I really needed that reminder that interactions with my real self aren’t confined to the margins of my time! SAHM culture right now pushes that so hard that I really think this is the first time its actually clicking that I’m me all the time, not just after bedtime. I like to think about motherhood throughout history: was God unfaithful to moms back then if they didn’t get me time or hours away each week? Is the real me kept in a closet until she gets an hour to read at the coffee shop?! Of course not! We can be nourished and satisfied right in the middle of our daily lives. 🤍
Several things: 1. Thinking of gardening, baking, and sewing as LEISURE activities instead of chores. It's literally life changing for me, life giving! 💚 2. My real self is ALL THE TIME is an astounding concept because culture has taught otherwise. Do you know of the saying, who you really are is when no one else is around? And also, like you said, the thought that when we are alone or have a few hours out, that's the real us! But you are SO right about it being all the time! Think of who our kids see! For them, that's the real us whether we think of it or not.

It's so funny . I used to have 3 books going at all times in this vein basically my entire adult life. Until i became a mom Right now with littles I can only manage one at a time. My books are on my phone. Audiobooks ftw
You hacked the ratio early! I think the little years shift everyone's literary life. I also relied heavily on audiobooks when my hands were full of babies!
This is only my 2nd visit to your channel. I would live to see some book recommendations for moms. I am thinking through the idea of a quiet time at some point in the day. I really struggle to pick up a book (for myself) unless I know my kids won't need me. I find it easier to read aloud to them. They all enjoy it and have good attention to it. I would like to get in the habit of reading for myself again. Thanks!

That was the series that pulled me from reading only practical, non-fiction theological reads into a wider, deeper reading life. If you've read those (or don't want to start there), I recommend pulling from: Piranesi The Awakening of Miss Prim Pride and Prejudice The Screwtape Letters The Great Divorce Middlemarch Hannah Coulter One of these should strike your fancy! Some old, some new...but all very good.
Hi Carolyn! Welcome! Personally, I like holding a book. I think there is something a little magical about flipping a page and smelling the book. It's a whole embodied experience. But if an e-book allows you to borrow books, purchase them, travel/carry them, is a wiser option for this season (late night nursing, etc.) or financially, I'm thankful for the technology to get books to people.

Random question, but how do you keep your couches so clean with children? We have nice white couches that were passed down to us, but everyone keeps saying they’ll get so stained when our baby gets to be a toddler and up. Is there a way you avoid that happening? 😅 Thank you!
Oh, this is a funny one. If you look closely, our white couch is not that clean. I mean, it's clean, but it has stains in a number of spots. We actually bought it because they boasted how easily it cleaned and all I can say is they should've paid my children to test it, because, false. However, I've learned that natural fibers are more easily cleaned than artificial and you can teach young kids to do a "face/hand" check before they jump on the couch. (Their friends, however, are another matter.)
It changes! But when I made this video it was the Circe Institute’s “30 Poems to Memorize (Before It’s Too Late)” and I was memorizing Gerard Manley Hopkins’ “God’s Grandeur”. Highly recommend book, poet, and poem.
