Great video, Hanna! You are doing such a great job. As a salicophyle, I love watching your video's. I tried your beginners' video and the basket I made went very well! Thank you so much! (I had some previous experience, with weaving though!). One minor remark, if I may: when talking about Salix, one should not refer to "family". In fact the family is "Salicaceae", meaning it comprises Salix, Populus and Chosenia. If you want to refer to just (all) Salix, it is the "genus" that is concerned. This is taxonomy, of course, but since you are so extremely well versed in growing and weaving Salix, I thought you might appreciate this minor comment! Thanks again for your immense devotion to the Salix genus.

Such an enjoyable video, thanks for the info. Only just started making baskets after clearing my garden and having a whack of bramble and I thought I should make something out of it if I could. After fortuitously seeing a vid about it I have made a few things from it - all very charming! 😁

My mum knits and I've tried a few times but haven't managed to find a flow, but as soon as started weaving I zoned out and started breathing heavily! It's so nice to be in that zone.

Wow Hanna, I'm so thrilled to find you and your channel! My husband and I have finally found land to build our homestead and we have two streams and several springs where there a lot of what appear to my untrained eyes to be willows growing profusely already. Even if they're not willow I still wish to grow some to use for making things for the garden like trellises, etc, fences, furniture, baskets, etc! I absolutely LOVE the gorgeous colors of your different types of willow. It would be very interesting to me to see these various varieties both fresh and dry side by side to see what colors they dry to from what they are fresh. As I probably won't be planting such variety as you, it would be helpful in the process of choosing which varieties to plant or at least start with. Thanks again.

Take a look at Dingdongs nursery in WA....huge variety of, well, varieties.
Awesome, I got my willow from Dunbar Gardens here in the USA and some on eBay. I was freaking out this Fall because my main propagator plot was hit with this black funk this year. Turns out it is Wooly aphid honey due mold, telling me that I put too much chicken manure mulch around it this last spring calling the aphids in to rectify the high nitrogen. So not a big worry but was happy to finally find out what was going on! Great video on your willow as some I recognize but others are very new to me. You have a great pallet or willow there! I have really been enjoying your channel. The weaving videos have been so interesting. I find that the weaving terminology is so diverse depending on where the weaver comes from. There is an Irish rand or almost a braid that was used on lobster pots or root vegetable storage baskets that intrigues and dumbfounds me. I found a version on a newspaper rod weavers channel that spirals interestingly braiding large openings that make the basket light and strong. Still have not figured it out yet, as I see what is being described but can't help but feel there has to be a stronger and better way to do this. So working on willow plots here and trying to figure this new technique out. I have both willow and yucca here so thinking that most of these techniques can be used for both in certain applications.
Question: Are there any willow varieties you really hate? Kind of a moronic question, but was thinking in terms of invasive or not useful in the least varieties.
Hi Bonnie, I have seen that black 'mould' like fungus on willow grown at a friends place. It does not seem to damage the willow too much. Interesting that you found it was newly fertilised soil that caused it. Great to know. The Irish weave as it seems to be called now is in fact a 'mouthwale' used at the finish of a creel, a traditional Irish basket. It looks really nice and I like the contemporary applications. There is a video from another basket maker on UA-cam about it, his channel is called basketcase. There are plenty of willows that are not suitable for basket making. Most of them really. They are branchy, not flexible enough, and usually grow too fast. I prefer to focus on the ones I really like. Then I always try out new varieties to see how they do here. And that means that sometimes I find another jewel!
@@HannaVanAelst I enjoy that basketcase channel as well. this is the video that got me excited about this technique but finding it a bit awkward. ua-cam.com/video/w1p1uEleikc/v-deo.html I am thinking my yucca fibers would work better than my willow but wondering why a simple twining 2 or 3 or more wouldn't be a better stronger approach. So I am trying to figure it out.

Just a friendly tip for any future weavers browsing the comments: If you live in an area with Japanese Beetle problems (I.e. the eastern US) try to avoid Salix triandra. The beetles chew them to bits in the summer and the plant responds by pouring out side shoots like mad. Out of 10 plants I have not gotten any useable osiers for weaving. S. purpurea on the other hand is hardly bothered by beetles, so it is a very good choice in the eastern US. The ornamental S. integra 'hakuro nishiki' is another good willow species in areas plagued by the beetles. S. discolor, while not necessarily for weaving, is prone to beetles. I will be testing S. albaXvitellina 'britzensis' and S. myrsinifolia 'black skin' this coming summer.

I just purchased some willow cuttings from France . Im in Canada. I jumped on the purchase because it was candy to my eyes and i thought it was a good price. I was sent the cuttings with no identification. I dont know what willow they are. I see yellow red maybe brown and green . So i do not know anything about the growing difference of them all. Should i be concerned about roots if i plant any 3ft from the house or may some grow fat and others thin? Ive already learnt so much from your channel. Im glad i stumbled upon it.

Id start them in pots. Willow roots can be a pain, especially close to foundations, leach lines, sewer....

Concerning the colour of your willows , is willow be like hydrangea that , if you had some mineral or copper I'm the soil would influence the colour of the sticks .
I'm a beginner who wanted to plant a patch .
I was very interested to see your channel about growing willows. I would like to grow my own for making wreaths. Would you have any idea if I have to dry it first then soak it and then weave it into wreaths? I know you are a basket maker but thought you might know. I live in the northeastern USA.

Wonderful video. Thank you! You mentioned some basket willows will grow in partial shade. I have a limited area of full sun so I’m wondering which varieties might be worth trying on the shadier edges of my sunny area.
Usually the more vigorous varieties, like triandras and viminalis will not suffer from a little shade.

Hannah, what would you use to grow live fencing? I'm looking for more sustainable fencing solutions that I can use throughout the years in our large farm. Hi Matthew, Thanks! I use living willow sticks to make the living fences. The variety is viminalis but other varieties are good too like brown maul or vittelina.

Enjoyed this video very much. I live in town and would like to grow some willow along a chain link fence. I'm wondering if the willow will spread into my neighbour's yard. If I decide to remove the willow in a few years, would that be difficult? Thank you for the video.
Hi Pam, I have never seen basket making willow spread via roots. Other more vigorous willow could though so pick your varieties carefully. Also if planting in a garden close to buildings etc be careful about underground pipes and drains etc. Willow roots will search them out and will block them over time. If you would like to take the plants out later in time it would be like digging up any other plant. As you will cut the willow back annually anyway, this will keep the roots from growing too strong.

Thanks for all your great info. I am looking to grow willow to make furniture. I am wondering where I can find out which types would be long enough and strong enough for that. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Any type like triandra, viminalis or rural would be good. Leave it standing for two years to have bigger, chunkier wood to work with for furniture. Good luck!

It is not because of any sanctions. I only sold my cuttings until January, it is spring here now, the willow has started growing. I can't sell outside of Europe because of plant regulations as willow cuttings are classed as living plants. I do not have a licence to sell outside of EU.
I have aussie, black and sand willows on my property. Can they be used for basket weaving?

You can weave with any willow. Not all will be easy or nice or hold it's shape as those selected for basket making.
