- This is my reaction to NewJeans (뉴진스) ‘Supernatural’ Official MV (Part.1). I have so many questions - but undoubtedly intrigued.

My reading of this music video on the surface (which can definitely change since there's a part 2)...is that Hyein is a bunny that came from the moon (Princess Kaguya reference..a Japanese Folklore)..and that's why there is a UFO hovering above the group when they were dancing, and the other 4 Newjeans isn't able to see her, except the guy...I would guess those 5 (Minji, Hanni, Haerin, Danielle + the guy) are "Extraterrestrial/Weather Hunters"...Minji and Hanni are having a disagreement on what to do with the guy (I guess they think he was acting weird...and its because he is seeing Hyein, the Bunny)...
Danielle and Haerin are having delusions? (maybe they are trying to get taken by the Bunny as well...or Danielle is a reference to Fuujin, which is the God of Lightning in Japanese Mythology, also tasked to bring back Izanagi (The First Male - The guy in the music video) back to the underworld, which is the domain of Izanami (Izanagi's partner....Haerin is riding a Unicorn or a Kirin (in Japanese Mythology, or Kiringul in Korean Mythology...which is able to tell lies from truth)... (the Bunny also looks eerily similar to Donnie Darko's rabbit...which represents death and time/dimension travel)
My best guess (for now) is that Hyein is trying to "take" the guy with her into the other dimension, while Minji and Hanni are having a dispute, and Danielle and Haerin are gonna be controlled to assist Hyein into taking the guy.
Another interpretation I have is that the storm are challenges (dark cloud) hovering over Newjeans right now, while UFO are people who are trying to bring them down/gossips over them/hate on them/conspire against them...The Bunny is a representation of Min Hee Jin which is being painted as a bad person (that's why the rabbit looks scary) but is actually watching over them...Newjeans appear to "dance in the face of the storm/dark clouds/UFO", but behind closed door they are having a hard time (Minji and Hanni are having disagreements, Danielle, the supposed "sunshine" of the group with a dark cloud following her, and Haerin wants to escape, hence her imagination of riding a unicorn...which is the protector of innocence) that's all I have for that part lol...I'm not sure what the guy represents in this instance.
3rd interpretation for me is this is reference to Greek Mythology tale of Selene and Endymion...which is the moon goddess falling in love with a mortal so she visits him every night (when Endymion is asleep)....no actual connections really but it just reminded me of that especially the lyrics:
"You and I
Golden moon
Diamond stars
In a moment we unite"
But I'm leaning more on a reference to Princess Kaguya and Izanami/Izanagi.
Its also worth noting that the bunny costume they chose is creepy and reminds me of 'frank the rabbit' from the film 'donnie darko'.. in that film only donnie could see frank much like how in this only the boy can see hyein... also that film was about time travel and in this video the dancing scenes continuously flip between the 80s and present day.
Also at the start in the cityscape scene the tower they dance in looks like a normal tower... at the end it has changed to have giant bunny ears on it.. could Hyeins presence there have changed it and also given the girls powers? edit: my bad i reread your post again more thoroughly and saw you already mentioned the donnie darko reference :o soz

It's really cool to see someone really take the time out to analyse everything and to seek out a definitive understanding. A rare trait that I have seen with people choosing to do "reaction" videos.

80's or 90' 에는 드래곤볼 뿐 아니라 시티헌터, FSS, 슬램덩크, 세일러문, 베르세르크, 아키라, 건담, 마크로스, 공각기동대 등(그 외 작화나 스토리 면에서 뛰어난 작품들이 셀 수 없이 많음) 거의 일본코믹스의 전성기라 봐도 될 정도의 명작들이 쏟아져 나왔던 시기입니다.
