I wish the teacher of the watercolour classes I attended a few years ago had taken the time to instruct me this way. It was a "beginner" class but I was truly the only real beginner so I was handicapped from the start. I thought I was no good at watercolour painting and didn't enjoy my weekly class. She was an artist but didn't teach me half as well as you did in this video. I have found many better teachers here on UA-cam. Thanks so much : - )

Aah. Thank you so much 🙈 the entire time I was like yup, this is what I've done wrong before. Oh I've made this mistake as well and that mistake as well. Especially misjudging the amount of water I should take and putting too much pressure on the brush. And I still do that wrong. Need more practice 🙈 but thanks a lot 😊

As far as good quality watercolors for beginners, I am new to watercolor and I spent at least 2 or 3 months watching every video, comparison, and review that I could find on watercolor paints. I started out buying a set of tube watercolors by Luke from Jerry's artarama online. The reason I chose these is because they had a package deal that included a watercolor journal, a paintbrush, and a big bag to store everything in for $40. I read everything I could find on the paints, and they were a very decent brand, highly pigmented and translucent, and the brush was the exact brand I had wanted to buy after doing lots of research like I did on the paints. I believe it is the same brand you use, Silver Black Velvet, and I love it. It was the main reason I bought the package, because initially I really wanted a pan set of dried watercolor paints. Anyway, the paints are really above average if you ask me, though I am knew to watercolor, I am well educated and researched on the subject. And my research did not fail me on the brush either, it is my favorite, it paints so smoothly. I did end up buying a different set of paints, not because those weren't good. But after taking months to decide on a final brand of paint that would be best for me to buy that I could afford, I really had my heart set on the brand I finally picked, and I did not like the hassle of tube paints even though they were very beautiful paints and they performed well. I did not like having to unscrew the cap and put a dab out, guessing how much I would need and then rescrewing on the cap. I just wanted to dip my brush in water and then dip it in my paint, with all the colors there ready for me to use at any time I decided. So, I finally ordered the set of watercolors I wanted and I could not be happier and they are really reasonably priced. After doing lots of research and testing with my newfound knowledge, I settled on a set of 24 Paul Rubens paints. It comes in a gorgeous pink or blue tin, and in my opinion based on pigment, translucency, creaminess, and how they react, they are right up there with some of the very pricey paints. I think they are the perfect starter set because they are professional paints made with mostly single pigment ores, and the set of 24 only cost $38 on Amazon. They were cheaper when I started out, you could actually buy them on aliexpress or wish for $24-$31 dollars, but they went up in the 2 or 3 months I took to research. I think the price rose dramatically because they come from China and we have heavy tariffs now on Chinese goods. But they are still well worth the money. I would also recommend that package I initially bought from Jerry's Artarama for $40 if it is still available and you don't mind using tube paints.

My first watercolors were the chalky pan type that my friend gave me and some paper she gave me too. The paper was NOT made for water color either. I used them a little bit, but I knew I'd need to change to a bit more quality stuff. That same friend also got a cheap water color kit and she decided she didn't like water colors because she used them incorrectly and the quality wasn't good. Moral of the story is, research your medium before buying it.

I had the same problems for years in college, uni and an art college. Neither of us had money and all we would get were these stupid block watercolours (one up from chalk watercolours). Paper was also an issue. Fast forward from 2013 to last month when i got a half pan travel set in an art subscription box i was blown away by the quality of the watercolour and paper. So i went out to my local art shop and got the only decent paper they had and i haven't looked back.

Lol I do all the wrong things thanks but my pallet was 5 dollars and I have two brushes and my paintings are very beautiful because they have meaning so it doesn't matter that the lines are too thick because everyone's paintings are beautiful but perfect paintings always lack meaning and purpose and mistakes because you have to have mistakes to learn but some of those mistakes might be effects and make paintings have depth and prospective

I never said that you need to buy “expensive” paint. There are absolutely great cheap paints, like the Reeves sets that I use in MANY of my beginner videos and I’ve always made a point in many of my lessons to tell beginners that they don’t need to spend a lot of money at all to get into Watercolour. In this video, I’m not dissing the price of paint, I’m showing you that the QUALITY should be something you’re conscious of. There are super cheap paints that are just terrible and others that aren’t. Learning to see and feel how paint acts is important, regardless of price point. :)

  • @bethanielege8322

Here's what "irks" me. Not everyone can afford the higher quality paint. Yeah, sure, it would be nice to spend a lot of money on paint, but when you want to try something and you don't have the money to do it, you go with the cheaper option. It shouldn't irk you that someone can't afford it. I mean, that right there is a reason for me to unsubscribe. You can't down people just because they can't afford to use high end paint. If it came down to having really nice paint and putting food on the table, my kids would be eating, not painting. Sorry not sorry

It s fine to use paint that isn t a artist quality. If you want to have a bit better paint...Van Gogh student paint is better then most student paint cause they use the same amount of pigment for the student quality as for their artist quality. They solved the money part by using less expensive pigments and have less different colors ( but over 40 different colors so still a lot of choice) they don t have the problem of having massive amounts of filler or binding agents that other student quality wc paints have and theirby they are as good as the artist quality. But I only pay 2 euro or less for a half pan of the paint so it s affordable.
Another option is to upgrade your paper to artist quality and buy big sheets instead of blocs of paper. That way you can cut it to the size you want and you ll be getting artist quality paper that is way easier to use and handles wc like a boss! And it will be the same cost as a student quality wc block of paper. Hope this will help you a bit?
Remember that a artist can use even dollarstore brands. Cause a artist makes art ,and should be able to use any kind and any level of artsupply you can find. Even the famous artists used re cycled artmaterials when in need of money..some used coffee, thee, tomatoketchup, musterd etc...as pigments when out of pigments and also out of money....It s just less work to get it to look as you want it to look and for selling the art...it s necessary to tell a client if yhe art is made with less then artist quality materials..so they know that the art isn t as lightfast or not lightfast at all and doesn t last as many years as does the art that is made with artist quality paints ( artist paints is made to last as long as the big master painters paintings last and is called museum-quality grade paint and ink/wc/oil/acrylicpaints, -pencils/crayons.

Hey Bethany, I don’t understand why you’re offended so much lol she literally said that the “bad” pallette costs $1 (bc she bought it from the dollar store). $15 would probably get you a more decent paint set and I’m sure your kids won’t be starving. I just discovered her channel and guess what, I’ll be substituting your “unsubscribe” instead!

  • @kaninerflagg9998

Did you mean it irritates you when YOU have to use cheap paint, or you're irked when other people do it?
Fine, if you mean your own experience.
If you're irritated by other people doing it, that's a you problem.
I play on a ten thousand dollar flute, because I'm a serious musician. But I'm not going to be irritated with someone else for using a $100 second-hand, closed-hole instrument if that's what's in their means or skill level. WTF do I care?

    • @thewonderforest
      @thewonderforest 4 роки тому

Kaniner Flagg I cannot personally work with low quality paints. People can use whatever they like to paint with or whatever they can afford. However, with paints in particular, the quality is not going to be what they might have hoped for if they aren’t educated on the quality. There is a huge difference between a dollar store watercolour palette and other artist grade paints. Even student grade paints are fine to work with and I often do use them in my tutorials. I’d recommend those over what I demonstrated in the video any day. It would be like using a plastic toy flute over a real one ($100 or not), if that better helps you to understand.
