unfortunately most people perceive taking your time to answer a question as thinking of a lie. If someone asks you where you were last night and you answer fast it "seems" you are telling the truth. Watch COPS or LivePD of suspects having quick answers for everything. Well, just something I noticed

I am a sport scientist and I know a guy that did a thesis on how shouting and swearing improves the performance of a strenght based exercise. Because strenght is neuromuscular and the neural part is often overlooked. So if we are taliking about a single exercise like something from weightlifting, anger does improve performance but if we're taliking about a sport like soccer or a mma match, keeping your calm and thinking straight is way more important than kicking the ball (or the adversary) really hard.
Anger increases intensity, and done right it can focus it, but just like most things, intensity can only last so long.... short term bursts are perfect to tip a scale. But don’t start the “fight” that way or you are sure to lose.
I’ve been struggling with anger issues for a lot of my life, thankfully I have never actually hurt someone seriously bad (physically at least). Its almost like a sheet is pulled over my head where it’s not even me anymore. My eyes literally twitch back into my head for what feels like a millisecond before centering and then I just have no control over myself just the pure instinct to inflict pain comes out. Scares the shit out of me. Mostly happens when I truly feel threatened for myself or people around me.
Try to be mindful of how you feel because quite often you don't get to full-blown rage without crossing several thresholds of being upset feeling threatened and getting it almost tense feeling grow within you. Presuming you're not in a life-threatening situation try to be mindful of your feelings and if you feel yourself starting to get overly upset about something you have to take a step back, breathe, think about it write it down and for me I have a 24-hour rule. For example today I talked with the payroll person at my work and I was not terribly Happy when his boss kind of interrupted the conversation and basically belittled me for 10 minutes and convince me that the questions that I were asking were pointless and I could tell he was clearly irritated with me which of course irritated me as well. I've been thinking since it happened what I want to do to deal with it, I can ignore it I can try to speak with him tomorrow about it I can speak with his manager but I know for sure that waiting a full 24 hours before sending a snide email or jumping to conclusions is the best bet and in the moment when I was getting kind of upset at how he treated me I simply said thank you for your time gentlemen and walked away.
In sports psychology there is a spectrum of excitation vs maximum performance (which includes focus). Some people just work better when they are more 'angry' according to the text although they didn't directly refer to it in that way. I generally agree with this based on my experience, but I also agree with Jocko in that it can be used as a boost.

I remember in school getting beaten up by 4 guys, I was destroyed mentally, emotionally. I got mad after a few days, I hunted each guy down and beat his ass, because I was mad as hell. So anger applied properly is Awsome.

Adrenaline speeds up your reaction times, improves physical performance and overall makes you more likely to succeed. Its just a short term boost tho, the human body cannot stay in that state long term. You can train it, but there a limit.
Re: emotion improving performance. Was in a wrestling match back in the day. Before we stepped on the mat I was totally intimidated. (Big ass, scary lookin' Tongan.) Ref blows the whistle to start the match, the other guy literally slapped me upside the head (illegal but the ref let it go). Pissed me off so much I completely forgot about being intimidated. Without that impeding my performance I could focus on the match itself. Pinned him in the second round and learned a valuable lesson that day. (Not that rage is the solution but that success is as much a mental game as a physical one.)

I might even seem like it drags on forever in the middle of the action, yourself. BUT it burns you out and finishes you up REAL fast. The trick is to judge best when to hit that button, when it's okay to lay on the throttle in a moment that really CAN be between success and failure, or life and death. When you're on your ass in the woods, and you've got potentially a mile or more to crawl to get to gear or help and be able to do something prospectively affirmative for your situation... Tap (don't crush) the throttle a bit. Get pissed a little... You can't afford to let the broken leg(s) beat you. You can't let the pain beat you. You can't let the grass or mud or rocks beat you. Face the enemies as they are... own THEM, and it's okay to get a little pissed. When you're facing a choice to make some last stand for glory or tactically retreat for home base (HQ?) and reconnoiter? Maybe reconnoiter. If they're that enthusiastic and you're so sure you can pump the gas and blow 'em out of the water, you can't afford to be wrong... The fact is, nine times out of ten, anger and rage lead to "knee jerk" reactions, because you're so embraced to your emotions, you CAN'T think straight. AND what the hell's the point of having an above-average intelligence, and then training that talent into a set of refined, finely honed skills (all of which require you to think straight, clean, and sober) when that moment comes that you NEED it all, and you can't access it??? Do you substitute anger for aggression? NO. Aggression is always going forward. Taking the offensive because it's the best possible defense... Aggression is the act of engaging every bit of your training, every bit of your knowledge and JUST ENOUGH of your instincts to do the damn job, take the ground... go for the kill because you KNOW you've got it. Solid explanation. The greatest fighters do not fight with anger but with agression. It's a cold agression. Being on the offense, externally seeming like a storm, but internally being emotionless. Brain>Heart. Now when your brain starts to fail you and you lose sight of the goal and instead you focus on your pain and exhaustion, that's when you have to tap into your rage to boost you.
fighting is the weirdest thing. i have never had even usually a split second to have an emotion period. usually the other guy is on his ass before i blink. i snap to offensive line training and just lay people out with a double palm strike to the solar plexus and then leave quickly. i usually am out of harms way and then become get a little mad that i didn't hit the person some few more extra times or something, lol. this question got me thinking because it's sort of a weird question thinking back on every single one of my fights in life. there's this little part of me that gets mad at myself for not hurting people more and for reacting so quickly. that's the only way i can describe it. i think aggression is almost not even it. it is honestly more immediate nerve arc decisive action, violence of action. i think i fight more the way i played tennis than the way i played offensive line though. hit the ball while it is still on the rise rather than waiting. both have helped me in martial arts, along with surfing. surfing you just have what you have to deal with and you deal with it. fights are the same way. you can prepare using all the forms you want, all the sequences you want, know all this stuff and i still forearms shiver some dude, run over him and run off like a high school offensive lineman. there's no comparison between training fights and spur of the moment street fights. for one street fights suck and you have to worry about the law even if the other dude starts the thing. i'm always more afraid of the law than i ever have been of my adversary, other than the one time a guy pulled a rifle out on me. i got in a huge debaucle in the Marines because of how i reacted when a dude ran up behind me and started yelling while his hands were in his jacket pockets. i thought he had a pistol in either hand in his pockets and that started the whole fight off. i ended up getting tossed in jail and kicked out of the Marines for it. idk, not fighting is best.
Imo, emotion will always fail in the face of something deeper. A kind of aggression exists that requires no emotion, it takes only willpower and determination. Anger is like flame on the end of a torch, willpower is a sword that requires some fire to forge, it needs to be quenched in water, it needs a strong temper. That's a strong temper, not a bad temper. It also needs to be honed and sharpened, and you have to learn how to wield it. Which takes work, but once that sword is forged, it makes the fire of rage pale in comparison and it stays at your side, long after the fire goes out.

depends on what fuels your anger and rage. The fuel determines how long a fire burns. What you focus on is your fuel. Make it about someone else. If you are lucky enough to have a person who cares about you make it about someone that deserves it.

In my opinion rage can help if the moment calls for it and if you are trained. But the capability to think logically should never be abandoned , if the movements come naturally and all you need is a target rage can be used to damage your opponent physically and mentally.
They go hand in hand. One is an emotion and the other is a measure of violence. Not saying one cant exist without the other but one definitely influences the other. Intelligence, emotional intelligence plays a big part in how you direct either or.
Violence of action will win 99% of the time. It's picking the moment then explode with the fight already been played or programmed in your head. That's for the ring. On the street is another story...good luck.
I can tell you this is a fact, once you lost your ability to think because anger, rage or aggression. I think of an enraged guy punching a guy in the head over and over. When elbows, knees, and kicks would have brought the fight to a close much quicker, with way more damage, arguably less effort. At the same time people get enraged and angry and punch until they are punched out, then are basically defenseless. So I'd say keeping your head is the single most important thing you can do.

Anger can be seen in the motivational landscape of individuals like Lance Armstrong and David Goggins. in both cases it originated with the relationships they had or didn't have with their fathers. The potential of self-destruction in that scenario is self-evident. Disciplined aggression is the Way to go. That is the path where we discover that the only soul we need to eat... Is the one belonging to the little voice inside our head that says "can't".
It's funny because in sports, you typically perform better when your mind is switched off. Less thought. For some, anger makes them feel bulletproof. For others, it simply strips second thoughts and inhibitions.
50/50 as a running back/corner anger was definitely useful because if I'm shooting a gap or blitzing that anger helps move people lol but if I'm past that secondary or I'm covering/containing that calm flow state is pretty necessary

I'm divorcing a russian. They show so much anger. My mother in law cries on cue. They have no self control when it comes to anger. I'm done with all the emotional and verbal abuse. My ex and his mother are the most negative and angry people I've ever met in my life. It drains you're soul. I thank God I'm American.

I prefer to do neither and instead tend to direct or even refidect emotional energy. What I tell patients is that emotion is fuel. You need it to power your car, but you don’t drive a gas tank.

When ever I'm doing a job and I need to freakin aggressive to make it happen I find this podcast and listen to it and yes, it works.

fighting is the weirdest thing. i have never had even usually a split second to have an emotion period. usually the other guy is on his ass before i blink. i snap to offensive line training and just lay people out with a double palm strike to the solar plexus and then leave quickly. i usually am out of harms way and then become get a little mad that i didn't hit the person some few more extra times or something, lol. this question got me thinking because it's sort of a weird question thinking back on every single one of my fights in life. there's this little part of me that gets mad at myself for not hurting people more and for reacting so quickly. that's the only way i can describe it. i think aggression is almost not even it. it is honestly more immediate nerve arc decisive action, violence of action. i think i fight more the way i played tennis than the way i played offensive line though. hit the ball while it is still on the rise rather than waiting. both have helped me in martial arts, along with surfing. surfing you just have what you have to deal with and you deal with it. fights are the same way. you can prepare using all the forms you want, all the sequences you want, know all this stuff and i still forearms shiver some dude, run over him and run off like a high school offensive lineman. there's no comparison between training fights and spur of the moment street fights. for one street fights suck and you have to worry about the law even if the other dude starts the thing. i'm always more afraid of the law than i ever have been of my adversary, other than the one time a guy pulled a rifle out on me. i got in a huge debaucle in the Marines because of how i reacted when a dude ran up behind me and started yelling while his hands were in his jacket pockets. i thought he had a pistol in either hand in his pockets and that started the whole fight off. i ended up getting tossed in jail and kicked out of the Marines for it. idk, not fighting is best.
Imo, emotion will always fail in the face of something deeper. A kind of aggression exists that requires no emotion, it takes only willpower and determination. Anger is like flame on the end of a torch, willpower is a sword that requires some fire to forge, it needs to be quenched in water, it needs a strong temper. That's a strong temper, not a bad temper.
It also needs to be honed and sharpened, and you have to learn how to wield it. Which takes work, but once that sword is forged, it makes the fire of rage pale in comparison and it stays at your side, long after the fire goes out.

depends on what fuels your anger and rage. The fuel determines how long a fire burns. What you focus on is your fuel. Make it about someone else. If you are lucky enough to have a person who cares about you make it about someone that deserves it.

In my opinion rage can help if the moment calls for it and if you are trained. But the capability to think logically should never be abandoned , if the movements come naturally and all you need is a target rage can be used to damage your opponent physically and mentally.
They go hand in hand. One is an emotion and the other is a measure of violence. Not saying one cant exist without the other but one definitely influences the other. Intelligence, emotional intelligence plays a big part in how you direct either or.

I can tell you this is a fact, once you lost your ability to think because anger, rage or aggression. I think of an enraged guy punching a guy in the head over and over. When elbows, knees, and kicks would have brought the fight to a close much quicker, with way more damage, arguably less effort. At the same time people get enraged and angry and punch until they are punched out, then are basically defenseless. So I'd say keeping your head is the single most important thing you can do.

I've always thought Aggression is forward movement, and Anger is regressive movement.
Anger can be seen in the motivational landscape of individuals like Lance Armstrong and David Goggins.
in both cases it originated with the relationships they had or didn't have with their fathers.
The potential of self-destruction in that scenario is self-evident.
Disciplined aggression is the Way to go. That is the path where we discover that the only soul we need to eat... Is the one belonging to the little voice inside our head that says "can't".
It's funny because in sports, you typically perform better when your mind is switched off. Less thought. For some, anger makes them feel bulletproof. For others, it simply strips second thoughts and inhibitions.
50/50 as a running back/corner anger was definitely useful because if I'm shooting a gap or blitzing that anger helps move people lol but if I'm past that secondary or I'm covering/containing that calm flow state is pretty necessary

Many frame the management of emotion as a dichotomy between restraining and/or detatching from emotion vs embracing and letting them take over.
I prefer to do neither and instead tend to direct or even refidect emotional energy. This often involves artistic catharsis that expresses and releases emotion in a creative process or transferring emotional energy between forms (sadness, anger, humor/levity). (sublimation)
