Just a heads up... might want to keep in mind some cats like climbing into the engine compartment under the hood to get warm in the winter. Had a couple of strays get chopped up in the cooling before in the past when I went to start the engine. Good practice to smack the hood a couple of times to scare any kitties out before starting the engine if you have cats around.
great advice😃mice and rats like to chew on electrical cables, cats like to chew on mice and rats. so it's always worth giving the engine cover a few slaps to check for sleepy lil' kitty-cats.👋🐱🐭
I grew up as a small town Iowa kid that spent his summers working on area farms and getting sunburned to a crisp in the seats of old John Deere B tractors. Retired now, I had a career in electronic manufacturing engineering. I have always said that the best engineers in the world are farmers with broken combines at harvest time. Good job, you guys!
In a year or two Laura will have her millwright papers & will be making videos of herself rebuilding John Deere engines & gearboxes with her eyes closed! Get yourself a press & a brass hammer for Christmas this year!
When I get into something like that and it works out well I always tell my young helpers, all these years and engineering school and I've never drove a train
You guys are very Capable in everything you do. Very interesting in your corn head repair. Watching you makes me feel I’m part of the farm life with you guys. Very motivating to me. Thank you for taking the time to share. Looking forward for you next vid 👍
What Grant said about UA-cam videos showing parts slide off easily, but when you come to do it yourself it's always a struggle, feels so familiar. I just replaced the brakes on my girlfriend's car, pads, discs and calipers. Right rear took me a week, oiling, heating and hammering to get it all off because it was so stuck. Left rear, about two hours (which I think is not to bad, being my first time doing it).
Great work guys. I think that it was "easier" than in times past because you got right on getting it fixed rather than not being able to get to it until 4 or 5 days had passed. Even though there was rust on the shift, and most likely at the gear box, that rust hadn't had time to rust together and make that nasty fussy mess that has been there before. A few hours can make a huge difference
Amazing video as usual! Watching you from Guayaquil, Ecuador, South America. Remembering good memories when I was a kid in the 80's. My father (+) had 2 old combines, he was agricultural engineer and used to take me for a ride on the combine at rice harvest time because he knew I loved the machines.
I'm learning so much watching you guys. You 2 make a great team. I'm loving the daily videos and not looking forward to "once a week videos", even though I know it's going to happen. I know you appreciate us, but I appreciate all your hard work in posting a video every day. Great job.
Laura and Grant, that rain couldn't have come at a better time, the combine had to be repaired anyway. Grant, I am impressed with your ability to repair almost anything. Laura will soon be able to do it herself, watching what you do. The kittens are so fluffy. Love to you both from Mike. ❤
UA-cam is awesome for doing research on most any project you need advice on. I had a heater core on my daughter's car. Manual said to drain the freon, found a video that had it out in 10 minutes. Great advice Grant!
Whew! I was sweating it out, wasn’t sure if a vid was posting today. In my opinion you have the BEST channel on YT. Enjoyable, relaxing, fun, learning (I live in a very big city), and more. Plus your Beautiful looks, never let her go Grant. I’m. 72 yo so don’t worry young man 😂😂.
Hi Laura, I've been a viewer for 2-3 years. My wife and I purchased a small farm in California. I needed JD help caring for, repairing, safe usage, and ran into you and Grant on UA-cam. I've really enjoyed learning from Grant, yourself, and a few other channels that go into detail. Between the manuals and UA-cam, I've been able to get new tasks completed. I've mowed corn before on a big farm in ND, but I've never taken apart and repaired a head. You do have to create a shop with the necessary tools to work on larger equipment. I would enjoy learning more about the settings on the Pioneer Corn Hybrid app. Why do you and Grant use one setting over another?
Thank you for your videos, I love seeing your happy face every day. I am a grain farmer in Queensland Australia. Several years ago I started watching "Harmless Farmer" and watched everything he posted until unfortunately, he died. Now I watch your videos and some others.
I spent a week and a half trying to get the coil for the PTO off my JD lawn tractor. All the videos, were at worst hit it with an air hammer to vibrate the penetrant oil in. No, I had to craft a bracket across the top to put a hydraulic puller on. And then it refused to budge after being under pressure all night until I tried a couple last minute pumps before I took a torch to it. It took so long as I was running to buy ever more aggressive tools.
Great to see you guys at it again. Absolutely love your videos! Just remember to be safe. I just see on the news that a fellow Nebraskan farmer who was the husband father and grandfather died in a accident.
We're expecting a weekend of rain. Especially tomorrow ( Saturday 10/14) heavy rain. But, a lot is done. Kittens running amok! Beautiful portrait of a farm family!
I was an apprentice Heavy Equipment Mechanic for 4 yrs, and a Journeyman for twenty more. Your aptitude for things mechanical is way above most people your age, male or female. And yes, I've often used UA-cam videos to clarify procedures I wasn't familiar with. I retired as a Highway Dept. Shop Foreman having learned the profession on the job. It's clear you can do anything you set your mind to.🤠👍
Thank you for the daily updates. They show that there is more to farming than just planting a crop, waiting for it to grow, and then harvesting it. Equipment brakes, weather delays you, etc. You go out into the fields before the sun comes up and go home after the sun sets. And there are the kittens that make your day complete.
Cool video. Thanks for sharing the repairs on the farm, like this combine repair, and the big water pumps, and pivots and stuff. The daily videos you share shows just how much of everything is involved from planting seeds, to market the crop, and everything in between. You guys work hard and wear a lot of different hats on the farm! Hope you hit your 500k 🎯 goal soon!
Thanks for another great video Laura and Grant. It was interesting. You had to take quite a bit apart to get that gearbox out. Think letting the dealer overhaul the gearbox is a good move. You can do the remove and replace and let them fix the gearbox. That shaft came out fairly easy. Hopefully it will go back together as easy. Rainy days are good for this kind of repair work. That little kitten is really cute. Likes that floor sweeper. Thanks for everything. You both take care and be safe. The Iowa Farm Boy.
To be able to watch you and Grant deal with this broken gear box amazes me. Just jump in and get it done. Thank you so much for your hard work brining your everyday life to us. I really appreciate every aspect of your farm life you share with us. Please keep up the good work.
def: Laura: farmer, mechanic, business manager, super model, cat whisperer, spokesperson, wife, teacher, videographer, actress... did I miss anything? Laura and Grant I really enjoy the vids and learning about farming. 🚜
I started putting lithium grease on anything that has a tendency to rust and seize, I think it lasts even longer than anti-seize and it's quicker and easier to apply. Except for exhaust bolts/nuts/clamps, there you'd still want to use the high temp copper anti-seize.
Thanks once again. I love you showing how things work. You explain things so well and make the complicated looking things so easy. Please keep making these videos as they are quite entertaining. Yes, I realize a lot of work goes into getting the final product to where we can watch it on UA-cam.
I’m impressed. Just take the gifts that come your way. And give thanks for it. It’s rough enough farming with out the brake down but it’s still going to happen. Prayers are with you guys for a great harvest.
Oh yeah it helps to have the pump of the Jack on the bottom,as gravity pulls everything to the bottom side lol it’s just funny, thanks BigAl California
Just ordered me a Laura Farms Hoodie! Winter is upon us, and I'm low on Hoodies! Been a fan Of Matt and Demo Ranch for 10 years!! Glad you picked him to handle your Merch!... Was EASY to get a Military Discount too!.. Thanks to Bunker Branding for that option!.. God Bless you!.
You are probably aware of this but as it gets colder the kittens will look for warmth any where they can find and at times they will climb up inside the engine of your vehicle, and the results of that are obviously not good. Something to be aware of. Just triggered my memory when the kitten showed up in the barn looking like it came from the jeep.
Just using the cordless ratchet is doing more than most men could do. But as a VERY experienced mechanic, how you put it back together is WAY MORE IMPORTANT than taking it apart. If you do it correctly, like it clearly was the last time, then next time will be just as easy. If not easier. Have faith in set screws. Make sure they are tightened properly. I'm sure I'm not telling anyone anything new. You clean up quite nicely for the add. Your beautiful hair is getting SO LONG!! Bravo!!
MUST BE NICE TO HAVE ALL THE LITTLE HELPERS AROUND THE SHOP NOW. I WATCHED YOU PLANT THE NEW TREES AND I SURE LIKE YOUR YARD WITH AKLL THE TREES YOU HAVE ON THE PROPERTY. DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE ONE BUT YOU SHOULD PUT A PICNIC TABLE, OR TWO ON THE PROP0ERTY AND ENJOY EATING OUTSIDE WHEN THE WEATHER IS SO NICE AND HAVE THE FAMILY OVER. FOR A B/Q; eNJOYING ALL THE VIDEOS.
Hi you two, you should have given the dealership you're Go Pro, they could make a video and show you what broke and you could have a day off videoing?. Great watching you through the years. All the best Richard 🇬🇧
Here from Hawaii daily and a faithful watcher. Great team work and boss lady always learning so the future looks bright, godbless you both and the crop.😊
We always rebuild our gearboxes every year right before harvest they are cake and cheap insurance. Corn heads take alot of abuse there is alot of shock loading on the gears and bearings. Takes about 2 hours per box to take apart and clean and reassemble once you've done it a few times and we keep 2 extra ready to go for that harvest time emergency.
You are doing great, and my hats off to Grant for getting more into the making impressed. The breakdown would make me think a little harder each time about cornhead placement in the field. You all think it's no big deal, but that must be expensive. I mean, the corn is a bit higher up, even bent over, it seems. I mean, disk if you go too high. Back yard farmer here don't listen to me lo Men can''t help but figure. After a while, you'd learn the bad spots of a field's drawls. your video's are great still wish I was a farmer. I think you all are doing great.
Laura; tells us that she's not mechanically minded: Right after using an impact wrench to pull off a part from a combine? After we've seen her change oil, replace parts on multiple vehicles, get an engine working in the field, get a pivot working, help Grant replace the distributor, and do at least a dozen other things that would intimidate most folks. Side note to Grant: I'm soooo glad that I'm not the only person who UA-cams videos, goes to remove (the brake pads on a car) and then finds that it takes 3 days because a bolt won't come off, and you finally have to cut the whole thing off! Ohboy.
As a life long do-it-yourselfer. It's fun to watch you 2 get your hands dirty fixing everything you can on the farm . The money you save doing it yourselves will add up a lot over a lifetime.
Hey Laura, Grant and kitties, oh and bashful Dad, here in Central Texas we water new trees twice to three times a week depending on if we get a rain and the amount. And of course how much water the variety of tree needs. Just a thought, good , bad or indifferent. Your call. Trees sure take off good and are set in quick that way.
Waiting to see Pioneer make it virtually into farm sim world with virtual hybrid corn seeds 😊 love your vids Laura. You do awsome job with with both you & Grant.
Exhausting for you guy's but as a viewer of your channel, I love harvest time and seeing how proud you are seeing and finishing of all your hard work cultivating your products that keep you doing what you love and loving what you do. Despite all the difficulties you diligently overcome no matter what it is!👍😎
I really like the videos on the inner workings of the farm and its equipment. The combine is a fascinating piece of equipment and have researched how n the heck it can do what it does. Amazing!! I also know you have gotten dibs on the kittens. I will be really interested to see how many you let go LOL!!!!!! Cats are amazing little creatures that working around the pondee will constantly bring a smile to your face.
Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the daily videos. I know it takes up a lot of your and Grant's time, especially during the busy harvest season, but you do a great job of narration and videography and the videos are both entertaining and informative. Keep 'em coming! - :)
This was one I was hoping for. It's very interesting to see how the corn head works. Thank God it's so modular, so you can just take out the one bad part, and not disassemble the whole machine. Thanks for all of the kitten footage, too. 🤠👍
They Are Awesome While They Are Working But It's A "Bummer Dude" when They Are Broke Down Just Like Anything Else!! 😒 Thanks For Sharing Today!! Keep Smiling On!! 😄👍👊❤️
My only tip is take a picture of the project before taking it apart, this is coming from a mechanic for 30yrs great video keep up the good work God bless from GA stay safe
just want to say that I want to say I was happy about how you handled Grant's father not wanting to be in videos. Too many youtubers have zero respect for other people and it was nice to see you honoring his wishs. Have a great harvest.

You know you've succeeded if, when you've put it all back together again, there are no parts left over 😁
Yeah and afterwards you're thinking damn im definitely going to do this more often and keep it lubed up nicely. Which you never will of course. haha.
Great work guys. I think that it was "easier" than in times past because you got right on getting it fixed rather than not being able to get to it until 4 or 5 days had passed. You are definitely doing your part on the race to 500k Laura. Daily vlogs have to be draining at the end of your farm work. Thanks.
Enjoy your work and the videos of your life on the farm.
Thank you from the Pacific Northwest 👍

GREAT JOB !!!! love to see the family teamwork !!!
Great to see the g/box getting removed...hope you get it back soon....stay safe you both
I have watched 👀 u guys a lot and I am very impressed the way u all help each other 😊
Don't apologize. Kitties are so adorable 😍 💕
Happened to my uncle. It wasn’t pretty.
So AWESOME seeing the kittens, learning how to be farmcats, you and GRANT are doing AWESOME with your videos!!!! Look forward, to them always!!!!!!
Just using the cordless ratchet is doing more than most men could do. But as a VERY experienced mechanic, how you put it back together is WAY MORE IMPORTANT than taking it apart. Love you Laura, your video are always entertaining for me, also love when you show us your Cat and kittens in real life farm day.

I love Laura Uses Power Tools time. She doesnt get intimidated easily thats for sure.
😍👍Now you need to clean that shaft until its spotless before you put it back in, youll be glad you did when you break the next gearbox
