    At the spa, I spend 1-2 hours with each guest which usually involves a long conversation about Hawai’i and how “lucky” I am to live here. As much as I can agree how lucky I am, I sometimes burst their bubble when telling them that I do not surf or dance hula lol. Or the most shocking news, that I’m not Hawaiian 😂 although many of us here may not check any of those boxes, most of us have that aloha spirit in us ❤️ living verses vacationing in Hawai’i is completely different. I always say, the struggles and cost to live in paradise really humble people because we know the true value of working hard to make it work.
    But I have a serious question to ask…. Are you really not related to the Rock!? 🤔😂🤣😆😄

    • @SeanKaleponi
      @SeanKaleponi  2 роки тому +1

      Hahaha.. I would love to see the guest reaction when you tell then you don't surf or dance hula! Lol. And it's good to burst their bubble by telling them Hawaii is beautiful but it's also tough financially to live here. And I agree, we work hard and people find it amazing when I tell then it's almost impossible to find pure Hawaiians now days. And yeah, I'm not related to the Rock. Lol. My wife's neice asked me when I went to visit them in Denmark. I thought it was funny because she was serious. Lol

    Thanks for being truthful about the “Aloha Spirit”. I was born and raised in Waimanalo and am part Hawaiian ancestry but now live in Colorado. Many people ask me where to go in HI, mainly O’ahu and I tell them stay away from Waimanalo beaches and the West side. They’re all shocked when I say not everyone there is nice . Great channel you have here and continued success.

    Aloha kākou apau! I am a haole Kelemania (German foreigner). I live in Florida and was in Hawaiʻi 20 years ago for 3 weeks. But in 2019 I started studying the language - and now I am getting better, little by little. I think that Hawaiian and English should be mandatory in all schools in Hawaiʻi.

    Another good video. Id like to mention that many of us don’t speak fluent Hawaiian because ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi was banned after the overthrow. Fortunately, later many of us got to learn at home and in elementary, etc. Thankfully there is ʻAha Pūnana Leo, online classes, etc. And yeah.. we wish we all looked like hula dancers 🌺

    Point #2 Hawaii is Paradise. When people get all gaga when they find out I'm from Hawaii I tell them, "Hawaii is a bunch of active volcanoes and you're only seeing the part above water. There's a lot of stuff (plate tectonics) going on below the surface." Point #3 Aloha spirit. My relatives are Hawaiian and they are not friendly or cheerful when not drinking. In old Hawaii, people were suspicious of strangers outside of the ahupua'a. Also remember that Hawaii has a unique kinship system in which your peers (buddahs and seestahs) are considered your siblings, people your parents' age are your aunts and uncles, etc. The Kodak Hula Show vibe is strictly a marketing ploy, kinda like Facebook... Point #5 The most shameful but not unique legacy of Puritan-Protestant (das why afta 10 p.m. no can buy beer) colonization--yea, let's call it what it is. You'd think that people would actually use their iPhones to fact check things, but info overload and "fake news" is another story. Most tourists have no idea how Hawaii became part of the U.S. and nothing about the overthrow of the monarchy. Sad...

      Def the most note worthy message Ive recieved.! I know they have made videos recently on how Hawaii was overthrown and yet, I don't see those videos pushed hard enough🤙💯

    I just came back from Hawaii 3 days ago. It was my first time visiting and visited Oahu and Maui. I did noticed the traffic (Oahu), homeless situation, and the aloha spirit is not in everywhere. It’s funny how I tried to say “Aloha” instead of “Hello” when I go to shops and little restaurants when I was there and most people replied to me in “Hello” or don’t reply “Aloha” back and be looking at me weird. I say to myself, this person is probably not a local. Same in Maui as well. It’s hard to tell who’s a local because most of the people there are contractors or just there for work.

    • @SeanKaleponi
      @SeanKaleponi  2 роки тому +3

      Aloha Sophie!!! Awww well maybe those people are caught off guard by such a friendly person. Tourist tell me "Aloha" and the locals give me the "Shaka" sign and I give it right back and vice versa. I think things are just a little different post 2020, but yeah, just trying to do my part and give the Aloha spirit.

    People from the mainland think Hawaiian means Kanaka but definitely not true. I was born on the mainland but my ancestors migrated to the Hawaiian islands and Taiwan back in the 1600's. I have no issues with getting my kama'aina when I visit but out of principle I always pay it back. That's what is instilled in me and I try to spread aloha where I can.

    • @SeanKaleponi

    #1 - Nope! Surfing is relatively rare. You gotta live near the beach, get a board somewhere, etc yadda yadda. Your typical kid is not surfing unless everything lines up just right. I was poor as shit and I surfed, but that was only 'cos of sheer luck.
    #2 - If your idea of paradise is working all the time and living in a tiny place yeah....
    #3 - YMMV. If you're are white, Micronesian, black ... it goes on and on. Hawaii is still part of the USA and race is *everything* in the USA.
    #4 - being overweight does not carry the stigma it does on the mainland USA. It's even considered a thing to be proud of. So no huhu!
    #5 - Hawaiian as a language is coming back! It's the official 2nd language besides English in Hawaii and it's being spoken more than ever. It's good to see, but yeah, your average local is going to speak "proper English" if they have to, and "pidgin" which is actually a creole, and be adept at code-switching. There are tons of resources out there now for learning Hawaiian and you can learn it more easily now than in the last I dunno, 100 years? So you can teach words like boto, okole, opala, pilau ... the list goes on...

    • @SeanKaleponi
      @SeanKaleponi  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for adding to this video!! That's cool that you surf and oh, I know about being poor, so I just played a lot basketball, but would be surfed if I lived near a beach. And I agree with the overweight concept. Not Jabba The Hut overweight, but I know woman that appreciate a big guy here. And yes about the language. I work at a place with a lot of Hawaiian speakers. It's more and more now days. So much to cover!:)
