    Aquael Minikani 120 (Amazon): geni.us/ZQohH
This is a non-standard type of canister filter as the pump is not integrated into the top of the canister. Instead it goes 'in-line' on the inlet or outlet pipe allowing all the available space in the relatively small canister to be used for foams and media. At a maximum it will take 3kg of Biogravel in the top 3 trays or 2kg biohome ultimate allowing for a coarse pad to go at the top of the top tray to prevent media entering the outlet pipe (if the filter is knocked over).
There aren't many of these filters around but if you are looking for something ready-made to be the perfect 'nitrate filter' (with the addition of an in-line tap / valve to reduce flow) then this would be a great choice as explained toward the end of the video.

    WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
*If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on*
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
Avoid using any products which claim to remove, detoxify or bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they will have a noticeable starving effect on the bacteria which will manifest as an inability to achieve a full cycle due to a low population of bacteria on a starvation diet.
Let Nature do the work and as long as you have a suitable sized, well set up filter there is no reason why a full cycle won't be achieved.
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that the recommendations are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

Good morning Richard. I am the one who should thank you for this great opportunity, to have my filter reviewed and set up by a specialist. Much appreciated. The filter is working perfectly, had no problems with it. The only issues I have with it, just like somebody else put in a comment is that water does come out when I remove the lid (solved by placing the filter in a plastic container) and the occasional vibration whenever the pump touches something else (like the table leg). I also had a problem when I did set it up first time, I did put the pump on the return of the filter but I struggled to prime the pump again after cleaning so now I have it on the inlet, pushing water in the filter. Thanks again
PS: As for Game of Thrones, maybe I will give it a try if they do a sequel :)) ; funny enough, you are the second person to mention it when hearing my name

I thought water might leak out when lifting the lid have you tried the pump in the aquarium ? I would have bought one of these but literally on the 2nd of Feb I bought a Tetra ex 800 I've almost finished pimping it. I can't wait to see how pondguru pimps the Tetra ex 800 and his thoughts on it as well as the amount of media he can fit in it for when I slowly replace my Fluval Biomax with biohome ultimate or Ulta mini.

Great to see you posting videos again! I always set up my filters based on what you teach.
Just had a thought about why the media supplied in this filter is put in upside down by the manufacturer - the bio media is much heavier than the sponges and floss so if they put it in correctly as you suggest, the package might be too top heavy for storage and stacking in large numbers ie a big stack of them might be prone to collapsing. They should tell you how to do arrange the media in the instructions though, which I bet they don’t.
    Just my tuppence worth 😊

If you place the pump on the inlet tube won't it push through the media instead of pull? I thought that was bad? Are there one way valves on the inlet/outlet connectors or could you switch direction so that it filters down and you can put the sponges on top?

  • @royeyk

Notice you didn't speak about much more than the pumps flow rate. You might want to see how warm the pumps get while operating. I had a couple similar filters and the pumps got pretty hot and died within six months. Those pumps look like a similar design. There are several brands of external water pumps that provide a variety of flow rates, better cooling and are less expensive than replacing a canister filter.

I am in the process of moving the whole lot to the other side of the pond which may seem crazy........ but....it was in the wrong place.
All the drains from the filters will be piped down into new vegetable gardens which will be watered simply by lifting a slide valve and draining the nutritious stuff from the filters directly into the beds. Some beds are quite near the filters but others are about 80yds away so plenty of pipe is needed. The house and pond pump(s) will be powered by a new 12kW solar system (with 12.4kW batteries) which should be in by early March but I need to finish digging the final 20 ton or so out for the base by hand and also dig a long path to link the two veg gardens by hand too - weather has been against me on that one.
The filters will also feed a large greenhouse which will be fed from the filters and powered by the solar system so I can grow lettuce, peppers, tomatoes etc. all year.
Most of the filters will be to grow plants in them as the idea is that the roots will support invertebrates which will then was down into the pond to feed the fish in a sort of permaculture set up - it's quite the project and I saved up for it by early 2020 but the covid nonsense coupled with the business going crazy busy delayed things significantly. When it's all in it will be class and I'll be making videos on organic gardening, self sufficiency and cooking for my other channel (Thousand Yard Stare) as those subjects will be increasingly important in the near future. I'm still trying to edit all the filter videos shot over the last 18 months and I hope to be through them by the time the nights get lighter.
I hope you're keeping well during this time when the World is upside down.
