What a crowd. What tension there must have been. What amazing skill executed under immense pressure.

Absolute class from Nicklaus holing that putt at the last. 2 of the best players to ever play the game going head to head. Classic golf.

IMHO, This was the greatest tournament ever played. It was an incredible shootout between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, 2 of the GREATEST Hall Of Famers ever to play the game in the greatest era of Golf.

Very interesting to be reminded of what a horrible 2nd shot Nicklaus hit on the 17th.

I've never understood why Jack hit a driver on the last. So unlike him. Why didn't he take an iron deliberately short of Tom's tee shot, then knock it in close to try to put the pressure on ? He used this tactic the following year on the 16th at St Andrews to turn the game against Simon Owen.

Because with a driver he could’ve cut the corner, and got within 60/70 yards of the green - and an almost sure fire birdie.
That would then have put huge pressure on Watson.
So it was an understandable tactic, he just got a bit shot.

@@andrewrobinson8305 Fair point, maybe he learnt from this mistake the following year, as I mentioned in my first comment.
And he wasn't that good from 60/70 yards was he, along with his chipping this was a weakness in his game.
Jack always, or I should say nearly always, thought so clearly. Maybe his missed short putt on the previous hole for once made all out aggression take his golfing brain over for that last vital drive.
