
As far as the comparison with the Nembrini and Amplitube, the Neural seemed to have more low end fullness.
Your playing on this one is so good!
Bit of Devin/SYL in here? 😍
This one sounds better than the others, like the slo in the amplitube. Neural sounds better, thats why they put it out.
About how old the Solano amps have been modelled. I have a Solano emulation in my good old boss GT3. Dating 1999.
About the SLO being modeled to death I hear you.
Cheers
Thanks Ryan! Once again the voice of reason in this neural fanboy congested amp sim world. Have you tried ML soundlab's amped plugins?
Vadim's old slo model sounds almost identical to this one.
Why wasn't this video in my feed?? I'm subscribed and have watched a ton of your videos, I only saw it because it was like the tenth recommendation on a random vid.
I heard that this is a totally different Soldono emulation than the one inside the quad cortex. I wonder what version is the "better version"
Either way this sounds great.
@@MatthiasBuesing You have a good point, though I'd not say "inferior quality", just different. :)
I enjoyed the 14 day trial. But obviously didn’t purchase for a lot of the reasons you mentioned.
Thank you so much. I subscribed to you - you are honest - love it. What is a great amp plug in for bass guitar please?
Depends. I'd say for not a lotta money, grab Audio Assault's Bassgrinder and Klank. If you need a more rock or clean bass sim, Kuassa makes one (can't remember the name but it sounded when great when I tried a friend's setup using it)
@@cmd_f5 Thank you for the great information.
Nice Snakes for the Divine!
7:14 Almost agaaaaiaaaaiiinnnnn
I prefer to buy the hardware. Second hand amps are basically free. As in you can sell them for about the same price as you bought them. Don't get neural dsp either. The quad cortex should get all the sounds of the plugins without paying extra, feels like they know they are on top and are collecting the profits.
When they announced that you would be able to load the plugin versions on the quad cortex it started to smell a bit weird. That would mean that the unit wouldn't have the amps incuded.
I'm not a fan of buting a floor unit and have to shell a hundred dollars for a new amp.
The high on fire riff was choice 👌
Man we need your opinion on ml sound lab amped cb4 (diezel vh4 amp sim) very much! Please do the review with your unpaid thoughts about this plugin. The high gain or it is absolutely awesome in my opinion but clean/crunch is shitty.
The thing is they just use the same IRs across them all, it hits a point where there is only so much you can do.
And surely the FX pedals are just reskined each time.
All NDSP plugins have different IRs.
@@MatthiasBuesing maybe to an extent, but the early ones were Mikko from ML and I’m pretty sure ever since Plini (not 100% sure) it’s all been Nolly.
@@jacee8094 I know that. Granophyre was the last for Mikko, then Nolly Tool over. But they are ALL different...
@@MatthiasBuesing that’s fair. But I mean if the IR is the deciding factor, you can just download the free trial and you get all the IR files 😂
Too bad the Poulin SoloC didn't get the 64 bit upgrade... Still use it bridged
I honestly am quite excited to try this.
Im a bit awkward amp wise as Im not a metal metal head.
I'm more a 2000 alt rock emo kid that actually learned how to play a bit of prog 😂😂
So super super cleans, big chord inversions and low key metal/ metalcore. riffs. But not "metal".
... most metal amps i have to dial in on like gain 2. But things like plexis and stuff are too vintage and muddy for drop G# on a 7 string. Lol
Snakes for the Di-viiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnneeee!!!
it would be cool if they just made 1 with all the amps and pedals
Hi. I like that you're critical and not just swallowing the hype around Neural's stuff. I'm a bedroom guitarist, have had various tube amps/DI and Kemper for about 5-6 years. Gotta say I'm impressed (I own Gojira, Cali and now Soldano). Here is another demo by
Tom Quayle ua-cam.com/video/FRrzLXuMtRo/v-deo.html
I think I will put my Kemper on the sell list :)
none of the above.
Just my 2 cent of course :-)
Quad cortex is another think.
11:05 I thought Twin Peaks had started
Archetype: Dimebag omg take my money
I'll save you some money. Digitech Death Metal into the front of a Gorilla amp.
@@ayewhaddupdoe lmao that’s actually gonna be hard shit to find these days
@@toemasmeems I've got the trash ass digitech in a box somewhere here lol
I was just making a dumb joke tho as dime was a great player, but I can't stand his guitar tone. Rex's bass tone made up for it though.
@@ayewhaddupdoe Lol yeh man that’s funny you say that because I bet that’s a viral video waiting to happen...”SICK TONE WITH DIGITECH 90s PEDAL AND GORILLA AMP”
Hey!
Another Canadian amplifier builder? Soldano is from Seattle
Funny you called Mike Canadian and he's American....
Eh, they aren't innovating. I really just want more offical pedal options, stop bringing out Amps, we already have a massive selection in terms of plugins.
I'm hungry for FX and flavour pedals. A partnership with Earthquaker Devices for example, it's a win win for both companies. People that buy physical gear will still preference the physical, whereas you're opening your market to software players.
But this comes back to the lack of an interface to mix and match and set your own signal path.
Im just gonna stick with real amps👍
Soldano is king. Well, the real amps anyway. No idea about computer SIM bullshit, but a real SLO will blow your fucking doors off. If you like muddy, craptastic dual recs, well good for you. But for tear your face off, cut through in a mix, high gain goodness you can't beat a Soldano. Unless you have a FRYETTE deliverance. Those are the 2 king ding a lings of high gain amps
lol
"Well... that's just like... your opinion, man."
It better be at that price! Even for the little 30 watt, yikes
Muddy dual recs? :D sounds like someone doesn't know how to dial in an amp
Pittbull > Deliverance. Deliverance is still a great sounding amp, but I kept the Pittbull, and tbh my Dover DA50 kills both of them.
Ouch!
This was lame.
Basically another thing with the name on it. Does anyone need it..? Nah, not really. Will ppl buy it..? Hell yeah, it has the name on it, duh..! xD
i downloaded the free trial ,never worked , got bored let the trial run out.i sent you an email regarding professional artist you asked for, never got a reply ,so yeah anyway hope that ratty 8 string case is still holding together.
