He's great in this. In fact, he pretty steals the show. Deakin is a great character. I don't know, but this is my theory on him : that he is former RUC and that is how he got involved with the security services.
Me too mate - I remember watching this in the 90s as a kid... i had a crush on the actress - I just googled her and she's now 63 - I know of course she is but quite shocking to see as I hadn't seen her in anything since...
One of the best BBC drama series from the early 1990's. The writing in this series is diamond, and Wilsher's brilliant concept worked really well for a TV drama/Police procedural series. Excellent acting, tastefully directed. Television with brains. Today it's all gloss and not much else with TV. In the Line of Duty wasn't a patch on this drama series, and Between the Lines suffered from low ratings toward the end of its run, and yet it was brilliant to the end, and compelling.
@@joflynn999 Disagree. The MI:5 angle was interesting, and in many ways, the story arc with Deakin being a lure to the demise of the characters was a perfect ending, seeing the BBC decided to end the series with very low ratings.
Thanks for posting this ! I can vividly remember being hooked on this series when it first aired. Thirty years later, it's a joy to re-experience it over again.
yes.. one has a motherly lesbian with balls who manages the lives of her superiors when they need it, and the tragic romantic tony.. and that is before you get to all of the other amazing characters and greek tragedy plot.. i don't know what the other one has apart from melodrama and a predictable happy ending..
Thank you so much for posting this. 'Between the Lines' is my favourite dramatic TV series. Here in Canada, it was called 'Inside The Line' because there was another programme called 'Between the Lines'. I remember reading somewhere a comment by a former member of the Met who said that he found the series to be the most accurate portrayal of police life he had ever seen. I am at a loss to understand why the series was never released in the NTSC (North American) DVD format, and so ordered a copy from the U.K. and bought a multi-system player.
Yes. I first saw this show on showcase in Canada. I remember the Canadian name I do not think it ever aired in the USA. I lived close enough to the border to get Canadian TV. Because I missed some of the episodes, i bought discs in Europe. 25 years later I uploaded them.
I too thank you Jeff G for uploading. The BBC iPlayer episodes currently are disappaearing 2 episodes per week..! Episodes 1-2 already gone, hence I just found Jeff G's gems here, ta much again Jeff G!
After having just binge watched the whole series, I was amazed at how many well known actors guest starred in this series :- Ciaran Hinds, Pete Postlewaite, Jimmy Nesbitt, David Morissey, Daniel Craig, Stephen Macintosh, Natasha Little, Elizabeth Berrington, Ray Winston, Jim Carter, etc. Just great seeing them in this.
Thats 35 episodes if you watched them all. I done a similar thing over a long Easter weekend. Started talking jibberish in police jargon shortly after and needed a little rest in the hospital after chain smoking and on a bottle of scotch a day. I wont be doing that again. 1 episode at a time is fine said my psychiatrist.
I really liked Clark's team - the Mulberry Street one. I wish they had had a full series of that CID lot with normal crime investigation and this episode be the first episode of the second series and have two series about the CIB and leave it at that.
Having ploughed my way through all three series I can say on the whole it was well worth all the time I invested in it (maybe not so much series 3, but more on that later). Boy, was the Met a scary place to work in the early 90's. Despite recent press, I hope it's masively improved. The dreadful misogynistic attitude of all the officers including the likes of Tony and Harry, the fact many of them were very corrupt, even senior officers. What was good was the way they didn't shy away from the fact that many of the senior corrupt officers were masons and hid behind this and their rank when confronted. Great to see so many well known actors having parts in the series, often very small parts, but they were all still recognisable. What wasn't so good was series 3. It kinda lost it's way a bit with unbelievable and convuloted plots somehow always having a connection to MI5 and Deakin (who Tony always seemed to work for, despite him never quite telling Tony all he needed to know). Really couldn't take to his GF in this series either. Finally, we'll never know if Tony and Harry survived and if Mo was able to sucessfully resume her Met Police career at a senior rank, despite having lost everything else i.e. her relationship and possibly Tony and Harry.
Just found out about this series. I agree with the thoughts about Line of Duty which started OK then went ridiculous with the 2 same undercover officers going all over their force and never being recognised!
@@davidscott3612 The casting of people like Stephen Graham , Daniel Mays and a the like are the attraction for me it helps raise it above the usual. One of the most underrated dramas of the 90’s what a series
Absolute gem of a series even after all this time , Tony Doyle's finest performance.
