  • This is based on Hybrid Copper Complex-Derived Conductive patterns Printed On Polyimide Substrates by Lee, Jeong et al, Met. Mat.Int. Vol. 18, No 3 (2012) for the formate reduction of copper oxide and a patent I read ages ago that I have lost the reference for about copper nanoparticles in gelatin and peptides. What I think is new here is putting these two ideas together.

    I was just performing Benedicts Reagent and Fehlings solution earlier today. Turned out a fantastic Canary Yellow. Now that you have taught me how to create a gelatine electrolyte, I can now continue my work. 🎩🧪🔬🧠 Curse the sad sacks that have to nick others findings. Bless you friend.

    You do great work, and I am learning quite a bit! Thank you so much for posting these videos! I am going to study even harder, even though I don't have a lot to work with.
    I know about people scoffing at what one studies/does. I have asperger's, bipolar and ADHD. So it's hard to communicate effectively in a verbal fashion, though my written language is crystal clear. When I try to ask for help on these subjects, people tend to think I'm just making things up because my speech skills aren't what would be expected of someone who would immerse themselves in science.
    You are an absolute inspiration, and have given me confidence to continue forward. You help people like myself visualize applications through your explanations of these processes in chemistry. I owe part of my successes in understanding these processes to you. I thank you again.

    Fair play to ya Robert!! First time iv'e ever heard of this. As chelaters go, I've been exploring the world of sodium aluminate and experimenting with different copper salts and other metal salts. I find copper salts very compelling and most of my endeavours rest on the copper element. So glad to see this video...

    Gelatin is an interesting base as it sticks tenaciously to glass and you can make it waterproof with dichromate in a photographic process so you could print circuits with it.

    I have never seen red copper oxide. All my leftover copper salts I reduce the copper oxide and they're always black. I like to store all my copper salt is oxide because it's so quick and easy to generate any form of the salt from the oxide state. I must be passing the stage of red LOL.
    I've been away for quite a while and I'm so glad because there's a hundred videos to watch and it's very exciting lol.

    Robert, your videos are a treasure. For instance today I was wondering if I could disperse copper nanoparticles in gelatin to form conductive ink... I have a question. How do you open your microwave after microwaving formic acid? It turned my one room apartment into a gas chamber once before. The fumes burned in my lungs and my eyes and I had to evacuate hastily. I was trying to dissolve tin in formic acid, don't remember why. I think it did dissolve. So did the interior of my microwave. I believe I have plenty of copper oxide from ordinary non microwave reaction of CuSO4(aq) with Al. The powder I obtained reacts with formic acid 85%, forming azure blue. Awesome! However my CuSO4*nH2O(s) doesn't seem to be reacting with the acid. I now lack the courage to pop it into a microwave. Another question would be where to conduct my search. I read in Tesla notes on TV signal about concept of carbon printing. He wrote that gelatin treated with dichromates turns rock hard and impermeable to water. I cannot find anything more about the physical characteristics of such gelatin or about the possible hazards related to toxicity of encapsulated dichromates. I think I can obtain them easily by electrolysis of stainless steel. Once the electrolyte runs dry it turns from murky gray to bright orange.

    Wow. That is brilliant stuff. Vegans and vegetarians will have a mental meltdown at the thought of gelatin however. I have no issue with it however. I am trying to find the copper fulminate Robert has also made. Anyone got a clue which video that is? Keep up the good work.

    Brilliant! Would this coat silver as well, or does it only adhere to iron? I also wanted to say that I really respect you sharing this discovery - and I'm so sorry there are jerks appearing claiming it as their own. Perhaps you could patent it yourself. You could market it as a jewelry making product as well as electronics. Crystals in copper are getting pretty trendy on Etsy, even with that rough texture you spoke of in another video.

      I suspect not as it relies on the electronegative difference and is really a displacement reaction - i never really patent stuff - a lot of this is just free knowledge for everybody - or at least that's my view - but i am glad you found it useful

    ok I am loving the videos is there anywhere in Australia I can buy ready made copper nano gell/past? although I will be trying out lots of your ideas ( as man cave projects) my first aim is to rebuild and plate a radiator surround for my car restoration project, the science bit is a bit of a distraction just at the moment? again brilliant videos! makes a change from my background in joinery and polymer welding of Dam liners :)

    Have you tried other acids apart from fumeric such as citric acid or acetic acid? With the copper nanoparticles stabilised in gelatin have you tried to chelate them in EDTA to form a stable water dispersion?

    I'm trying to find red copper oxide, but on ebay is only ebay black copper oxide. Does that make any difference?

    Thank you very much for the information, I would like to know something; I was reading about gelatin as I am also using it as a polymer composite in my project, they saying that when you microwave gelatin, its proline part changes from l-proline to d-proline and they said if it changes it becomes toxic, so i wanted to hear your opinion on that matter

    can you heat up the formic acid to hot and cause it to all go bad, or would it have to boil off to be ruined?

      Good video Rob, I actually make lots of different colloidal metals. Gold, Silver, Copper and some rare metals too. About stealing ideas, I see so much of this going on it is just not funny. Gold turns Ruby red when the particles are around 2-5 nM. I use citric acid and sodium bicarbonate with Gold but it still clumps maybe this would work with Gold too????

      Robert Murray-Smith huh? sorry not sure what this was to, I was just asking if the formic acid could be ruined by getting it too hot. I was having trouble finding the video where you used formic acid and copper sulfate or acetate and then used them from boiling but did not say how long you waited for them to cool off or if you waited at all, to ask the question cause that is the one I was following and it did not work for me for some reason :(
      so I was probing here to see if maybe I could find out what I had done wrong.
      right now I have a jar with the two mixed that were boiling when I mixed them, (copper sulfate/water solution and formic acid) that is still just a green (lighter than before due to being diluted by the added formic acid I am gathering) and has been sitting over night with still no copper precipitate or change in color at all, also when it was done mixed by pouring I continued to mix it a lot more with a bamboo rod, but now that I think of it I think you used a stainless spoon, maybe this is where I went wrong?)

    You used 300 bloom, porcine gelatin. Where do you get it from? Also, does it have to be this type? CouId I use beef or vegetable gelatin, and does it have to be a specific bloom?

      +Marilyn Kurman I just bought it on e-bay - as to the rest I am not sure - i am guessing it doesn't really matter - but you will have to experiment to be sure

    Hi, I couldn't understand what is the alternative to formic acid, is it ascorbic acid, or sorbic acid? you see, there seems to be some sort of regulation regarding the selling of formic acid where I live, not sure why though... I'm still trying to contact a local pesticide maker to get some samples of formic acid but my expectations are pretty low.

      just buy some kilrock kettle descaler mate - that's formic acid - but the alternative is ascorbic acid - which is vvitamin C

      BTW, I was presented with the alternative of obtaining formic acid from oxidation of formaldehyde... in fact it seemed so obvious after I was told that, that I really felt the need to get some high school Organic Chemistry classes again.

      lol - we can't know everything mate and you have to get the formaldehyde first in the UK gettting formaldehyde is worse than buying formic acid - curious i know - actually because I am a lab I can get most things but i try to think of what people who don't have a registered lab can get hold of

      Actually I'm in Brazil, which probably makes this stuff a litle easier to get than it is to British people.
      Apparently they regulate the selling of formic acid due to it's potencial use on making explosives, not sure about how they deal with formaldehyde, sure it's a kinda dangerous chemical, but I've been told that it's easier to get around here.

      i heard this saying once - locks keep out an honest man - if you are determined to get in - locks do no good - it seems to apply here - you can make explosives from loads of things - including bread flour - passing laws to restrict chemicals on the basis of they might make explosives seems very silly to me - or drugs - you can make a very powerful narcotic from drain cleaner and nail varnish remover - ah well

      That's an interesting question. My understanding is that he's using gelatin to get protein to cap the copper. Agar is a polysaccharide, with a tiny fraction of protein--but maybe it's enough?

    Good Sir Robert, i would like to ask for your permission, to download large groups of your videos on to micro sd drives for my personal library?
    ....and maybe also a hundred more, to give to fellow aspiring chemists and metallurgists that i meet?
    The implications of even a small hand full of your videos is more than enough motivation for me to do what i can to spread your discoveries and to give credit where credit is do.
    What better way to do that, then to carry your entire video library in my pocket when im going to a trade or tech convention.
    I know of semi-reliable manufactures lol ...that sell 16gb micro flash drives for $5 USD when bought in bulk. (Thank you CHINA) i would like to give away 100 collections of your work and it will only cost me $500 USD. If only one of them changes the world for the better....money well spent!
    Id like to even hot glue the sd drives to business cards, that would be the best contact card i ever got! lol

    Copper formate breaks down to carbon dioxide, hydrogen and copper. But these particles are not copper nanoparticles. Copper nanoparticles must be necessarily handled in inert atmosphere or with an oxygen scavenger to preserve their purity. At best, as you said they are large particles. Is the title is misleading?
