I just spent 10 days in Madrid and found everyone very friendly and welcoming. I didn't see a single frown the whole time, which was a very pleasant experience.

Ok, this is going to be an unpopular opinion. I don't get the hype with Barcelona. I've been once. I didn't hate it. I saw the Sagrada Familia which impressed me. But apart from that, I don't see what makes Barcelona any better than any number of other cities across Spain or Europe as a whole.

I didn't even bother going on my first trip just in case I never return because of the tourism 'problem', but more importantly the 'sequia' or drought but do hope to return someday and go to Figueres then on to France. I think it will rain in Catalunya someday and the tourists will also go away. I sure would if I'd been shot with a water pistol. I might NEVER return and hate to sound so 'republican' or 'right' sided but would Never return had I been hit with a water pistol. Very Poor Form and Really Classless, kinda reminded me of an American. And I am one.

Obviously Barcelona isn't better as exhibited by their rude behavior. When it dries up - no employment, profits, etc. we will think of their desire to ban everyone else.

IMHO... I don't think a tourist tax will deter many who travel to Spain - at least from outside the EU. We already spend so much on airfare and accommodations that an extra €35 doesn't really feel like much extra for a week in Spain.
Personally I am happy to pay a little more to visit the cities I love. It may have more of an effect on weekenders who are flying cheap...

As an Irish man, I will be supporting our English neighbours, in the Euro football ⚽️ match. However, I do love Spain, they play exciting football, and I wish them well also. 🇬🇧 🇪🇸 🏆

Tax the tourist by all. meens .
But don't be surprised if, for some reason, the tourists do stop arriving.
You could end up with a lot of hotels without any guests,

and the low employment and low wages, restaurants failing, will be reinforced quickly and get worse.. Not handling this issue very well.

So, they can halve the number of tourists and still pull in the same amount of tax. Of course, the people who live off Barcelona tourism won't fare so well.

I’m straddling the line on tourist taxes especially in Catalonia. $102 million Euros is a lot of money. How is the government spending the money to “combat” this tourism problem? This tax is on top of all the money that tourists are also spending. Seems like there should be some hard evidence of any measure to counteract the “problem”. In the same thought I don’t understand why one would go to another country and force it to be “just like home”. My plan to move permanently to Spain is to assimilate into the Spanish culture and way of life. Traveling to a country only for the weather and cost of living with no intention of assimilation seems disrespectful and a missed opportunity. Learn their language, enjoy their music, food and art, meet new people and develop friendships. I find the Spanish people are quite friendly, especially when you make an effort to respect their country. Keep up the great work!

I have lived here for 6 years, pay my taxes happily. The Spanish people are absolutely fantastic, and the country is beautiful. Used to live on the Costa del Sol, but moved as I felt I was living in mini England. What annoyed me the most, was brits living under the radar not paying taxes and not wanted to assimilate with the Spanish. Moved inland to the Cordoba, best move ever, neighbours so helpful and very friendly.

I live in Los Angeles County. There is a hotel tax between 12.5-15.5% depending on the cities. There isn't a separate Sales Tax (VAT). So 4 Euros is a bargain.

Spent last summer in a small coastal town in Spain. I met two English ladies who'd been living there for 12 and 16 years respectively. Neither could understand a Spanish lady who came over to us to ask a question. I was only learning from Duolingo a few weeks at that stage and even I could get the gist of it. I can't understand why people won't integrate and learn the language.

What is the point on going to any country and just wanting the same as you get at home ?
    I dont get it.
I've been to 37 different countries and worked in a lot of them, i could never imagine not eating what is local, nor trying ro avoid the culture.
    It's just rediculous.
I live here in beautiful Spain and the food is absolutely fantastic.

Absolutely agree, it’s part of the joy of travel and fits with the local environment. Gaspacho would be awful in a cold, damp U.K., but in hot southern Spain, it’s just perfect!

      @@rhianhead6744 Yes it is.
I live in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and a good cold Gispachio is wonderful at this time of year.
It's hot here during our summers as you know and cold drinks and food are definitely the order of the day particularly for lunch.
Light refreshing food rather than stodgy fatty hot food like a full fried breakfast.
I do of course have the odd full brekky, but I only make this at home during the colder winter months.
The Mediterranean diet is so tasty and good for you, I just don't understand why visitors don't want to eat the food here.
Another fantastic thing about living in Andalucia is that tapas are free with certain drinks and this way you get to sample so many gorgeous dishes, it's amazing.

I don’t think a tourist tax would be too troublesome - tourists pay a nominal amount per night when they travel to France. But thats not addressing the key issue. There are insufficient affordable homes being built which would make suitable homes for Spanish residents - where we have an apartment ( Villamartin) there are so many building projects, but all geared towards the tourist market ( more profitable I guess)
I am resident in Wales U.K., which has its own issues in that many young people can’t afford to buy a home in the area they grew up in, because of holiday homes being offered on Air bnb and lying empty all winter.
Interestingly our new Government have already changed the planning regulations and committed to affordable home building targets, and we are only on their second day!

    Hi Stu,
When I lived on Lanzarote there was a debate amongst 'some' British expats if places like Playa Del Carmen with it's endless English and Irish bars had been ruined from the quiet and quirky fishing village of the 80's when I first started visiting the Canaries with my parents. But some may argue it's catering for demand!
I personally preferred the local taberna!

IPA is a british beer style not american brewed for the raj with high levels of hops and alcohol to handle the long trips to india so when you see ipa coming in at 4% abv it's not IPA authentic stuff should be 6% or higher with strong hoppy notes to balance it out and prevent spoilage

Do tourists have to pay the tourist tax if they are staying on a cruise ship?

    • @kellyphx
      @kellyphx 14 днів тому

No, the hotels and (hopefully) the Airbnbs (the honest ones, anyway) collect it as part of your nightly rate. Catalunya can't charge an "entrance fee" in the way Venice can. If staying on a cruise ship, you're technically not staying in Catalunya. Cruise ships pay plenty for docking charges, and you've already paid that in your cabin fee.

    Hi Stu.
I think many people with an ounce of common sense realise all of the problems a 4 day working week would entail if they thought about it.
We have all seen how many Spanish workers have the priority of leaving as early as possible on a Friday (Resulting in a more busy and stressful Monday), and all that will happen will mean the same thing on a Thursday. This is of course not good for a Country with so little productivity in the first place.
Besides - what will these people do with their time? Spend even more money they don't have?

While I lived in Spain at one time, I was considering moving back. And landed on your channel. My memories consist of warm people but seeing residents spraying water on tourists just changed my mind. What a barbaric way to direct their anger. Would think the reputation Spanish people are creating for themselves will ultimately decrease the profits for hotels, restaurants etc. Economies come and go and remember the days when Spain struggled, and employment opportunities seem to linger. Think their anger will backfire in ways they have not considered. And while I watch several UA-cams from Spain, subscribed and like, patreon, now reconsidering why? Another thought is I wonder how Spanish people will be treated in other countries. What goes around comes around perhaps. . The USA consists of numerous visitors from other countries, and can't imagine treating investors, tourists, with sprayed water. (would be arrested) Very disappointed in Spain - thought it was progressing.

Let’s get real. €4 per person per night in Barna is nothing compared to how much it costs to get there from the US Pacific coast. Barcelona is not my favorite (I hope to move to Extramadura and my 2nd favorite is Castile y Leon), but that city thrives on tourists. I will be going back for the third time in Oct bc a best friend wants to go and it’s her retirement trip. I personally don’t like Barcelona that much because of the catering to tourists (everyone speaks English bc it’s easier?) … but you don’t want me or my American $$ there? Fine. Four nights in Barna to cross it off the list and we’re off to see the better representations of the country and culture: Madrid, Castile y Leon, Navarra, Galicia, Asturias, etc…

  • @davidporter9131
