That wave is an absolut beauty! And I feel your problem with the perfectionism. Showing my paintings to close friends helps me a bit. The nice comments give me courage. :)

Wow, the mist/foam coming off that wave is phenomenal! You did a wonderful job capturing the movement of the water, Sarah. This was fun to watch!

I just got sennelier l'aquarelle watercolour tubes and I find that they are excellent for doing ocean waves, portraits and botanical art with these as after 3 layers of glazing they come to life more then any other brand I have tried. I like the texture added by the colour pencils at the end since it is a wave it looks more textured and nice.

Thank you! I have a small set of Sennelier tubes so must remember to try them next time I paint waves 😊

You did a beautiful job! You know? I’m so afraid of falliere so, I’m excited about painting something and, I don’t know why I sabotage myself and don’t do it! I watch plenty of tutes and books, my parents paid private lessons for me while I was growing up, I got married, had kids, had grandkids and, no too long ago I stared painting again, I truly enjoy those moments but, when I don’t get My values right I get frustrated and won’t paint again for a while. You’re right! I need to be kind to myself.
You did so beautifully by getting the colors, values, etc. Thank you!

Great use of Ocean grey and mixes. Some of the things I have learned on my watercolour journey to loosen up are1. The less brushstrokes the better.2. Don't fiddle put your brush down and walk away. 3. Find a picture you like then give yourself 10 minutes to paint it, put paint on paper as quickly as you can, you can only use a very minimal sketch, you will find you have to loosen up very quickly to finish it in time. 4. Let the watercolour paint do what it does best...flow!!! 5. Have fun! If it's not making you happy and you are stressing walk away. Tomorrow may be a better day. Hope some of these help.

Dear Sarah. This painting was beautiful! Thank you for sharing your art goals with us, I have very similar goals too. The one that I struggle with are expressive (painterly) paintings and plein aire painting. Last year I bought a light weight camping chair and gear to help me get out and yet I cling to my desk. It is tricky to head out when you have small children, I mostly paint at night when they’re asleep. But they won’t be little for long and I enjoy all that I have 😌 I’m tempted to purchase that ocean grey, thank you again for sharing

Thank you for your lovely comment Kashfia! It's definitely easier to paint at your desk, especially when you have young children! I used to paint a lot in the evenings when my children were small but they're much bigger now and they often don't go to sleep until after me! It's also hard to get out when the weather is bad and at this time of year, it rains a lot in the UK! I'm looking forward to trying plein air painting in the spring though and might have to invest in some lightweight camping gear too! I wish you every success with your own art goals this year - take care, Sarah 😊

I invested in the Helinox chair zero as recommended by Jane Blundell, I really must use it as I had hoped to!
Btw, thank you for recommending the BenQ desk lamp! It was gifted to me for my last birthday and I love it 🥰

So Lovely! I was excited to see you using a ruling pen! I have used them for years and I never ruin a brush applying masking fluid. I am glad that you are going to be branching out and creating more art! I am still learning more about soft pastels, a new to me medium! I would like to suggest to you as a former avid plain-air painter, use a watercolor block or two of different sizes when setting out on an excursion. I am also going to recommend a “Portable Painter Palette” they are an all in one solution, now I only used mine for a couple of trips to Yosemite before I kinda stopped making paintings this way and reverted to photos or imagination. Before I found that ingenious palette I would use a metal palette and a collapsible water container filled from my water bottle! I am just so glad you are going to be stretching out and creating wonderful paintings, as I am sure you will! Wishing only the very best for you and yours!

I put a sign on my wall where my art space is set up. It says, “ Have fun, you are not wrecking the world’s next masterpiece.” It helps me get over the idea that my art must be perfect.

Luvly painting, I glad you were pleased with it, I thought it felt very lively. I’ve used mapping pens for years, when I do lines like these in this painting I do water masking fluid down a bit and that makes the lines softer

Great goals! Lovely painting. So glad I finally got to see someone use a ruling pen fir masking. What sketchbook are you using? My edging tape tears mine up. I too overwork, especially on landscapes. Animals are just so much easier for me. So glad I found your channel, please keep sharing your milestones on the goals.

I'm a beginner but have attempted to do a few ocean paintings, using masking fluid, white gouache and sand. Love the colors of beaches, waves, etc... different in every area! I need to try a little watercolor every day... not a full picture, but exercise strokes, petals, leaves, etc. Your beach is beautiful! I like Schmincke Ocean Grey... what Turquoise color did you use & paper? Thank you for sharing your gift, a grateful California Gramma 🙏❤

Oooooo you make this look so doable! I don’t have ocean blue but will try mixing it, what colors do you suggest?

    • @SarahNewburyArt
      @SarahNewburyArt  2 роки тому

Thank you Dorothy! Ocean grey is made up of three pigments PB29 (ultramarine blue), PG50 (cobalt green titanate) and PBk 6 (Black), so try mixing ultramarine blue plus black and either a cobalt green or turquoise. Hope this helps 😊

I just saw your colors listed under arrow! Still would like to know what paper you use. Is it different depending on how much water is used... I'm afraid to use good paper... The Arches paper I have I cut in quarters. Mostly have used just a cellulose 140 lb. Cold press and seems OK to do bits of florals. My paper dried out too quickly to do layered hills effectively. Thank you! Glad I found ☺ you!❤ Best wishes for 2022!!!

Hi Ann! For paper I used my A4 Etchr sketchbook which has 100% cotton cold pressed paper (fabriano I think?). It's my favourite sketchbook for watercolour and holds up well to a lot of water and multiple layers. There is a smaller A5 size available too if you wanted to try it out 😊
