My thing is with Captain Marvel and people's issue with the "amnesia" storyline is that to me it mirrors my personal experience with PTSD. That was such a traumatic experience for her that her mind was protecting her by keeping the memories so far down and hazy. And I've had a similar experience, which made the movie really powerful and emotional for me. I don't know if that's what the writers were going for or if I was projecting my experience on the movie, but that actually made me connect more to it than any other Marvel movie or character. That's just my thoughts on it though.
I'm glad Captain Marvel didn't have a classic origin story, I'm so over them. I loved that we were dropped into it and it was revealed throughout, and I still felt connected to her
Your thoughts on Captain Marvel. AGREED!! You know I've felt the same way, but all I've been seeing is love for the film when we should require a better story for THE FIRST FEMALE MARVEL SUPERHERO!
Couldn’t have said it better! I’ve been so frustrated by only seeing people say how amazing it is. But it just wasn’t that for me at all which was so disappointing
I agree that Captain Marvel could have been better but I still REALLY enjoyed it. And I still liked it more than most Marvel solo movies. I don't like origin stories that much. I'd give it an A-
I just want to point out that when you review movies that I really loved, and have a different opinion that me, I always find myself nodding and going, "yeah I can see that" I never feel like it's anything irrational or over critical. And I really appreciate that.
I thought Carol’s love story was about the relationship between her friend (which I saw a bit of romance chemistry but not the point) and the new family she built in the Air Force. I’m kinda glad we didn’t get a romance. I like when stories show there are different ways to express and receive love. I didn’t see it as the writers trying to be different. There’s nothing bad about love stories, but sometimes they can feel forced and I think it would look forced if they gave Carol a love interest. She doesn’t seem like the type to have a “love at first fight” story. Lol! I think her love story would take a lot of time and development that a single film wouldn’t do justice. I agree it was at least a B+ and the story could use a bit more suspense but I overall liked what they did with it and I hope future movies give us more.
Marvel hinted about the possible same sex relationship but they didnt go full on as they want to sell their movie to every country. Rowan ellis has a great vid on this what should have been a clear relationship
Gen Allen I had a feeling that was the case which is disappointing. I think they would have done well if they went down that route and someone has to take the initiative with writing actual LGBT representation on screen. If it’s any company that can do it with minimal backlash, it’s Marvel. They did it for DP2 so I think their MCU franchise would do well.
@@loveandcupcakes100 sadly deadpool didnt need to worry about wider audiences like China so they felt they could go wild with violence, swearing and representation. The mcu is another case and they dont have many women, poc or any clear lgbt+ people.
Gen Allen interesting. I didn’t realize how difficult it was to get DP2 over in China. According to google, they had to do major edits to get the government to approve? 😶I don’t even know what to say about that. I can’t imagine what that kind of censorship is like.
I saw how to train your dragon in the thumbnail and just started crying. those movies mean the world to me and I'm so, so glad they were a part of my childhood.
I actually really liked Captain Marvel! I didn’t know anything about the movie before seeing it (I hadn’t seen any trailers or anything), and I felt like I learned a lot! It wasn’t my absolute favorite of the Marvel movies, but I still liked it!
Same!! I try to go to movies without knowing to much so that I don’t have high expectations cause that just leads to disappointment if it doesn’t meet your expectations. I enjoyed it so much, she is now in my Top 3 favourite superhero’s.
I haven't seen Captain Marvel yet but the way you describe it makes it seem like they tried so hard to make her an independent, strong woman that they really just made her not even remotely a well developed character and they're just saying that she's independent and strong.
OMG The How To Train Your Dragon movies are my favorite! I was crying at the end of the Hidden World. The story means the world to me and I grew up with it, so I'm so sad to see the story end. 10/10 for me!
I’ve just seen Captain Marvel like half an hour ago. I love it. And I can’t wait for Avengers Endgame. And I watched the Umbrella Academy in two days. It was just amazing and one of my favourite TV shows of all time. You should watch the TV show The Order on Netflix. I’m half way through it and it’s so good. It’s about a witches and werewolves.
i loved that carol didn't have a (heteromantic) love interest! her relationship with maria and her daughter was already so personal and so deep. not everyone needs romantic love. lol
Beautifully put when you were talking about how we don't know how she deals with people she loves when it comes to conflict. Establishing a character's motovation(s) is SO important.
Never been this early. Love your videos Chrstine, they are so creative! Omg I loved The umbrella academy it was really good but I was so pissed off when I finished and it was over and how it ended. Am I the only one who wasn't disappointed at all by Captain Marvel?
i actually thought this film was carol's origin story, but they did it through the flashbacks she was remembering. it was almost like we were learning her origin story with her, and i think that is what made it so amazing for me. we only know what carol knows, and then as it goes on (as she's in more films), we learn MORE about her WITH her. it's exciting and a different experience for the fans compared to other origin stories!
The captain marvel movie is literally a perfect representation of how she is in the books. She gets her powers by accident. She learns them by being trained. She’s also technically the second”captain marvel”, as carol used to be ms marvel along side of Captain Marvel who was a man. So her origin is sort of rushed in the comics as well.
Okay I am SO happy you share the same feelings about Captain Marvel that I do. It wasn't a bad movie, HOWEVER, I wanted to love this movie SO, SO much and I didn't and I was so sad that I didn't walk out of that movie theatre feeling so pumped to see her again in Endgame. I didn't mind Brie Larson, but there were so many things that they could have done with this character that they just didn't. I didn't feel emotionally attached to her, there wasn't a struggle, we didn't get to see her grow or anything. Her character was just kind of stagnant to me. I think Brie did a good job with what she was given, but the big things for me that didn't make me love this movie was 1.) Timing, 2.) Lack of vulnerability and relatability, and 3.) The plot. I think that, as important as her character is supposed to be in the MCU, she should have been introduced or at least hinted at a lot earlier. It's not enough to just have a female as a superhero and finally give her her own standalone movie and be like...okay. That's good enough. That'll be enough for people to feel empowered by this movie. I compare it to Black Panther. For me as a young African American woman, I was so happy with how great BP was. I feel like if the creators of Captain Marvel put as much care into their movie as Ryan Coogler and others that worked on BP, then Captain Marvel would have been AMAZING.
Captain Marvel made me cry, I just thought it was so empowering and I absolutely love her. I’m actually glad she didn’t have a love interest, but I love the story with her best friend
I freaking loved how to train your dragon 3 though they're my all time favorite movies. I started crying when hiccup gave him the tail. It was a perfect ending though! Like omg couldn't have asked for more! It was beautiful too! And omg Hiccup and Astrid! I don't want to spoil it for anyone but the end omg so perfect!
I'm really glad you gave out such a well thought out and honest opinion on Captain Marvel at the risk of being called a misogynist (yes it's crazy but so are some SJWs out there fanatically defending this film). Catwoman is a guilty pleasure for me. You forgot Elektra starring Jeniffer Garner. it wasn't too bad. Then there are movies like Red Sonja and the Alien movies i guess, but probably cant classify them as superhero movies. The Miseducation movie definitely looks great and i would love it i'm sure. but the story line is kinda upsetting so i'm holding off on watching it for now. will see it eventually though. Loved Umbrella Academy. Since you brought up Misfits, Robert Sheehan is in both. Love the guy. Can''t wait for season 2. Sex education trailer gave me the vibe that it's targetted at a much younger audience and i probably won't enjoy it as much. it's got rave reviews though. Definitely gonna watched How to train you dragons 3 soon. will rewatch the first two like you did for maximum oomph. i've heard it was amazing.
your analysis of captain marvel is so well thought out and true. It gave me more to think about because the main reason I was disappointed with the movie was how Marvel seems to have dug themselves into a hole with the Thanos situation, and can't rely on the Avengers' strength to get them out so they've brought in a random new character and given her little connections to satisfy the fandom and distract us from the fact that, she was in the comics, so they could've had these little connections in the movies since 2012! (such as Nick Fury looking at the pictures and calling it the Avengers Initiative)
I loved that she didn't have some classic origin story. I felt that this was kind of her origin, kind of her start. We saw how she came to be in some flashbacks (which I admit we could have used some more of) but overall, I feel like they portrayed her character well. We know her, but we didn't need to follow the typical trail of getting to know her.
I love SexEd! I need more! I agree with everything you said. I was so freakin' happy to see... and then... Dang it I can't say 'cause spoilers for anyone who plans to watch or is watching ... Another season can't come soon enough!
I'm from NZ so I grew up watching UK shows. My faves being Misfits, My Mad Fat Diaries and Skins. Sex Education reminded me of everything I loved about high school dramas. It was an A+ for me too. And if you haven't seen Broadchurch I highly recommend that show ❤
Sex Education is phenomenal!! I love the characters and storyline. But I also love how it doesn’t shy away from hard, controversial or taboo topics. And each character is very well developed. Each character has substance. I really need more.
I liked Captain Marvel, but I agree -- I definitely was expecting a little bit more from it! I also really enjoyed Umbrella Academy, and I'm excited for upcoming seasons!

Christine, did you finish the gilded wolves? If so what did you think? I finished it 2 months ago and I loved it. I also saw the hidden world with my cousins and I cried. Such a good animated trilogy. Great video!

I agree with everything you said about captain marvel, but hopefully they will actually develop her character in the future. Loved httyd and The Umbrella Academy they were both amazing ♡
Try watching Xena: Warrior Princess! It's about a female character that tries to turn her life around after a life of hate and murder. It takes place in times of ancient Greek when gods and monsters are very much real. It sounds kind of dark but it's not all the time! I promise! There's a lot of light hearted times and humor that you just end up falling for the characters! I hope you try it out. It's my favorite show!
I agree with you so much on your review of Sex Education! I didn't expect to love the show so much visually and character-arc wise. It's excellent! I also commented on last month's SIATM about how I loved it, I'm so happy you finally watched and enjoyed it
I agree that Captain Marvel could’ve been better, but personally the trailers didn’t hype me up so I didn’t really had such high expectations before watching it... so at the end, I was blown away by the film and I really liked it 😊. I don’t think it’s one of the best MCU movies but it was really good! 🙌🏻
SEX EDUCATION WAS WHERE IT IS AT! sometimes I felt like the humor was trying really hard but It was so good over all and omg I just want season 2. Had similar feelings about captain marvel. Hard time connecting to the lead because....like who is she? lol she was a blank slate and by the time she sorta knew who she was I was like...okayy.......hmph. It was a good movie but an origin film would have been GREAT to have before this one.
I adore Captain Marvel! And I'm completely in love with Carol😍 Hope there will be more solo movies just about her space adventures ~ I don't even need any other MCU characters. But I certainly want more Goose!!! 😻
Loved the video as always ❤ I watched The Order on Netflix and it reminded me of one of my all time fave series The Magicians but it wasn't as dark, and I really enjoyed it. It's literally secret organisation of magic people are based in a uni in america; adventure and a hella cute love story and friendship #goals ensue
I agree a 100% with Captain Marvel! I also think the plot was really confusing, and not like bad guy vs good guy like Marvel mostly does. Thought it would empower me like Wonder Woman, but it disappointed. Still a good movie dough.
I'd also give Captain Marvel a B! I think the whole memory/past issues made it hard to feel like this was a good introduction for her? I feel like I am more looking forward to *future* movies with her because we don't have to deal with that amnesia issue!! But aside from that I had no expectations so I thought it was fun hahaha But you spoke so much truth!
Favourite story I ate this month was The Blacklist, this show is so good, the first five seasons are on Netflix so check it out please. I also need to get on Captain Marvel.
I feel like we watched two very different movies because I 100% disagree that Captain Marvel wasn't an origin story. Between the snapshot pics of her, her memories or conversations with others, and her going through pilot school. It reminded me of Iron Man and Thor that way.
I kind of liked how they didn't have a love interest for her because I feel like a huge mistake that can happen in female protagonist stories is that they make the love interest take over the story. I was also mad that we didn't get the backstory tho. I wanted more of the airforce life and also I really didn't see any weaknesses which like... dope, but unrealistic and then how are you supposed to get any conflict with a character who can take out anyone with just a bit of blast. I don't know i'm conflicted about her
I liked it cpt. marvel and the way we saw her find herself. I didn’t really care either or not she had a love interest but I fr thought it was gonna be fury for some reason?? Idk but I really did wish that we saw more with her and her family.
I agree with you on Captain Marvel! If she had an origin story or another relationship, it could have been so much better. Wish Marvel would have done it like Wonder Woman. ❤️💛💙
I've heard that she didn't have a love intrest because there was romantic subtext between her and her best friend, I mean, they are literally raising a child together, but I can't confirm this is the case.
I was hoping for this during the movie, but the really didn't put much out there for us to feel a romantic connection between them other than the fact that Carol was part of their family. It was all an assumption rather than something we could be there for and feel.
I also watch the Captain Marvel it was good I thought not the best Marvel movie maybe but it was not bad. I also read the Grisha trilogy and I am soooo pumped about the TV show.😍
So close! For a second I thought it was my name in the book because you pronounced it in the way people pronounce my name when they do not know how to pronounce it. Then I googled it and it was a different spelling. It nearly gave me heart attack though when I heard you say that name though, I thought I misheard Emery or something.
Honestly i give Captain Marvel a C. Everything you said about the memory loss issues was right on the nose with what I was thinking, but also I just felt that the script was lacking?? Like they were trying so hard to make her snarky, and they even had Jude Law say like three times that she's a smart ass, but it just never came across because the way that she was written and the lines that she was given just didn't allow her to come across as such. The jokes fell flat for me-- Fury was honestly the highlight of the film. Also the fight scenes were lacklustre, the overall story didn't make a whole lot of sense to me because I felt as if things weren't properly fleshed out. And I know it's the first MCU female superhero, but did they have to keep making comments about it in the film? I feel like it's enough just to have a female superhero film, and there's no real need to keep making little corny comments in the film to keep hitting the nail on the head. It took me out of the narrative and cheapened the overall film because it felt as if they just kept saying "hey! Look at us! DC isn't the only franchise that cares about equality!"
Many people from the LGBT community were upset about captain marvel cause there can be found a lot of evidence that Carol and Marie were a couple but nothing happened! Like if a man returned to a woman and a child (that he helped raise) you would assume they were a couple. For a better explanation there already videos on UA-cam talking about this
i think captain marvel doesn't need to have a love interest, she shows love and companionship and all that with her best friend

I agree with everything you said about captain marvel, but hopefully they will actually develop her character in the future. Loved httyd and The Umbrella Academy they were both amazing ♡
All of my favorite...everything’s! Are in this!!
YAY!
First time I’m this early!! I just pre ordered again but better and I’m SO excited!!💗💗
ah thank you!!
You have some great points about Captain Marvel and I totally agree!
Will you be going on a book tour when your book is released?
I JUST REALIZED YOU TALKED ABOUT MY BOOK IN THIS I'M A BAD VIEWER WOW
I totally agree with all your points on Captain Marvel!
I watched the first season of Lucifer during February. Very interesting show. I recommend. I’m in season two
SEX EDUCATION WAS WHERE IT IS AT! sometimes I felt like the humor was trying really hard but It was so good over all and omg I just want season 2.
Had similar feelings about captain marvel. Hard time connecting to the lead because....like who is she? lol she was a blank slate and by the time she sorta knew who she was I was like...okayy.......hmph. It was a good movie but an origin film would have been GREAT to have before this one.
OMG I loved Dragons too! I cryed...
I just got Two Can Keep a Secret way before seeing this video. I loved One of Us is Lying!
marvel and umbrella academy oWn Me
Gosh I really need to watch Captain Marvel soon!
I haven’t watched Captain Marvel or How to Train Your Dragon yet. I need to watch them ASAP.
I really liked Sex education!
Also, what is your opinion on shadowhunters 3b?
I've been waiting for this video! Thanks for the review :)
I adore Captain Marvel! And I'm completely in love with Carol😍 Hope there will be more solo movies just about her space adventures ~ I don't even need any other MCU characters. But I certainly want more Goose!!! 😻
Loved the video as always ❤
I watched The Order on Netflix and it reminded me of one of my all time fave series The Magicians but it wasn't as dark, and I really enjoyed it.
So Early! Love your videos Christine❤
I'd also give Captain Marvel a B! I think the whole memory/past issues made it hard to feel like this was a good introduction for her? I feel like I am more looking forward to *future* movies with her because we don't have to deal with that amnesia issue!! But aside from that I had no expectations so I thought it was fun hahaha
But you spoke so much truth!
Idk but I really did wish that we saw more with her and her family.
you just gonna ignore the elektra movie exists I see
OKAY, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE SONG IS, I'VE BEEN WONDERING FOR SO LONG
I agree with you on Captain Marvel!
I also read the Grisha trilogy and I am soooo pumped about the TV show.😍
Well at least we still have a wonderful Wonder Woman movie😓
SEX EDUCATION IS SO FLIPPING GOOD!! AND UMBRELLA ACADEMY WAS SO DAMN FINE
Have you watched One Day at a Time bc you really should 😁🥰
Dharma Beeharilal omg I agree soo much. I walked out of the theater disappointing and bored...
Many people from the LGBT community were upset about captain marvel cause there can be found a lot of evidence that Carol and Marie were a couple but nothing happened! Like if a man returned to a woman and a child (that he helped raise) you would assume they were a couple. For a better explanation there already videos on UA-cam talking about this
I had the same thought about them, but then there were no hints to a romance!
So Exited to read Two Can Keep A Secret! I read One Of Us Is Lying and LOVED it!
Watch Lucifer on Netflix
JUST PRE ORDERED THE BOOK!!!!!!!
