  • A video from my Alaska seminar demonstrating the 180 technique we use to get dogs to become handler aware. This is helpful for dogs who forge ahead, react out on the leash, and just aren’t focused on their handler at all. This attendee in the video had lost all hope of walking her dog due to its behavior- it would literally drag her down and her entire family stopped helping with the dog because of the risk it had become. Walking on a leash might seem like a small feat, but to some families this is HUGE. This family did not get a dog to be prisoners to their home, unfortunately the dog’s reactive behavior started to make it that way. This is just one small step in the right direction for this owner, but it was enough to give her hope and to start rebuilding her confidence in her dog. And that, is always the goal.
    This is just one of the many protocols I show at my problem solving seminars. Whatever you are struggling with, whatever dog you arrive with, we will work together and make some big changes over the weekend.

    Stress is apart of life...we hate it in the moment, but the feeling of relief afterwards, and accomplishment once the stress subsides, is such a great feeling-and usually growth comes from it. Not saying dogs are humans by any means, but I always imagine that the clarity and confidence that comes from experiencing and overcoming stress builds new and better neuropathways in the brain. Someone once told me pressure makes diamonds, it seemed to always stick with me and seem relative to behavioural modification! The idea that dogs should never experience being stressed seems so silly to me...of course extended amounts of stress, unnecessary, abusive situations are uncalled for. We are talking about modifying deep unwanted, self-reinforcing behaviours so of course it'll be stressful short-term. No one ever talks about the extended amount of stress and cortisol that THE OWNERS experience. THAT can't be healthy either...nor is it fair. There's a healthy amount of stress I think is necessary as a part of learning and evolving for both animals and humans. Thanks for advocating for both 😊

    This method is what I’ve used on my all my dogs but my GSP/Border Collie gets annoyed, 😂, like how dare i! I’ve tried letting her get to the end of the lease, she snaps back to a heel…but I’ve been doing more of the 180 turns randomly, she’s young but she’s old enough to understand.
    Thanks for the free education!

    That's what I'm thinking. "One second of pop vs 2 years of the dog and owner struggling, with dog feeling confusion and stress."

    Im working with a 5 month old Dogo that is deaf, can i let her sniff the ground as w walk, to help her know her envt , or do i stop get from sniffing the ground as we walk?

    • @SolidK9Training
      @SolidK9Training  Рік тому +1

      We don’t. With proper leadership there is no reason the dog needs to be concerned only about you. When the dog is on a break or off leash playing. Sniff as much as you want. Same with 3 legged dogs, blind dogs and anything else. Same rules. FYI if the owner got the dog from a breeder and was not told the dog was dead they should get a partial refund

    What kinds of dogs would you not use this method with?
    I've been starting to use your e-collar heeling video lately, but also wonder the pros/cons with each method to figure out which may be best for my dog.
    Either way, I'm just happy I've been able to start actually walking my dog and enjoying it more!

      Possible a couple kinds of dogs such as very small, fine boned and delicate dogs-however most of the time you can adjust your level of handling per the dog you're working with-maybe for small breeds even a plastic prong is a bit safer for some. Others may be a super fearful, anxious, over sensitive dog. They can sometimes shut down or lose trust in the handler and you can really get the same result from little pops and spacial/body pressure. Possibly another kind of dog that might get even more aroused or amped by the correction and either have a tendency to redirect, or just want to fight back because they may not do well with the physical correction, they may do better with a psychological correction (like a pet corrector) or less physical tool such as an ecollar, since ecollars actuallt produce less cortisol in the brain than a prong or even a flat collar for some. If unsure it's always best to muzzle to dog obviously. Or do a full temperament assessment just gaging their sensitivity level prior to using a firm 180 turn. Clearly this lady has been trying many things for 3 years and the dog is physically durable and responsive it seems.😊

    Does this work with a leash reactive dog? My dog is very fearful and loses it on walks when we see people and other dogs.

      I have a five month old coonhound that his leash reactive. I got him at four months. I’ve been working every day with him. He had gotten bit by another dog the first week I had him. It was his own fault for trying to play too rough with it so called friendly dog. After that I added a prong collar and kept him away from all dogs and people. I walk 2 miles with him every day. When I see him looking at another dog or person I do a 180. And I practice 180s all the time even when there’s no one around.. amazed me that after doing 3 or 4 180s he would calm right down and walk along side me. I never gave him a pop on the leash because he’s a puppy I just let him walk to the end of the leash. That seemed to be enough to turn him. This dog knows all his basic commands. Including place with moderate duration, recall off leash, in my backyard which is not fenced and I’m hiking trails when there’s no one else around, and fetch with the ball or a tug and he drops it right in my hand every time. I’m just amazed that in four or five weeks I turned a crazy animal into a nice calm dog for the most part. Three times a day 10 minute sessions plus a walk. I can’t wait to see what he’s like a year from now.

      You don’t really need the pop: just hold the end of the leash against your midsection (tummy) and turn. The dog will figure out how to be aware of where you are in relation to him. Also, if he goes to the end of the leash, particularly with a prong on, he will feel that he is causing the correction and not you (handler), which is a good thing!

    What kinds of dogs do you NOT want to do the leash pop on? Is there a time where it could work against the dog progressing etc. And what types of collars is ok to use with the technique?

    Surely we have evolved our methodology than training via punishment !

    • @SolidK9Training
      @SolidK9Training  4 роки тому +15

      Feel free to rehab a dog let alone thousands and post up your videos on UA-cam for all to see. Punishment to stop unwanted behavior has and will always work. Life Is filled with punishment Simple concept If you shoes yju get a ticket. Texting and dm driving you get a ticket All forms of punishment to prevent you from doing it again. We are talking about animals. Watch the rv original video some context and the truth. 95% of our training is reward based It won’t stop a unwanted behavior. It’s not possible. Sounds likens good idea but not possible. .

      Your method probably is “dog too aggressive. Most humane way is to Put it down” 🙄 it’s not ok for humans to pop a leash once or twice on the dog but it’s ok for the dog to lunge and bite a human then be quarantined 10 days worse, be euthanized?
