Same here. Dad's a Johnny Cash fan, so I'm sure I heard this song growing up but didn't remember it. As for "shot a man in Reno just to watch him die", I heard that line on an episode of Wings. Someone was after Fay, and Brian and Joe were pretending to be her two, big, strapping, dangerous boys. I think it was Joe who then said "I once shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die"--I thought that was an original line in the script. I was wrong.

I worked at Goodwill years ago, and the management would let us dress up in costumes to advertise things we sold during the Halloween season. One day a coworker and myself were both wearing the same costume, the old black and white striped convict outfit. A customer we were helping asked me what we did to get thrown in jail, and the sarcastic comment popped out of my mouth before I really thought about it. I told him, "Well, she (my coworker) said we were going to make a run to the bank. She didn't tell me we were going to rob it." It made both the customer and my coworker laugh.

If you're up for a tear-jerker, I think the circumstances around the video are important. Johnny Cash has a long history of drug abuse (the "needle" reference in the song is true) and infidelity. He wasn't a role model by any means. He destroyed a lot of relationships with people who cared about him. Earlier in the year, before the video was shot, his friend, bandmate and former roommate Waylon Jennings died. They filmed this on location at the Cash house/museum and his wife came downstairs while they were filming so they left her in the video (June was also a country star even before she married him) . She died about 3 months after the video was released and Johnny died a few months after that. The house/museum burned down in 2007. He was in failing health when this was filmed and knew he wasn't going to be around much longer. This was his goodbye. The very end shot reminds me of closing a casket.
