Partially why I rathered the new Agile 9 that's on my channel, incredibly slim neck and neck-thru really nice upper fret access. Love my 9 and can play just about anything I want on there besides crazy bends on the high obv. Definitely just a design thing, but nice playability is possible

    • @MichaelEdwardsGuitar

Yeah, neck-thru is amazing. I can still access the 24th fret on the N9. It just has a crap design if you want to shred up there. They just need to redesign their horn and it would be great. I’m kind of tired of companies just taking the super strat shape and putting it on guitars it doesn’t work for.

I got one. The second voicing is just a slightly thinner tone that'll bring out different qualities when using clean reverb and delay, but almost no difference full gain. Try the second voicing on a clean channel and if there is no difference at all then the QC on your model sucked. The horn issue I've noticed too but you kinda have to wrap your hand around the side of the heel to get good fret access. Considering there's not much competition for the price and its features it seems you gotta settle unfortunately, but they do make a 9 string Ghost now for a little more than this thing.

    • @MichaelEdwardsGuitar
      @MichaelEdwardsGuitar  Рік тому +1

Yeah, not too many options in the 9 string realm rn. You pretty much have to settle on something. Mine is definitely not wired correct, so an unfortunate QC issue there. Although, for cleans I’d just record them using my Kiesel VM8 anyway.

I've been looking for a 9 String, and I am an Ibanez guy at heart and their most recent 9 looks good, however I don't think a 28" scale is gunna suffice. (Why they wouldn't multiscale it, is unbeknownst to me.)
Was there any problems with this at all that require a good amount of work, or was it an odd thing or two that didn't harm playability? I have heard horror stories about Legator in the past, but has that cleared any at all?

I legit did 0 setup out the box and I’m usually pretty picky. Honestly it was setup flawlessly for what I wanted out the box. All I did was tune down the 7th 8th and 9th string and went. I just do a lot of “shred” type playing, so I didn’t like how close the horn was to the body. It is a beast other than that!

This is my opinion aimed at the gear industry, not the player, and is intended to get people thinking about changes to the guitar. To the player: great technique, tone, and video.
Low strings interfere with the kick and bass in the mix. Which means I want the strings to go higher, not lower, for more melodic content and less mud in the mix.
Guitars need to get into the 6th and 7th octave to match an 88 key piano, not down into the 0 and 1 octave, which can be done simply by detuning and using thicker strings on a standard baritone guitar.
I refuse to omit a bass player to make more room for an 8 string guitar player. Rather, I prefer to add 6 or more strings to the bass because I think a bass guitar's timbre is more pleasing on high strings than the tone of an extended range guitar's low strings. I'm thinking more Obscura and less Meshuggah.
And I want my guitar to sound like a pitch wheel on a keyboard. So the whammy bar is required because those Randy Rhodes/Alexi Laiho/Slayer tricks are so cool and expressive.
But, it's impossible to use floating bridges with a high A string with anything currently on the market. The high A string will break when pulled sharp unless it's a very short scale length. The Dean Rusty Cooley 8 string did have a high A but it was fixed bridge with a 23.5" high A and 25.5" low B. Adding a 9th string with a longer low string would make the fretboard slant even worse.
So a multiscale Floyd Rose style bridge needs to be developed.
The biggest disadvantage is due to the limitations of the human hand only so much can be done on extended range guitars.
You can play any interval on a piano with two hands. On a guitar you are limited by how far your left hand can stretch. Yes you can tap with the right hand but this isn't the same as picking a higher string and each guitar string can only be sounded at one spot. A harpsichord is a better design than an extended range guitar for stringed instruments that can play large intervals simultaneously.
Drone notes and tapping/sweeps are not enough to justify an extended range guitar. The lines have to weave in and out of each other in Bachian counterpoint style as *completely independent melodies in different registers.* This can only be done by tracking multiple guitars and basses.
A Digitech Whammy pedal will shift everything up, but it is not as easy to use as having a high A string since the pedal has to be set and swept to a specific interval. It is difficult to do this motion quickly on a single note when playing 16ths at 200 bpm in a high register with notes that are large intervals apart. It's easier to just shift the Whammy up a certain interval to play a few beats or bars and then disengage the pedal after that section. And the pedal has that fake harmonized sound with strange auditory artifacts. This is too slow and does not sound as good as having more, higher strings that can be used with a whammy bar.
You could extend the fretboard like Michael Angelo Batio did in the 80s, but a 6 done this way extends the scale length, increases string tension, makes vibrato more difficult, rules out a whammy bar, and makes the upper frets very small. You can play super high notes, but good luck getting to them. A longer neck with more frets also forces you to play horizontally across the neck instead of more efficiently across strings. So a longer neck with more frets is a better choice for alternate pickers than for sweepers.
*Ultimately, I'm looking for the guitar to become an 88 key keyboard with a pitch wheel capable of going up and down octaves at a time. And adding on more strings isn't making that possible.*
The extended range designs are also boring. They are largely dual humbucker Strats with fixed bridges. You won't see Explorers or BC Rich style shapes with these kind of designs unless they are custom ordered. Most current extended range guitars won't even have pickup rings so you can't put a Seymour Duncan Triple Shot on them for more wiring options. Duncan won't even make a Triple Shot for more than 6 strings. So you can't merge all the wiring mods of the traditional Strat world with extended range guitars yet unless you are handy with a drill press and installing a lot of switches.
Lastly, you're not going to see a lot of nice accessories on these guitars like Graphtech Ghost systems. Too expensive, too hard to modify given current market demand. Imagine the power of using these kinds of guitars with MIDI samples, low latency, and fast tracking.
So at the moment anything beyond 7 strings is not for me. I see them as a one trick pony novelty product aimed at a younger generation of players born after 2000 who grew up on djent and laptop metal and prefer that sound. They also make nice set pieces for Tosin Abasi to play 8 finger tapping and drone notes on at NAMM shows.
I need more than that for what extended range luthiers are charging.

First off thank you for watching, and the positive feedback on my playing and video. It means a lot! In regards to your comment, all valid points and concerns. For me I just love the sound of a 9. I also utilize a contrabass at times for recording so the bass is actually still a whole octave lower. I just prefer that setup. If you want an example of using a 9 string with a digitech whammy to get more of that 88 key piano feel I actually did that in my last video demoing an Aristides 9. Definitely more of what I have come to desire as well. Just extending the range of notes as much as possible. So much to even drop the Drop A0 9 to a A-1 artificially using the digitech hahaha. Basically just a cool percussive effect that low! However, I love the sound personally. Also my bass guitar I split the signal and basically have anything lower than 100hz not distorted since I tune so low. A-1 more recently actually. This goes for bass synths as well as any bass guitar I use. Pretty much all over the frequency spectrum 😂. Thank you for watching!!!

@@MichaelEdwardsGuitar Such a knowledgeable response! Thank you.
Which reminds me, we need more single coil pickups and piezo systems for extended guitars as well. It could make for more interesting textures on clean tones.
I just discovered piccolo bass thanks to Danny Sapko's channel. Stuff like that interests me a lot more than mud city, although piccolo is more interesting as a way to fill out an ensemble than on its own.
In the end, for an orchestral analogy I suppose I'm looking for a way to merge the violin and viola yet retain the independence of their melodic parts--partly so viola players don't get ignored. :)
