I bought a fdm printer in November of 2019 and haven't gotten one nice print because I can't get it leveled. So I bought this printer with the idea it'd be easier to level. After watching this I'm fully convinced it's way easier and I think you just helped solve my leveling problem with my fdm. I haven't seen anywhere that you shouldn't be able to push the paper back, just that you should be able to "feel resistance". Thinking back it makes so much sense, so thank you so very much for this video
Just about to setup my photon for the first time and this is exactly the level of detail I need to feel confident in doing it right. Thanks for the great video, subscribed :)
Great video! This helped me a lot. I got my Photons S after a long delivery time on friday and now i am really able to print. Thanks to your perfect explanation!
That is what I did to my Elegoo Mars! Wished I had seen this video while I was trouble shooting after my first test print. Glad you covered it. Great Information. Love your channel.
Thank you so much for this video sir! My Photon prints had not be sticking to the build-plate for a long while and this video helped me fix the problem.
I brought a photon about 2 weeks ago and had problems with the level. What you have said here has made it possible for me to do the test print and move on to my first figure. Thank you for a simple and straight forward way to setting up the photon and not make it sound as the person who is watching this is an idiot. Anycubic needs to make there manual more user friendly
Thanks for the tutorial. I haven't had to level mine in over a year and I just today thought the plate shifted when I was cleaning. I decided to just level it again and forgot how to do it. Its nice when tutorials are strait to the point and clear on exactly what steps to take. Much obliged.
Damn it !!!! The best guide ever!! I have a brand new photon SE and saw the instructions and every single youtuber calibration videos, everyone is explaining this bad, you are the only one that explained perfectly how to do this shit, not even the instructions, everyone lead to tight the screw and do the z calibration at same time, BIG ERROR, your method is the way to go
I just got my Photon recently and have been occasionally having a problem where the print isn't sticking to the build plate. I thought it might be the leveling, but I was guessing on how to do it right. Thank you for this! I just leveled my build plate using your video and am doing a print... hopefully it will go well this time!
Now that I've watched that's video a few times (every time I have to level my printer). I should probably leave a comment. Super video, thank you for the help, and thanks in advance, for the next time I have to level my printer!
I know this video is coming up on 2 years old, but this helped me so much I had to comment with what I learned from the video. 1. My allen key is not the same size as the set screw or grub screw as you called it, so when I tightened it the first time and it stopped getting tighter, I thought it had some strip deterrent mechanism since the plate didn't move. 2. Funny enough, it turns out my build plate never really moved like yours did in the video, so I had to loosen the set screw 100% and use a little pressure to break it free and now it moves like yours. This made leveling the plate so much better and I'm about to start my first print with the new level. I just had to comment so that hopefully this helps others!
I want to give you a big thank you for a very detailed tutorial on this subject, i was having a lot of problems with my elegoo with it not printing the build plate and it solved it this morning- thanks again , i subbed you and looking forward to some more vids.
Thanks, very well explained , very clear. One steps was indeed missing in the 1st video I saw in another place So I'm ready to make my second try . tnx
So I have a background in CNC milling. This is a very good video but the flattening vs leveling part is a little off. You leveled it with the first operation. The second was just resetting the Z-plane to zero. This is not so important in understand how to do this operation but it is essential in understanding how to trouble shoot printing issues.Your level being out and your Z-zero being out are completely different faults and appear as different defects. This was a good vid. I subed due to watching looking forward to more.
Yeah. This part threw me. And I'm adding this comment 2 years later because this video is still great, but needs these updates. Z offset and leveling a very different concepts and coming from FDM printing this sounded all wrong in the video. You level the plate as he did, then you set it to it's minimum height for starting a print. This is his pushing the paper test. I believe you are supposed to hit Z=0 at that point to reset your Z Offset to that location so the printer always starts there on a new print. Home gets you close and the optical sensor is there as a failsafe to avoid crushing your LCD, while Z=0 tells your printer the start height on the specific machine configuration. I had to go through this when adding a Wham Bam to my Photon S. FDM print a spacer to adjust the Z access optical sensor trigger, then level, then offset for print height.
Thanks for your time !!!! I bought a Photon S last week. I have only managed to print one object, after many attempts, because all the files I send to the printer fall off the platform. Unfortunately, I read today about sanding the plate ... And I have. It has not been worse or better ... But I did it on a flat wood and saw that only the edges of the plate were sanded. Still everything I send to the printer comes off during printing. I do not know what to do, I have calibrated in the two possible ways and nothing. Any ideas? Thank you
Hi...I've purchased the QIDI Shadow and have noticed that it's almost like a hybrid of the Mars and the Photon. I've unfortunately have had some problms with failed prints, they stick to the FEP. The leveling procedure they show in their instructional video is very close. Do you have any other suggestions that may help? Also the build plate surface is different, sort of a brushed metal appearance vs the textured surface. What happens if you accidentally scratch it? I did so removing a print, wasn't hard to do unfortunately. Thanks for any help you can give.
Great Video, I am following your Channels and got al Lot of useful Information. My first 3 Test Prints didn't stick to the Plate, right now I am trying again, after I set Z-Zero according to your Instruction . Cross my Finger it will work . Keep on making this Videos . John
THANK YOU oh soooo much for this. TL;DR - z=0 not same as home, even pressure, defined resistance and only pull out paper not push/pull; best takeaways!!! This is the most detailed guide I've found, and looks nothing like several others I've tried and not gotten anywhere with. It's been super frustrating because every one out of ten it'll actually print, usually right after an attempt, and I'm like OH I GOT IT YAAY... then fail fail fail fail, keep trying different model settings😞rinse and repeat. NO one else has given this kind of detail. A couple videos and several written guides, not one has said in them that you SHOULD NOT be able to push the paper in. In fact, one actually said that you wanted it right there at the point where you can just start push&pull both, my first guide. Yours says it's the other side, the 0.1mm just below that spot, where you CAN'T push only pull. Pretty sure that's MY fail point, because that guide about the push/pull spot being my first guide I read, every other guide I've tried has been with that as the foundation point 😠😠 IF that doesn't fix it then I'll be lost. I was so very much hoping to see this in the video though, that one little detail that I've been missing, and I got it & think/hope that was it. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Thank you for your video! Isn't too close to the bed? Sometimes my print failed and the resin had one ore two layers sticked to the FEP. Anyway I will try your system
Great video. Thanks for explaining things. I just received an Anycubic Photon S and was having issues printing the lattice cube. Even though I followed the instructions on how to level the bed, it wasn't coming out just right. I knew it had to be the FEP, the Leveling, or both. When I received my printer the FEP film had some dimples on it, so I watched your video on how to change the FEP. After following your directions on how to level, and replacing the FEP, I am now printing a perfect lattice cube. Thanks Much! Question though. You and several others mention leveling the bed again when the FEP is replaced? Why does one to need to this when the bed is leveled to the printer frame and LCD?
Look at the left side of your screen and see a 1up arcade street fighter edition. Look to the right of my screen and I see my 1up arcade street fighter edition. I see you're a man of culture
I wish you had one for the Simple Photon Mono, as this has a bit of different screw mechanics. I still try with this, but it is rather close to the regular setup that did not work for me, but gonna have to test it tomorrow.
I just replaced my build plate with one that removes and flexes to help builds come off easier. But I had to readjust where my Z is because the build place was a few mm's thicker. Since this time... I am 3 printing attempts in... I have had nothing but failures. I keep finding the flattened gummy resin stuck onto the film. Is this because of the build plate OR because of my supports failing part way?
Great video! This helped me a lot. I have a question though. You say that after leveling this way you don't have to level again between each print, which sounds good. But seeing that after each print I have to unscrew the build plate to get my print off it before putting it back, are you sure I don't need to re-level it again? On another note, can I just leave the resin in the vat for any amount of time?
Great question! As long as you don't put any undo pressure on the knob and have tightened up things, your build plate should remain level and there is no need to relevel. I have left resin in the vat for weeks without any issue. Some resin does separate and will need to be mixed but again, I have not had trouble with resin being in the vat for weeks at a time.
@@3DPrintFarm Thank you so much for your help :) My first print failed, it didn't stick to the build plate but just fell off into the vat. But after listening to your video about leveling I managed to print my first successful print :D
Hi! thanks for the video, it helped me start me start out with my photon printing addiction! It worked everytime, and you explain it perfectly! I am running into an issue that is not related to how you showed us to level the build plate; but the printer it self. I've done many prints, atleast 10+ within the past month or so, but recently the printer has been causing me much headache and frustration. It keeps incessantlyw BEEPING and BEEPING whenever i start a print, no matter how many times i relevel the build plate and reset the Z=0, it just keeps beeping!! I can't stop it, and nothing beyond the first layer actually gets printed, and I have no idea what to do! people online have had similar issues, but none very helpful to solve my issue. the machine whines because of a leveling error? but i've done this so many time before, why is it now causing this beeping? thank you again for your video, any and all help would be much appreciated!
Hello. I made the Z adjustment, started the first edition. But it stuck to the bottom tray in the first time and in the second time. The shape could not be completed as I wanted. It certainly does not stick to the top tray. What would be the reason? What should I do? I would be glad if you help
Remove your tank and build plate.. Empty the resin and thoroughly clean the vat with some some IPA.. Also, clean the build plate with IPA. Run another test print but increase your exposure time on the bottom layers. If it's currently set to something like 80, increase it by 10 seconds or so.
Hi does anyone know the exact screw specification for the 4 screws holding the bed plate onto its arm socket. These would be the 4 screws you first remove (after the grub screw) when disassembling the print bed.
Can I just point out that what you are doing is adjusting the build plate to make it parallel to the screen which is not making it level. if the screen is at an angle of 45 deg to the horizontal then the build plate will end up being at 45 deg also ;) The video is still useful though!
I'm confused. So, after I calibrate and every... do I need to set z=0 calibration after each print? I want to keep printing objects, and sometimes I have to turn off my machines. But do I need to re-set z=0 everytime? I'm used to FDB because I have auto-home.
Thanks That was very helping for me, and I have a silly question to you and to all Photon users, when you ordered the printer from Anycubic website, did you select the "with resin and/or FEP option? and if not, was it shipped to you without any resin and without FEP at all (even without the 200ml resin and one FEP) ?? I know it is a very silly question, but I appreciate all your answers thanks
The Photon that I received almost a year ago came with a small 500ml bottle of green resin and a spare FEP. I'm not sure what they ship now with the machine. Thanks for asking!
you can lap you're build plate at home, use a glass/mirror sheet they have to be flat to be optically clear otherwise it looks like a fun house mirror, this will get you're plate level. PC crowd has been doing this for years to chase all the speed we could get out of our computer or making them run as cool as we could get them
could you explain this a bit more? What does fast PCs have to do with glass/mirror sheets? You put mirror sheet on your build plate then lap it off and repeat as necessary to get flat reflections?
Very helpful but when I printed out the cube it all stuck to the screen and the result was a 2D pattern. Like a lattice cookie! Nothing stuck to the plate. Any suggestions?
My last few print attempts resulted in a layer solidifying on the plastic film. I just moved the Z=0 a few mm higher. With a higher Z=0 will my print still start on the plate?
My build plate will not go down far enough to feel tension on the paper. It gets to a certain point and will not go down further but the paper is still loose. Is there a way to manually adjust it down further? On here the first thing you did was hit home. I think I did that but not sure I may have just hit down without hitting home first. I'll try it again when I get home. But if that's not it is there a way to manually adjust it?
That's a good method as well. I just don't like moving my build plate around while inside the vat so as not to scratch the FEP (Plastic film). There are several great methods for leveling the build plate with the Photon. The "Flint Reid" Method is popular. The I describe here has worked the best for me! Good luck!
Awesome video. I subscribed , I like your videos. I just got my anycubic photon in. I will level it just like you did. I also have a anycubic photon zero , can't get prints to stick to plate. Curious, do you think leveling the plate on the zero the someway as the photon would work?
When I try to click z=0 i get this message: "z=zero is decided by the trigger position." or "Home first then move z to bottom". When I try to print, the resin sticks to the FEP film. Any thoughts on how to solve it?
I can't get anything printed on my Photon whatever I do. Things remain stuck on the FEP. I have done everything as said here in the video... So tired. The only thing I have not tried is to change the resin, but purchasing resin for a broken printer, i'm not sure... It's all new I received it a month ago... Don't know what to do...
I tried doing my first print after getting it level so that the paper could not move, but then there was a loud, almost TK-K-K-K sound when it was printing the first level so i immidiately aborted. I thought it was probably damaging the FEP or something. So I tried resetting z=0 on the fly, which was stupid, I know. No loud sound but also no print on the build plate. Should I be expecting the sound or not? What am I doing wrong? I can't find any video of what printing should look or sound like.
I'm missing info on how much distance between the fep film and the build plate should be in all these leveling videos..that's the only info I'd need. I assume your fep film is 0.1mm thick and you use normal 80g/m² paper which is 0.12mm thick. Leveling like that without fep film leaves you with like ~ 0.2-0.5 mm distance??
Is there any concern with scratching the LCD screen when sliding paper (which can be abrasive depending on the paper quality) with so much friction from the build plate?
I just recieved my Photon, and I can't seem to loosen, or tighten the leveling plate screw. It's almost as if the wrench they included is too small. Not sure what's going on?

9:02 why should I level again after changin FEP film? It is not in place during the level process.
That screw to give the build plate is the only reason my prints were failing... now to figure out why the system freezes about half way through the build process now
Hands down the best leveling guide. No one stresses even pressure like you do and I believe that's 99% of people's problem

What is the best way to clean the resin tub, especially the clear part, when you're done printing?
Hi does anyone know the exact screw specification for the 4 screws holding the bed plate onto its arm socket. These would be the 4 screws you first remove (after the grub screw) when disassembling the print bed.
Excellent, you helped me so much. Thank you!
Can I just point out that what you are doing is adjusting the build plate to make it parallel to the screen which is not making it level. if the screen is at an angle of 45 deg to the horizontal then the build plate will end up being at 45 deg also ;) The video is still useful though!
This is great. Seems obvious but I'll ask anyway; I have one of those stickers which frames the LED. Do I need to take it off to level?
My test print partially printed onto the FEP film. I'm guessing the print bed wasn't low enough and not totally level?
I'm confused. So, after I calibrate and every... do I need to set z=0 calibration after each print? I want to keep printing objects, and sometimes I have to turn off my machines. But do I need to re-set z=0 everytime? I'm used to FDB because I have auto-home.
Thanks That was very helping for me, and I have a silly question to you and to all Photon users,
when you ordered the printer from Anycubic website, did you select the "with resin and/or FEP option? and if not, was it shipped to you without any resin and without FEP at all (even without the 200ml resin and one FEP) ??
I know it is a very silly question, but I appreciate all your answers thanks
The Photon that I received almost a year ago came with a small 500ml bottle of green resin and a spare FEP. I'm not sure what they ship now with the machine. Thanks for asking!
I got FEP in the VAT, no spare FEP and no resin.
you can lap you're build plate at home, use a glass/mirror sheet they have to be flat to be optically clear otherwise it looks like a fun house mirror, this will get you're plate level.
Thanks a lot for this video. Great tutorial.
This is a great leveling video. Thank you!
Thanks! :)
But if that's not it is there a way to manually adjust it?
what about the other mehode with the "bath" thingy still in and you check if it moves?
That's a good method as well. I just don't like moving my build plate around while inside the vat so as not to scratch the FEP (Plastic film). There are several great methods for leveling the build plate with the Photon. The "Flint Reid" Method is popular. The I describe here has worked the best for me! Good luck!
Awesome video. I subscribed , I like your videos. I just got my anycubic photon in. I will level it just like you did. I also have a anycubic photon zero , can't get prints to stick to plate. Curious, do you think leveling the plate on the zero the someway as the photon would work?
Definitely works.
Perfect video. I was going crazy lol
Thanks for your videos, they have helped me more than you can imagine.
When I try to click z=0 i get this message: "z=zero is decided by the trigger position." or "Home first then move z to bottom". When I try to print, the resin sticks to the FEP film. Any thoughts on how to solve it?
Yea! This the best video helped out a lot
Ok video, but in the notes above you list the LCD screen gasket. How does using this gasket affect this process?
I can't get anything printed on my Photon whatever I do. Things remain stuck on the FEP. I have done everything as said here in the video... So tired. The only thing I have not tried is to change the resin, but purchasing resin for a broken printer, i'm not sure... It's all new I received it a month ago... Don't know what to do...
If I am getting soup skinning but an otherwise good print, what might I be doing wrongly?
Thank you so much, great video
I followed all your instructions for leveling and fep installation; no print this time it didnt even leave much behind...
If you don't set the Z with the FEP in place, why would you need to re-level when you replace it?
Thanks for rhe vid
I just recieved my Photon, and I can't seem to loosen, or tighten the leveling plate screw. It's almost as if the wrench they included is too small. Not sure what's going on?
9:02 why should I level again after changin FEP film? It is not in place during the level process.
That screw to give the build plate is the only reason my prints were failing... now to figure out why the system freezes about half way through the build process now
