Great video and tag! I too was shocked when I saw the "... My Mother..." title. I really don't like it. My answer for the poetry title would be "...of mice and men...", a line becoming a title. I love that you record reading stories for the children. Really great.

Hi Helen. I really don't like that title about the actress's mother either. I am not inclined to read books like that anyway, but the title was really off-putting. "Of Mice and Men" is a great choice. I actually started making my book videos for my little relatives before I started the channel, when I was just thinking about it. It was such fun! I loved your answers to this Pat, and to your commitment to including Salinger in your videos! I haven't read anything by Salinger yet, and there's a part of me that doesn't want to start with Catcher in the Rye. • @BookChatWithPat8668

@@aaronfacer Hi Aaron. Catcher was my first Salinger read, which I read for the first time at 13. After I read it and fell in love with it, I went back and read everything he wrote: Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenter and Seymour, An Introduction (Raise High…and Seymour-that’s one book), and Nine Short Stories. As a teen, I didn’t think any of the others compared to Catcher. Nothing affected me the way Catcher did. But I was 13-14 when I was reading every Salinger book I could get my hands on. I’m not sure how I’d feel about any of them if I were coming to them all for the first time as an adult. I believe Catcher is his first book, followed by Nine Stories, and then Franny and Zoey. I found some of the short stories really dark and disturbing. Catcher has a lot of dark themes too, but I just loved Holden’s voice and character. I do think it’s his best work, and certainly his most memorable. It’s really the only one of his books that I do revisit regularly. I’m not helping you out here, am I? I’m afraid if you start with his lesser works, you won’t read Catcher! I’m very curious what it would be like for you to read it for the first time as an adult. Will you identify with Holden in some way, as I always have? Or will you find him to be a whiney, self-centered teen, as some people do find him?
I will always see him as this incredibly bright, cynical kid who is also suffering horribly-and it’s much more than your normal teen angst. He makes me laugh, and I want to protect him at the same time.
I’m sorry, Aaron. I’m really not helping at all. 😊

I just loved it! I hope that you pick up some wonderful books for your daughter! Do you have Ezra Jack Keats' THE SNOWY DAY for her? One of my favorite children's books of all time. Anyway, I hope you do find some Salinger. His books are all fairly short, so it won't take you long to read them. I will be very curious to hear your thoughts, especially about Catcher. It's set in post World War II New York City, and it may seem very dated now (A Jaguar automobile costs, I think, $4000 in the novel!), but the themes--a teenager dealing with profound grief, the phoniness of much of adult society, the desire to preserve the innocence of children--feel timeless to me. "Still stripping after 25 years" will be the name of my new youtube channel devoted to macroeconomics and the poetry of Ayn Rand.
"April is the cruelest Month" was also the title of a short story by Cuban writer Cabrera Infante. It's online and I think I talked about it in one of my videos. It's an excellent short story to read with Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants."
