I was with a native in the Fijian mountains for a while on one of our film shoots and he showed me how he sharpened his machete. I had since forgotten how to do the angle and came across your video. Thanks. The native had a machete, thin fishing spear, his machete and a file. That's it for three days of hard jungle travel. Every time we stopped for a rest he sharpened that machete, as if his life depended on it. Guess it did. Cheers, The Crew

I have a machete that an older gentleman have me back in the 80's. I think he used it combat in WWll. The blade is just 10 inches long. I think he had it about 30 years, and now I've had it at least 34 years. It has come in handy so much of my life. I do still use it doing yard work. Back in the 80's I used to chip coconuts with it and got very proficient with it. Thanks for the video as I am needing to sharpen it. It was a marine or army issued one. However it is in pretty good shape, despite some chips.

Wow, thank you dear man with shaved arms. 😂 Today, 26 years after my Daddy died, his WW2 1944 True Temper machete is back in my hands! My sister's had given it to my son. I told him I wanted to buy a machete because I thought Daddy's was long gone, but it wasn't. No stone to sharpen it, I gave it to my son. BUT, I found that same file you used in my garage....I cut paper! I'm so happy, you are appreciated SO much, sat here filing it, and now I can use it to protect myself in my horrible city. I used it when I was a little girl to wack weeds down. Thank you! I didn't need to go buy anything. I won't be shaving my legs with it though, LoL! Much Love to you. 🙋‍♀️💜✝️🇺🇸

Over time, you'll dull your file running it the wrong way, or sideways at the end of your stroke. It's best to work in sections rather than trying to run one file stroke the entire length of the blade. It's more about caring for your file so it continues to work.

I enjoyed the video. A file is the traditional tool for sharpening a machete. It’s common to see a tico walking around with a sheathed machete and file. When I first arrived about 20 years ago I too used a file because of convenience. The difference is that I would laid the blade on a flat surface and terminated with an Arkansas stone. As for your strop, my original looks very much like yours. But I made it well after abandoning the file for sharpening. After using the file for years I came across a Smith sharpener that must be the forerunner of AccuSharp that I preferred for a while. Later I choose to use sandpaper w/oil. Now it’s a Work Sharp belt sander. My Latin machetes are made by Bellota in Colombia. I am not in the market for another but I do believe that I will seek at a Tramontina the next time, they have a good reputation. And yes, I made them shaving sharp from the beginning. When the edge rolled I used another piece of steel to correct this, either my tile floor or the tool from one of my kukris. I probably used that tool more on machetes than a kukri.
I would be more interested in knowing about the wrap on the handle. My Bolletas have a wonderful rubber grips that I use as is, except for one that had to tame the upper seam, easily done with a moto tool and sandpaper. The others I modified with friction tape or ranger bands, which are no more than a bicycle inner tube cut into bands. However these are being replaced with rescue tape as the sun deteriorates the rubber requiring replacement too frequently and the friction tape frequently leaves a deposit in my hand even after using talc powder.

That is a very bad idea and goes against all logic pertaining to home defense. The whole goal of home defense or personal defense is to make sure the "bad guy " never gets close enough that a machete or knife would even be considered. There are plenty of people that could and would stand you on your head if you were that close and took a swing at them. If nothing else get a used 175 dollar Ruger 10/22. I have lots of guns but I keep a Ruger 380 in my hip pocket in a shoot through bill-fold type holster enclosure that looks just like a wallet in my back pocket. In a real situation, it is not supposed to end up being a physical contest. You are to win as swiftly as possible by killing the bad guy without him getting any closer than the other side of the room.

Hi- very informative! Thank you! I purchased machetes for clearing out the tall grass. Rains a lot down here in Texas. I do however have a few questions:
1.)When a machete is purchased, is it not sharp at all because they expect you to make it your way? (I was unaware about this and omg I was about to quit, I wasn’t cutting anything off!)
2.)What are the best machetes to get for clearing out yards? Either an online website or Home Depot/Lowe’s that are sold in those stores?
3)When purchasing a machete, is it better to buy one that’s lightweight or it doesn’t matter? (I’m a lady who does not have upper strength but wants a really good grip and cut.)
    4) Do all types of machetes come dull and need to be sharpened. Such as the hook kind that is smaller?
    5) I purchased Fiskars brand and Home Depot. Is there a better brand? I’m a HD shopper. Fiskars machete and Billhook clearing hatchet.
    6) On the cutting tools I purchased, the machete has holes at the tip of the blade, what is it for?
7)What’s the best way to sharpen a billhook and how to really get a good use?
Thank you for your video and time. Hoping to get a feedback!

      claudia Covarrubias
      1) some are some aren’t. Use an angle grinder or take it to a service who sharpens lawn mower blades if you don’t want to do it.
      2) if by yards you mean grass then a longer one is better, 18’>. I like to use an 18’ tramontina machete for everything. You can get them at Lowe’s. They are best paired with a gancho or a stick if you are cutting the grass. Basically just use the gancho to push the grass to the ground then cut the base of the grass with the machete. A Colima machete would be good too as they are long and you sharpen both sides of the machete.
      3) you definitely want it to be light if you are using it to cut grasses and light brush. A heavier one is for cutting canes and bamboo.
      4) a lot of them do. Tramontinas usually do not come completely dull, however the tips are usually left dull for safety reasons.
      5) yes there are way better machetes. I recommend these ones:
Tramontina 18" Machete with Hardwood Handle and Nylon Sheath www.amazon.com/dp/B00LUZU6YO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qNpSDb4HB1DP9
Tramontina 24" Machete with Textured Black Plastic Handle www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6I3AYC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5NpSDbVYSHCFF
IMACASA 27 INCH COLIMA MACHETE www.amazon.com/dp/B00R0RGQNG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rOpSDb3CC84P1
      6) You can sharpen a billhook with a cylindrical file. But they don’t need to be too sharp. Personally I do not use them very much as I prefer a longer machete. But you use them to dig out roots and to cut grasses precisely. Do this by gripping the grass above where you want to cut then cut.
      Hope this was helpful

Nice basics. The file sharpening can be done by lying the machete down instead of holding it. Personal preference only. Files get them incredibly sharp, but they do get dull fairly quick compared to knives, whose blade steel has better edge retention. I have started using a whetstone of about 500 grit or less to polish the bevel a bit after using the file. I have never stropped a machete. I use a steel instead to hone after sharpening. Good video.

If you stick the file in a vise you can sharpen that thing like a big chef knife and get that thing like a razor. Depending on the machete it's it's nice and thick you have to put a bevel on it with a bench grinder to get it super sharp

A dull blade is dangerous because it is more likely to bounce or defect off a hard surface. So I say the sharper the better.

Don't strop it, just leave it with the file if you're doing it right. Machetties aren't supposed to be "razor sharp", or you'll be re sharpening it all the time. Every swing that doesn't cut is going to round that overly sharp weak edge. Also, the imperfections are called feathers and can act as micro serrations. In the field, I can touch mine up with a smooth rock just to stand those feathers back up, but haven't ever needed to.

Exactly. A slicing edge, like one you'd find on a kitchen knife, NEEDS to be sharp, because the amount of pressure you're using is low.
For a machete, where you're swinging it with force, doesn't need to be sharp to still be "sharp."
I find an angle of 21-25 degrees to be the best for a machete. Anything sharper than that, and it dulls incredibly fast. But it really depends on the environment.
For chopping, I prefer 30°. For vine cutting and work around a campsite, I prefer 20°. But that mid point of 22-25° makes a pretty solid "general use" edge

Hey Gabe. Just wanted to let you know that for the first time I have my 22"Latin Machine absolutely razor sharp. But I have heard the term or phrase "to just put a working edge on it, not a razors edge." What's the difference, if it's a razor edge it is gonna make it easier. I'm sure I'd have to touch it up a bit more. What says you?!👍

MrPocketfullOfSteel machetes are more about just whipping them around. They don’t need to be that sharp. That being said if you had to cut food with them then you’d want to make them super sharp.

This is a great method of sharpening for machetes and axes. Do you usually pack a file when camping/backpacking? Or is there a different method you use for field sharpening?

    • @gabehumphries5483
      @gabehumphries5483  7 років тому +5

Wayside Adventures I would usually just use a DC4 and a piece of leather belt with stropping compound if I was backpacking. You could carry an 8" file easily for those backpacking trips. The 10-inch files stays on the homestead or in the toolbox or in the truck. Mahalo for stopping by
