Thank you for your performance, it's funny to see you writing in Japanese I always though my friend Mourad and his brother were the only living Moroccans in the Land of the Rising Sun...
Lots of Moroccans in Japan now!
This is great! Well done. I don't think this is the first time I comment on this one. I have just read your description where you say this song is not a Moroccan song! Actually, It just happens to be. Or at least the main riff is from a Moroccan Gnawi song. There is a youtube documentary with Maalem Abderhman Paco explaining how it came about. The title of the song is self explanatory as well and a good starting point as to the origin of the song. The idea, of course, is that Jimi went to Essaouira, Morocco and found Gnawa music. The closest thing he could compare it to was Voodoo hence the title. I will try and find the documentary and a version of the Gnawa song.
+Hamada El Mansour I am also looking for that docummentary, if you happened to find it, please send it to my email.. thank you!
I have looked for quite a long time to find the documentary as I remember it. However, I could only find a heavily edited version of what I’d seen. You can find that here: ua-cam.com/video/tZq1aOFvynI/v-deo.html You can establish the link between Paco and Hendrix in minute 2.20- 4.18! I know this is the edited version because that blue, red and white stripped t-shirt (at minute 4.18) is what Paco wearing in the long version of the documentary!
I think the version I saw didn’t make the cut and must have been put on UA-cam by the cameraman or whoever had the tapes at the time! It was in 6 episodes of 17-26 minutes! It was probably taken down by the same person!
Now, the story as it was told by Paco, is they’d (Paco, Hendrix and a few other guys) ended up somewhere in Essaouira. Paco was tired and decided he needed to retire for some kip! He went upstairs and left his instrument (guembri) with someone else! Hendrix was working on a riff Paco had shown him! He’d asked the guy with the guembri to play the riff! Unfortunately, the guy couldn’t reproduce it, which led to Hendrix throwing a tantrum. Paco ran downstairs to find out what was happening and ended up playing the riff for Hendrix. You can find a version of the story here: ua-cam.com/video/eIvgYCjb820/v-deo.html - minute 18.30!
Paco doesn’t mention the song here but in the long version I saw, he sang the riff! This is what earned him his title (Tabib L’arwah) given to him by Hendrix himself! I have a funny feeling the title was actually "Voodoo Child" but got lost in translation- but that's just me!
Later on, I found out that the main riff from Voodoo Child is very close to an intro in a Gnawi song called Foulani! Now, if we entertain my theory, we could set the title (Voodoo Child) culturally, and establish a relationship between Voodoo practices and lilla practices in Tagnawit, which we know Hendrix went to and experienced!
Different accounts say different things about Jimi’s stay at Diabat beach! Some say 68 others say 69! No one has a precise date! We know the song was recorded in October 68, right after the summer! Assuming he spent the 68 summer in Morocco Voodoo Child would definitely be a direct product of the jams Jimi did at Essaouira! Oh...and Wikipedia mentions that Voodoo Child Slight Return "[...] is Hendrix's longest studio recording and features additional musicians in what has been described as a studio jam." Let's not forget that the song in its live versions varies in length from seven to 18 minutes suggesting that it originated in a trance tradition.
Thank you Hamada! That is very interesting! So far I have read that Jimi travelled to Morocco when he was with the Band of Gypsies and that is after he recorded Voodoo Chile. Thank you for the link!
Thank you for the comment!! And with some imagination, the gumbri can play almost everything!
respect !!!
Respect to you too!
You Rock ....
Thank you!!
Thank you for the nice comment, kabkakayem!!! And yes, that is one of my goals: to play in the Festival of Gnawa Music in Essaouira!
Its great, I prefer the traditional way of my country, but still you just showed one can take the relaxing deep melody of the guembri everywhere
Thank you brother. I like the traditional gnawa also. I wanted to know that the guimbri can do anything!
Thank you lukeslidewalker! Peace and love to you too!
@fwawo The sintir is tuned to the standard tuning which is: Top string Low-Eb, Middle string High-Eb, and Bottom string Ab!

nice playing. do you know where i can find a sintir in the states?
I would not know about the states, sorry..
hey mate i really need your help, i have a guembri but i dont know how to fix the strings to the neck? do you tie the top part of the string to that green ribbon and then tie it to the neck?
Yes, you tie the top of the string onto the leather ribbon (in my case, an electrical wiring cord) and tie the ribbon onto the neck in a special way.
Music name? 🤲🏻please
My artist name is “the firefly clan” but I don’t have an artist name for playing gimbri. The original song name for this video is Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix
cant see your face mystery musician? from new mexico
You can see my face in some other videos! Not so much mystery! Thank you!!
