What’s your favorite movie stunt of all time?
Buster Keating on the clock tower
The whole of Hero, maybe the sword fight in the rain
Home Alone. All of them. Legendary.
Hard to pick just one, but I do love the thrill of Tom Cruise hanging off the plane in the intro of M:I Rogue Nation
Fast and Faurios 8
One of my favourite Texas switches is less a stunt than a special effects extravaganza. In The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy opens the door to her house and outside is the technicolour world of Oz, they painted the entire house in sepia, and painted a body double Dorothy in sepia, had her open the door, so outside is a full colour set, and when the double is out of the shot, Judy Garland in iconic blue dress steps in from behind the camera. It's flawless cinema.
Wow this sounds incredible! Didn't realize that was a switch.
Which is the magic of cinema, my friend.
I had to go find that scene after reading that - ua-cam.com/video/YWFHeDcVNiw/v-deo.html what a cool shot.
Okay I definitely don't have an answer that tops this one.
@@EntertainTheElk Yep, here is that scene from _The Wizard of Oz_ ua-cam.com/video/x6D8PAGelN8/v-deo.html I can only imagine how peoples' minds were blown when they first saw that in 1939! In the days of practical effects they HAD to be clever. This is one of the reasons that this movie has stayed popular all these years later.
That Scott Pilgrim one will always be the best scene in that movie.
In a movie with a million highlights, that one is such a gem.
in any movie tbh

The NWA pulls a Texas Switch in-universe in Hot Fuzz when Angel chases them behind the flower shop.
There's behind the scenes of the switch in Scott pilgrim where you see Michael Cera watching the double send it through a window then turning to the camera looking extremely impressed
Yeah I tried finding a high res of that but couldn't.
Love a good Texas Switch! The one in Scott Pilgrim is truly the greatest one in cinema history!
Completely agree!
My favorite was the switch in Return of the King when Pippen gets thrown out of the hall by Denethor because it’s also a scale double switch.
It’s a great one. And looks seamless.
It’s so great because the character never actually leaves the screen. You see Pippins armor the whole time
Toby's fence jump from The Office is a memorable one
I just pulled up this clip and you're totally right!
Just had a look now. It's so obvious when you know about it and the guy on the other side of the fence has a completely different face.
We've come a long way since Steve McQueen driving across a field on a motorcycle was considered a breathtaking action scene.
Though it's pretty badass when he hurdles the barricade.
I think that's a great bit of action. Breath-taking because of the tension built up during the escape sequence and the emotional investment the viewer has for their success.
and then he shreds himself to pieces under the barbed wire
Eddie izzard has a good bit about that scene, can't think of Steve McQueen without that but if comedy coming to mind
Yeah, that Angel air flip is one of the funniest moments in Hot Fuzz.
And damn impressive, too.
Angel is my favourite Policeman Officer.
Everyone called him Angle, so I sometimes do as well.
The original Star Wars movies almost never showed the light sabres being activated. Usually a crewmember out of frame would switch the empty hilt with a version with the reflective blade (or vice versa) with sound effects giving the impression of a blade extending or retracting. It was effective because of two establishing shots in the first film, the first with the actors doing a freeze while the sabre was switched out, and spliced together, the second done with a trick with angles making it look like the blade was very obviously extending. Those two scenes were enough to get the viewers’ minds to fill in all the rest of the times.
My favorite is from the Breaking Bad episode 'Fly' where Walt falls from the second floor onto a drum and then onto the floor and the camera immediately zooms in on his face.
Great video, I really have nothing to add rather than praise the work and analysis.
The only thing that seems weird to me is the affirmation that only 22 people in the world can acomplish the globe of death. I've been in some cheap circuses in my youth in Mexico (when I didn't knew that captive animals were a bad thing) and I saw that act many times!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I went on a couple sites and kept seeing that statistic come up. It just reinforces the complication of the stunt and how that's definitely not Ryan Gosling pulling it off himself.
@@EntertainTheElk Yeah, it brings the point across. It was just a nitpick, and it was besides the main theme. Again, it was a great video.
I used to use the texas switch all the time for scenes that required gunfire but also hand-to-hand combat in the same cutless take.
Aww, you didn't include the switch from the dance scene in Airplane, where you get to see it happen! LOL
So does that mean the whole Birdman movie was a Texas Transition?
No mention of the amazing uncut 9 minute chase scene in True Detective Season 1? I really wondered which parts were stunt doubles and which were the real actors.
That long take of the drug raid in True Detective (season 1) is the coolest thing ever
Defo inspired by children of men. Both are great
I've seen that "Globe of death" thing live. In New Zealand in a tiny little town, performed by a circus. Doubtful it's all that special.
I had no idea this was a thing. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
agreed. the Scott pilgrim scene is the best. it will be iconic forever
3:15 Ah yes. Getting out of cars so dangerous you need a stunt double.
weird cause when he gets off a moving helicopter earlier in the film, it was actually affleck
Could be that the suit the double was wearing was much lighter and allowed him to effortlessly vault out of the car, or could be touched up with CGI, and when Affleck comes closer to the camera he's wearing the bulky 'hero' suit to sell what a badass Batman is.
@@AlexJay124 That's good observation skills. I might just agree with you on that one.
Speaking of Edgar Wright, his film "Soho" has a dance sequence which is a super complex series of Texas switches.
Excellent Texas switch into the ad at the end.
Tony Jaa's 4 story, single-take, battle-fest in "Protector".
Awesome!
There are no switches, it was all Jaa! Really under-used actor, the things he can do are out of this world.
There's a really effective Texas Switch in "Mission Impossible Fallout" at the beginning of the HALO jump scene to give you the impression that Henry Cavill jumps out of the plane right before Tom Cruise. Made all the more effective since you actually follow Cruise out of the plane.
It's great acting, great directing, great vision.. not fake.. it's how real good directors or actors do... act and hard work
The whole spiral hallway scene in The Protector is a masterclass for long take fight/stunt scenes. The texas switch comes up when Tony Jaa throws a villain over the rail where they switched a shop with a crash mat back to a shop. The behind the scenes footage for it is very interesting.
That's awesome. I love that scene but didn't catch that Texas Switch.
@@EntertainTheElk I just rewatched the scene. It isn't a super fast one. Second thug that gets thrown through the railing is like 4 stories high, he would die, and about a minute later they show the floor again with all the injured.

To answer your question, _What’s your favorite movie stunt of all time?_ it would probably have to be a stunt that I have no idea was a stunt.
You guys should check the flat switch in Kidding, it puts those "hidden behind a couch' gimmick to shame !
always love to see a new upload from you
Thank you! That means a lot. :)
Always love it when I see you've posted a new video!
Thanks! I really appreciate that. :)
My fav is the hot fuzz one especially for what happens after lol
It's a great one.
It's a little weird to mention the sponsor but MUBI is worth much more than they charge - given you are more into movies than the hype. Cool to see them sponsor your great work!
Agreed! Mubi has such great content and hidden gems I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else.
Reminds me of the “Kansas City Shuffle” from ‘Lucky Number Slevin’.
There was a time.
05:21 “Nice beaver”...
...oops, wrong scene 🤣
I see wot they did there.....nice distraction >
Good video and informative! A UA-cam commercial disguised as a documentary, revealed as a commercial for Mubi thanks to the Texas Switch! All wrapped up with a pretty bow. Awesome Show. Great Job!
A Place Beyond the Pines is friggin brilliant! So glad you opened with that example!
In Captain America: Civil War when Bucky jumps from the balcony to the lower roof. I love watching B Roll of that stunt because the camera man looks so funny in it having to track the actor/stunt double.
you tricked me!!! seamlessly switching to the ad... hhahaha nice one! loved the video!! great!
Thanks! Glad the two could flow into each other.
The narrative and storytelling were executed beautifully. Well done
I used a Texas switch in a short student film I did! Replaced a real hammer with one that had a foam head when the actors arm went off screen!
Scary Movie 3 has the funniest, IMO. When Rexx gets thrown out of the window and immediately stands up. That's a Zucker thing and I like that one best.
Honorable mention to Date Movie's blatant stunt double on the motorcycle. Not a Texas Switch, but still funny. Probably one of only two good jokes in that movie.
was expecting this to have half a million views. quality stuff my man!
Thank you! Hopefully it’ll climb to a million. :)
Awesome video 👏 👏 👏
Todd Vaziri points out cool Texas switches from time to time on his Twitter. One of my favorites is when the bus blows up at the beginning of Speed. It drives out of shot around a corner, and then the camera catches up to a stationary one, which explodes.
I really wanted to use that clip from Speed but I couldn't find it anywhere. That's a great example of a Texas Switch.
Not much to add, this video was so interesting!! I’m just that person that tends to notice when the stunt doubles face is clearly different, even when they try to make it not noticeable 😅
Best Texas switch is when Stewie from family guy jumps out a window of a building and lands inside a dumpster filled with trash
I've always loved this trick!
It's really cool, right?
@@EntertainTheElk Especially as just a game to try and spot it when it's used. Couldn't believe how often it's used!
Illusion, Michael...
Wow, I never heard of this filmmaking trick until you mentioned it, you make me appreciate the beauty of filmmaking even more. 🙏🙏
Yay! That's great. Glad I could help aid in that.
There's also other types, where they digitally paste the actor's face onto the double, or switch over to an entirely digital stunt "person" for the action then back to the real actor.
All the guys rewinding 4:20 - 4:23 in slow motion.
No reference of the Texas Switches done with Christopher Walken during the music video for Weapon of Choice?
Interesting that you ihghlight that sequence from The Naked Gun. In the scene where Frank Drebin is chasing the assassin from the hospital, when he (the suntman) drops down from the fire escape, and lands behind the car, you can see Leslie Neilsen waiting to come out running.
If I was an actor called upon to do stunts, this would be my Weapon of Choice...
I'm not even a little surprised Pattinson needed a stunt double to exit a car.
Scarlet Johansson doing the frankensteiner type leg throws in Iron Man 2 is another example of lazy switching. It is similar to the Bring It On clip where it shows the stunt woman doing all these cool moves and then cuts to Scarlet standing up. **blehhhh**
I wonder if this is in my recommended because of the random scary movie and naked gun clips I watched in the past week.
I've been doing the same thing
where the heck have you been ??? I haven't seen a new video by you in a year
Bah! This is so frustrating. I hate that UA-cam doesn't share my stuff. Click the bell icon so that way you're notified. Otherwise you're going to keep missing out!
When I watched Scott Pilgrim for the first time, I replayed that scene two more times just to appreciate it even more.
The Texas Switch was very popular in the series "Scrubs". It was also used in reverse in "Spaceballs"; "You idiots! You captured their stunt doubles!"
I don't normally comment on ad content... But The General is jaw droppingly good. The "throw the log at another one" stunt is near miraculous.
My other favorite is probably the opening airplane in The Dark Knight Rises.
First learned about this yesterday on Twitter. Good stuff.
That's awesome! Glad you enjoyed it.
I have pretty much always known when they do these switches, to me, it's so incredibly obvious and now I just it's name.
Well, this explains a lot... I'll admit, sometimes it's easier on the brain to just get fooled! Great vid!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the extra arrow in the thumbnail, I needed that.
To be fair it's one of the few instances in which an arrow can be justified so shut up, doc.
I aim to please!
A good Texas switch combined with a well executed "oner" works wonders. I was thinking about the Captain America scene when you mentioned it, lol. There's a funny one similar to Bring it on in Elvira mistress of the dark when she's on stage doing flips and then pops up. But like Naked Gun, it was done obvious for comedic effect. Especially since she's exaggeratedly out of breath. (That could have also been to highlight her bosom. It is Elvira after all). Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Well this was hella rad to stumble across
Perfect video 👌
Thank you!! :)
My favourite stunt is more a sequence, and that is the original ladder fight from Jackie Chans' First Strike. Iconic, brilliantly choreographed and wonderful use of props that introduced the world to a new superstar and reinvigorated the Kung-Fu genre (even though it's not strictly Kung-Fu.
A place beyond the pines is such an amazing movie
How very interesting. Like you know when it happens but you still find it awesome when done right.
Exactly right!
Favorite Stunt? Hard to say... but favorite Stuntman Hal Needham!
Thank you so very much for the video
Okay.... why the switch in that Batman scene? just to save time on him moving up the stairs?
The Texas switch. Not to be confused with the Kansas City shuffle, New York reload, Mexican Stand Off, or Chicago Typewriter.
I just now saw "The day LOST died." So now (if you're still doing those) you need to do the day "ALIAS" died to finish the Abrams madness
blazing saddles fight scene is great...or the car chase from the blues brothers...
The hot fuzz fence jump was especially great because it was a callback to shaun.
The one with Wet Hot American Summer, you can see the blatant switch because the stunt double goes farther back, and the actor jumps back into the scene. With the momentum of the stunt double, the character would have been a little farther back, and no need for the actor to jump forward into the scene.
Glad I found your channel! One of the highlights of my day whenever a new one hits
Thanks so much! I appreciate that.
Did you catch the second cut in the speedboat scene you pointed out? First couple fractions of a second, actors thoroughly soaked, water droplets everywhere. Then, that tiny cut/POV change, and suddenly they're not soaked, and the water droplets have magically vanished. CGI or some dodge-and-burn effects evident. In addition to the fact neither Travolta or Cage were in any portion of that sequence anyway. It's all doubled.
There's one in The Terminator (1984). At the beginning of the film, Reese slides down a metal balcony support, silently drops behind a squad car, and grabs a shotgun from inside. The switch is immediately after the drop, with the stunt double falling behind the car.
That's awesome!
Basic visual effect, but cool vid ;) keep up the good work ^^
Thanks!
icarly gibby fall takes the cake for me
I don't know this one. Link?
@@EntertainTheElk ua-cam.com/video/nDgUx9yUj4M/v-deo.html the stunt man knocked himself unconscious it’s crazy
Damn! That's a narly stunt. No faking that. He just flat out landed on his face.
At 2:24 you can see the people replacing the chairs in the toast iron 😊
The guy jumping over the fence in Hot Fuzz is my mate's uncle.
That's awesome!
favorite stunt, maybe the guy who falls into the electrified stain-glass window in "Poseidon Adventure" or the whole scene for that matter.
Kinda disappointed "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" didn't get a mention for comedic Texas Switch.
Haven’t even heard of that!
literally the first thing i thought of.
best one of these was when Erik Koston switched in then back out for Owen Wilson in the skate vid, Girl' Yeah Right.
"No warmup, first try, bitch! YEAAAAA right"
I didn't know it had a name even though I notice it a lot. Cool drop of knowledge.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video. Bit of a Texas switch of a title though.
i was noticing this in the opening scene of "captain america: the winter soldier". there's a shot where chris evans runs past anthony mackie at full out sprint speed with both their faces in full view, then evans goes out of shot as the camera follows mackie as he goes around the corner, showing captain america still sprinting full out halfway down the side of the reflecting pool, having gotten that far at superhuman speeds. i'm guessing they switched out evans for an olympic level sprinter placed a bit further along
i should have finished the video before typing that
Neat!
You should definitely watch “la Pianiste” it contains some of the best “how did you do that” shots
Thanks for the recommendation!
Came for the Scott Pilgrim, stayed for the lesson.
I prefer the scene where Scott Pilgrim gets thrown into a building then falls and gets back up.
Wow, I didn't know about most of these. Movies use a similar sleight of hand that magicians use. I wonder if any cowboy switches were used in the Prestige?
Yeah feels very much like the directors are magicians. And I even used a bit of narration from the Prestige in this essay. I mention that "you want to be fooled" in order to fully appreciate the Texas Switch.
great essay
Thanks, Shawn!
Thanks. Feed the algorithm xx
What movie is at 6:20? Seems familiar, but I can't place it.
