This is one of the greatest Barbershop performances of all time. It’s up there with Cuddle Up, Lucky Old Sun, etc. for me. Plain, simple Barbershop sung by the best quartet currently singing. Really really tough to beat
@@fjorddriver I LOVE theirs, too! Bluegrass Student Union is my favorite quartet of all time. I was just referring really to live performances on stage
And THIS is why Vocal Spectrum are one of the greatest quartets to grace the society. Every chord is so damn rich. They really breathe life into every song they sing.
i remember when this video came out, my friend showed it to me as i was getting into barbershop. i didn’t understand why it was such a good performance. looking back, i realize how much i’ve grown with barbershop and in singing.
Does it not astound you that they can do something like they did (3:26-3:35) and then pick up and not lose a semitone of key? Really? These four guys create MAGIC!
Wow. One of my favorite pieces, done beautifully by my favorite quartet ever. And Mayor Shinn doesn't come in to break it up at the end. Thank Heavens!
instant classic was good, but the voices in vocal spectrum mesh and work together so damn well. definitely best bass tone i've heard, and that lead's tone is amazing as well
This is honestly one of the best performances I have ever seen!! You guys are one of my favourite quartets ever, and this song still gives me shivers when I listen to it! Brilliant harmonies and amazing tune! I love this song. Keep it up!!!
@4:36 That very last "only you"... It's so sharp, my brain just doesn't know how to handle it. It's like something shorts out in there every time I hear that last chord.
+Scott Chatten The problem was Scott, there were a few versions of my arrangement available through BHS, but the PUBLISHED version, Stock #209616 is nearly identical to what Vocal Spectrum sang, with the exception of a few lead pickups that were either sung by 2 or 4 parts. But it is virtually identical.
The decade of the new millennium saw some of the greatest international quartets to ever grace the stage. Can't say I've really cared for the last quartets the past few years, or during the 90s (at least after 1993). Platinum, Michigan Jake, Realtime, Vocal Spectrum, Max Q, Crossroads, Powerplay. The only quartets that I really didn't care for were Four Voices and Gotcha.
Such a great and fun performance by one of the greatest quartets ever. Also, am I the only one that hears a slight undertone on the last chord? An octave below Chris (bass) is what I'm hearing.
something so American culture, it should have the full support of the government and it saddens me that it doesn't but it saddens me more to see the total collected so far only $1610 dollars today january 1 I would think that something like this should already have a collection of at least $100,000 It is incredible that societies that sponsor war and other bad things do have full support and move hundreds of millions of dollars I wish I had a lot of money to support something like this I am a musician, guitarist and singer ... and of course I love vocal harmony and even more of this type, I am a fan of a cappella groups It is sad to see how in these times of crisis the governments are more concerned with financing the war than culture Maybe one day the human being will understand that the only beautiful thing that remains as a trace of our existence is culture and in particular music. I hope that the BHS can continue to exist and give to the world this beautiful art of a cappella harmonic singing.
4:44 they should have done an F#7 chord on "you…" and have a pregnant pause before the tenor sings, "YES, IT'S YOOOOOOOUUUU" and the others go "OOOHHH, YES IT'S YOUUU"
Nearly perfect rendition . . . except at 1:32 where the lead takes the solo, "It's you in the sunrise . . .". I'm probably too used to hearing the Bills version where all four men sing that line. Also, I think it was a big mistake for him to go lower on "-rise." Again, I'm probably just used to the original version where "sun-" and "-rise" are the same note. Sounds much better that way, imo. This small section of Vocal Spectrum's version sounds very wrong, but they do a beautiful job otherwise.
That's a great song! When I hear that run from 4:19 to 4:25 it always reminds me of some Disney song but I can't work out which one. Anyone? Maybe it's just generic Disney.
+MistaTwigz haha well thanks for the obvious xD I was just wondering why cause I have the music and its a bit hard to practice with on the piano after the key change. :P
This is a Beautiful song, and done very well. Only one problem! 3:35. Why stop the song and say "Barbershop". To me that is worst thing you can do. I don't know if this break was done for humor purposes or hey look at us, we are singing a chord very loud, We our so GREAT! Sorry, Just let the performance speak for itself.
The moment was for humor and in response to the crowd cheering in the moment, which they typically wouldn't do at a more serious event, but they were having fun with it here.
Because they can! And because the chords were ringing so exquisitely that they had to stop so the audience could take a breath and think Holy @#$&* before they started singing again! My 💓 left my chest.
@@karenreese4910 Your comment is reinforcing my point. Let the moment happen. Take the pause. Awesome. To me saying "Barbershop" takes away from the moment. It would be the same if a lead singer holding out a high note in a metal band, then stating "that's Heavy Metal". You don't have to say it. Let the song and performance make the moment.
@@mtrithart lol as a performer you have to be able to play along with the audience, and in this moment the crowd wanted to cheer and have fun. Not a serious environment. That audience has been listening to groups perform in a competition setting, where they most definitely would not have done that. In this moment, VS doesn't break the pause, the audience does, and in a way that they don't normally do. So VS briefly plays off of that in a way that validates them. Like the audience cheers to say "Hey, we really like barbershop!" and they respond with "Hey, we like barbershop too!"
I love that Jonny cracked a joke and they all broke up; it's one of my favorites moments. Shows how much fun they're having and that they love what they're doing. It adds to their performance.
I was disappointed that the tenor didn’t take the lead at the end I was looking forward to him singing those sweet notes very gently because they are high still a beautiful version
if my opinion is worth anything ( and it isn't) this is an example of incredible vocal craft, and not a good performance because it's not true to the song. The song was used as a vehicle for harmonic gymnastics, but during it all, I forgot the gentle, loving message of the song. Almost insulting to the song. Maybe that's not scored, but I think it should be.
Greg, you and I must have listened to two different recordings. I ask you to listen again from the chorus and feel how they caress the words and the music. Putting Jonny Moroni's aside to the side (which only was done in response to audience reaction), they delivered one of the most heartfelt versions of the song you'll ever hear. It may not be the interpretation you heard in the Music Man, but remember that this song wasn't written in the 1890s but in the 1950s, so it's not truly a period piece. I can picture this being sung to a girl with the feeling that they brought to the song and watching her break down in tears. Hell, I just about cried when I heard it and *that*, my friend, is the power of music to move us, to evoke an emotion. Thank you, Vocal Spectrum, for one of the best songs I've ever heard. :D

Vocal Spectrum is legendary...and they will probably go down as one of the greatest quartets of all time as the years go by.
"Barbershop."
Yes, Mr. Moroni, that it is. And a truly good version of Barbershop it is.

Eric actually hums the key quietly while everyone else is laughing so they can get right back to where they left off but, they are amazing!!
I heard them described by a fellow member of AIH as "A really good bass and three freaks of nature."
I find that to be a really accurate description.
I’m so thankful to have heard them live on several occasions. They are marvelous, but have worked hard to get there.
Still my favorite quartet to listen to. Such an amazing combination of voices and performed so flawlessly!
