- After a breathless couple of weeks in American politics it’s time for the Americast team to take stock. Has there been a more tumultuous time in American politics? And what can history tell us about what’s happening today?
This week we’re joined by former BBC correspondent and historian Nick Bryant who tells that Trump is as much product of U.S. history as JFK, Lincoln and Reagan.

The American civil war was not fought by Americans but over the colonies that where divided . The Napoleonic wars happened after that where us Brits had to come back and kick the Spanish and french asses there
You just buried the biggest part of American history by claiming people who supported the confederacy over the unionists where racist. I wonder sometimes would America be better today if the confederacy would have won the civil war. I know Europe would be today.
It's like all civil wars in history including that English civil war it's never over the people in that region killing each other really.

And yes America and the UK djf Europe ate divided but that's what happens when you bring the world it's problems to multicultural societies then don't tell people what's been going off around that world for 100 years and since ww2 and then not be honest about the future today leaving future generations to pick up the messes they create today.

I dislike the pretext of this question. One side just wants to live in peace and liberty, the other attempts to install a christo-fascist dictatorship. I think it is problematic to call that division since it is driven by one party alone.

We have always had great divisions in this country. The fact that people don’t realize this is due to not teaching proper history in schools.

All the comments citing the American Civil War are tedious pedantry. I am not impressed.
The one comment citing the upheaval of the late-60's and early-70's is interesting. The radicals of that time did not, however win seats in Congress or the Presidency, or even in State governments. The (limited) divide was more cultural....and it mostly evaporated in the consumer-culture of the 80's.

Certainly. Politics is fairly moderate in UK presently as usual. We live in a mature stable democracy compared to the US, France. German democracy is recent compared with UK. Partly this due to long tradition, partly due to the Westminster parliamentary system. Difference between UK dominant political parties is relatively small, probably smaller than in 1945, smaller than the times of PM Margaret Thatcher.

My point is: Your Labour government under Two-Tier Keir is dividing the UK to the point where there are riots all over the country and he is threatening to put dissenters in prison for very long periods of time. Biden's surprise was when he said in an interview with CBS News that will air Sunday that he is "not at all confident" that the transition of power will be peaceful if Trump loses the election, referring to the latter's statement that "if we lose, there will be a bloodbath." We have said before that America will become more divided whether Trump wins or loses, and here Biden reflects this concern. When divisions escalate, with major external challenges, retreat is natural.
When you have no secure borders, non citizens voting, and an invasion, any country is not together. And, they're will be a reply to my comment about non citizens voting. It happens: all you need to vote in America is to register. And i.d. 19 states give driver's licenses to people who cannot read or speak English. You can register to vote with a driver's license.
