Government: It's fine. Younger people are just... going to the West to... get... more study and work experience so they could use that knowledge back home. Yeaah... They'll be back.

Government: Okay, okay, okay. It's not as great as we expected but it's also not terrible. Better quality of life in Lithuania will surely slow down emmigration. Besides, after Brexit more Lithuanians are coming back from the UK. Good times are coming.

Government: Well... I mean... For Lithuania the population of 2 million people is... to be expected - that was roughly our nation's size for most of our history. So, the situation is fairly good to be honest.

Man, that's sad but understandable.
Me and my family emmigrated to the UK since 2007/8 and it was due to economic reasons. I don't know much about life in Lithuania since I was little when we moved, but even now I can tell that my parents are somewhat emotionally wounded still, whether that was due to the cold war under the ussr, or family in general not providing enough emotional support. It has a knock on effect on me and my siblings too, but I'm sure by being aware and understanding that we can move past the pain.
We'll visit Lithuania again when we get the chance *when the social climate is at least acceptable.
(I'm not in any position to go anywhere anyway. I get the message. My only motivation was to see my motherland, but other than that, no motivation and no reason to go.)

It's wild to think that the only substantially growing city is Vilnius
Vilnius has best economy and a lot of investments from other countries. So a lot of people from going abroad starts to go to Vilnius. I think its positive trend that people instead of going abroad goes to Vilnius, but still a lot needs to be changed to make other cities attractive for people to stay. In recent years emigration has slowed down significantly or even stopped.
Lithuania basically killed its province. All the investments is to Vilnius only. They even can't fix a road from Utena to Vilnius. Pathetic.
@@ZorroComputers maybe its a low cargo carry road. And others are more urgent. Currently as am writing they are improving the road from Mariampolė town to Warshava.

It has been warned about for years, but… it’s like if you wanna travel to Lithuania - Blame yourself! And now there is a huge oil spill from this sh*t ferries ⛴️ in the Baltic Sea. It it will take decades for the sea and fauna to recover 😢
Cities are black holes for demographics the more urban the population the less kids it will have, humans are not evolved to live with so many people nearby
many young people left Lithuania and go for new life and work in England, Ireland, Norway, Germany other EU countries. Left mostly elder pensioners and midle age.

Unfortunately, I think the current inflation will commence yet another huge emigration wave... As a youngster working a decently paid job (by Lithuanian standards), I still cannot afford to move out of my parent's home. The rent prices doubled in the last 3 years and more and more people like me move in back with their parents. You would expect the prices to go down since the population is decreasing, but somehow that's not the case. In 2022 more and more citizens of my country go into poverty due to a rise in the prices of food, utilities, etc. The government would much rather invest in a 231k Christmas tree or support Ukraine (no shade to Ukrainians), but our politicians should put their own starving people first.

Yes prices went up, but people are not starving in Lithuania. Thats bullshit. Prices are dictated by demand and rent or real estate prices are constantly climbing thats means people have money. You probably just dont know how to save it.
I'm a Grandson of the first wave to JAV. People leaving Lithuania has been going on for over a century. I still think Lithuania still has a bright future though.

@@Don-KedikBecause there were jobs, factories. After Soviet Union collapse and government starting their anti-Russian policies, all the factories are shut down and all the jobs are gone (except in Vilnius).
Unfortunately they don't allow citizenship by blood going back to grandparents like Italy does. Because my great grandfather emigrated before 1918, my bloodline is not recognized. I would be happy to have dual citizenship, live there and contribute to the economy and population of Lithuania but it is not allowed.
I was considering moving my family to Lithuania, but then I realized how poor the salaries are compared to cost of living. It will be difficult for the country to attract and retain workers.

I have been living in Lithuania for 3 years after the events in Belarus.
Unfortunately, the xenophobic policy of the government, lack of work and, first of all, very low wages in contrast to other countries, as well as the very high cost of living in Lithuania. Human rights violations to newcomers who just want to live normally. Does not make it attractive for living. Now the cost of living in Lithuania is comparable to Germany, and wages are much lower. As well as taxes 46% + 21% VAT if you are a business owner. Such sums are comparable to other countries that are more highly developed.

In Bulgaria is the same.Population declined with 30 percent since 1989.For the last 10 years Bulgaria have lost 12 percent of its population. In 2050 the population will be half compare with 1989.

Yes, and thankfully we are about to make it even harder - new laws will make it so you can lose your Lithuanian citizenship even after it's granted. If you go against the country that is.
Also, why would we give citizenship to foreigners freely? If you have Lithuanian blood, it's very easy to get it. If you don't - why do you want it? Renounce your previous citizenship first and then ask for a new one, okay?
@@shemica16 No. Foreigners coming to work and pay taxes are doing US a favor and not THEM. They want the citizenship to be normal members of the Lithuanian society and being sentimental about "you're either one of us or our enemy" by citizenship is the worst argument ever. I humbly invite anyone, except for Russian citizens to come live in Lithuania, and press for looser citizenship laws, because you are all welcome in this country as workers and cultured citizens.

You want looser citizenship laws? I see you want a bunch of Ruzzkies coming here, voting, being elected to Seimas and making laws here? Bc that's what's gonna happen. The only reason we don't have a problem like Latvia, Estonia and even Ukraine which have big Ruzzian minorities is because we're strict. We have some occational disaggreements with Poles, but at least they don't work against our country.
We refused to give post soviet Ruzzians the dual citizenship. They're free to get Lithuanian citienship if they renounce their Ruzzian one though. But they don't want to. That's why our populatin shrank so much after independence - a lot of that was Ruzzians going back to mother Ruzzia. The ones that stayed - they have permits to live here and have every right except voting and going into politics.
And we're not the only country that has strict rules like this by the way. Japan, for example - same thing. You have to renounce your citizenship to get a Japanese one.
@@shemica16 Agree about citzenship limitation. There is the question of allowing overseas citzens more representation. From what I understand , there is one Seimas representative for the overseas citzens. I am in principle against overseas voting rights since people overseas should not decide the outcome of local elections and decide local issues . Of course, the exception being people having work permits, student visas,in other words people having temporary residency overseas.

I lived abroad (UK) for nearly 7years and came back to Lithuania just before covid. I wasnt planning to stay, but.. covid...:D Anyway no regrets even with this economic crisis its not that bad rn.

My subjective POV (me being a young Lithuanian myself):
Lithuanians are not prone to cold approach and get to know strangers (doesn't matter if they are from their own ethnicity or foreigners). Lithuanians are afraid to expand their social circle, probably due to lack of social skills and fear of the outcomes of these social encouters getting to be akward, cringe.
We all here deal with our own problems, mainly mental. Nevertheless, most of us ARE friendly to everyone (at least I personally am) and we surely welcome foreigners like you to our country!

interesting thing (for me) is, my wife's family all live in Kaisiadorys - we go there every 14 months or so, and while small, they seem to be building more and more there (they just put in ANOTHER grocery store, Lidl, near a bunch of new houses that were being built near the hospital) - it's small ... very small ... yet, they are still building more and more thigns there ... I never understood how that could happen (unless money is being 'washed' somehow, which wouldn't be that far fetched) - anyway, Kaisiadorys is, in my opinion, the perfect little village! Everything you need is there (5 grocery stores, all basically next to each other, a hotel, 3 pizza restaunts), very walkable and and easily accesable train station - Kaunas is only 30 mins by train and Vilnius+-50 mins - I hope to retire there one day
Thats one of the reasons, why inflation on paper is 20%~, while in reality there are still proper amount of money floating around undocumented officialy, to evade tax.

I was an emigrant for a decade before coming back. As a tech worker I never had economical issues, however weather here is attrocious. I only came back to raise my child near the family and intend on leaving again once the kid is all grown up.

The suicide rate, drinking rate, atomisation (each for oneself, noone helps the loser, so the loser leaves) of the society was not that much historically high. It got that high only in ( the drinking rate) or right after (the suicides) the USSR corrupted the country and collapsed forcing people to begin to learn to live in what they were not taught to live in - in wild capitalism be8ng created by cheaters and those who didn't quite know how. It seemed that only money mattered then. People who had enough self-confidence anyway went West to work and get good money, rather than stayed for bad money or no work for money at all. There was no chance that Lithuanians would not leave to the richer European countries in masses. They knew they were quite well educated and they thought they were pretty industrious, strong and skilled to work physically. And that they were. They only had to see and learn some new technics abroad.

Yeah, a few ideas are: 1) no time (weather) to play it; long snowy winters; 2) no stadiums to play it in; 3) no rivals to play it well with; 4) no money to buy good players and coaches; 5) 50 years in the USSR where everyone played it badly as well, rarely played it abroad and Russians were taken first; 6) the corruption in the Lithuanian FF.
The little village my great grandfather came from had a little over 100 people in it (early 1900s), now, the village appears to only have 12 people. Urbanization seems to also be depleting the countryside

its not just salaries, the whole atmoshphere and infrastructure looks like from a horror soviet movie and gritty, mean faces each day, theres plenty of similar ex ussr bloc countries that have less suicides and higher growth factors.
Balts have an inferiority complex due to their militaristic weakness, political irrelevance and miniscule size. That and seething hatred towards Russia. Hatred and negative feelings poison you and ruion your mood.
It's shocking to realize that the whole of Lithuania have lower population than the capital city of my country, especially after finding out that its population keeps decreasing, although a small or shrinking population doesn't mean that Lithuanians are sentenced for extinction, if they make smart choices about their allies, and more importantly, if they protect their country from the troyan horse, which is multiculturalism.
Ahahah :))) seriously? :)) Lithuania has just recently let in an absolute record number of refugees in. Nearly all of them have ZERO knowledge of Lithuanian and at best very weak understanding of the traditions

Given fast aging society and young population leaving country, Lithuania do face uncertain future. Government do need to borrow more each year to finance pensions and social security system. I think with climate change and security situation, we might see lot of immigrants here from rest of Europe. Lithuania does have potential in terms of weather, security situation and economic opportunity. A lot depends on how government capitalize on it to bring back Lithuanians and people from other countries. More than 21 thousand foreigners came to Lithuania. In summer of 2022, 145 118 foreigners lived in Lithuania. Their share in the total population of Lithuania continues to increase and accounts for 5.1%. Compared to the same period last year, the number of foreigners increased by almost 60%. The majority of foreign immigrants are citizens of Ukraine and Belarus (about 31 percent of all immigrants). The majority of EU citizens are coming from Latvia, Italy or Germany.
So most of "foreigners" living in Lithuania are people from Russian-speaking countries? I heard that some Lithuanians saying that in the future there will be more Russians, Belarussians and Ukrainians than Lithuanians in Lithuania like in Soviet Union?

Why did the video use “delicate subject” for immigration to Lithuania? Is that euphemism for anti-immigration? After all, Poland is next door and are openly anti-immigrants. Wouldn’t immigration boost population and economic prosperity? Immigration is inevitable… specially when population drops to less than 1M people in few years.
It would be better to pass policies so that the Baltic people are encouraged to have children, perhaps tax breaks. Otherwise, the Lithuanian ethnic group ceases to exist. Immigration doesn’t solve that, it makes it worse, if you truly value diversity.

Lithuania must be open with immigrants in order that their population grow. Lithuania have one of the most beautiful girls in Europe, and that's attracts many men from Europe and outside for looking a wife!

Probably some will return. Here In Germany we have a similar effect between East and West: a quarter left the East after 1990 - but this has stopped and meanwhile some returning. Many went for better working opportunities to the West but when becoming pensionists they often return.
Oh well it's so many aspects why Lithuania for not rich Lithuanians it's awful place to live. Especially if you're man. We are not friendly to each other at all, man's barely taking care of themselves because they are mentally broke and nobody care about them,women's because of what they saw in their family (i mean poor childhood) searching for rich and handsome guy's who can fix their life. Lithuanians emigrate not only because of financial situation,but also because of emotional in Lithuania a lot of work places even where I went they measure from emotional prospective,most of the times they don't care your skills which is weird. I know a lot foreigners would say it's stupid,but this is another side of the coin,if you're are foreigner it's much easier to find a job or even a girl. I know it's sounds stupid,but it's true. So a lot of people leaving and working hard in western countries and up there companies valid your skills and because of the fact that for example in UK you can see all race and all type of people many years they just don't care,how you're looking and don't measure your skillset from their emotional prospective. Lithuanians hate each other,those who stays in Lithuania calling people idiots who emigrate and they not admit that country has a huge problems,when you lost 30% of population I think you should have give a point why people are leaving.

I met a dozen of Lithuanian men in Germany, as they were building fast Wlan-wire in our village. And they were all incredible humble and kind to each other. Never seen such talented people, they almost did the work with their bare hands. I think if things get really hard or if Lithuanians are abroad they really begin to appreciate what they have in each other.

I have a building company in Lithuania comon situation I got clients which one after you finish a job trying to not pay you and In the end they terror me that they post on social media things and my reputation will be ruined if I'm not drop a price by 10%. O Lithuanian job site pages you can find advertisement like "people wanted in Norway" and basically most of the times it's scams,there people in the end work in other country but get Lithuanian wage. So I know I'm unpopular and you can call whatever you want it's your choice,but numbers talk by themselves.
Lots of people keep moving out. The bureaucracy/government is a joke most of the time especially now. Add to the fact that many people find it to be slightly depressing as you stated. Quite the opposite USA to me and to my family members who lived there is a joke with its mass shootings and gun violence in general, horrendous private healthcare system, 3rd world infrastructure, car dependent infrastructure, over expensive universities that require students go in huge student loan debt that is very hard to climb out off, huge poverty levels, with many people sleeping under bridge in the tents, opioid epidemic with 100k people dying/overdosing every year because of it, extremist politics and etc... None of these exist in Lithuania.
Lithuania today is better choice to work and live than America. I mean my family members had to return to Lithuania because of how fcked up everything there is. I even know americans who live here and even they say what an improvement to live in Lithuania it is

I'm Lithuanian and I can tell u the real reason.Its government.They did nothing in the beggining to stop emigration and then they started to do something it was too late allready.Most of the young people left country and still leaving.Lithuanians are good working people and bad government is reason other countries can exploit this and just drag people to their own country.We still have lots of old people here, but i guess no one wants them.
It couldn't be as mind-numbingly depressing as Hungary (where I am from) and most of the Balkan countries. Most of the younger people there are probably gobbling up all that Western "values" and dream big without understanding their own limitations and real life in general. If you don't succeed career wise in your own country, you will most certainly not make it abroad. You'll have more competition there and well, good luck buying a house or an apartment with entry level wages anywhere in the EU.

At the same time, increasingly, men don't know their roles in society anymore. Many of them don't want to get married or to be fathers. Men wonder why they should be responsible and help raise kids when modern feminists disparage the role of fatherhood and the value of a traditional family. This is a big problem because declining birth rates and unstable family units undermine all of the social institutions and government welfare programs we currently have. Either we return to some traditional notions of the family or we scrap our current systems and try to replace them with something else. IMHO, the former well-known option is much better than the unknown and untested latter one.
