What's heartbreaking is that little Thomas Gibson at the very end was beaten to death by his own father who tried to cover it up. Several of the kids in this video turned up murdered.

The song is about the lead singer having depression. As bad as the video might seem but it helped bring 26 missing people back home.

Thanks for giving attention to Soul Asylum. The song came first, then the idea for the attempted rescue of runaways, from all walks of life. The Milk carton idea was working from the everyday familiar to the universal caring for the ones we love as stronger than accepting tragedy without a fight.

True. I discovered them back in the 80s when they where still more (post-)punk. "Hang Time" is probably my favourite album. Was a pretty big surprise when they suddenly appeared on MTV and got real big all of a sudden. But well deserved.

And with that one sentence you have instantly nailed the appeal of 90s alternative rock!

I remember reading somewhere that the band was not aware that they would include the missing persons in the video, since the song is about depression and had nothing to do with actual runaways. However i think the video helped find a few of them? I am sure i remember that one of the girls confronted the band after a concert saying they ruined her life since her family life was pretty bad and that's why she escaped.

This song and this video are so much more than skin deep. Those of us that were watching in the 90s will never forget the words and images in this. Never before did an artist use the MTV platform for so much. Thank you for reminding the world we STILL have so many missing people. Mental health issues are not new. Just constantly over looked.

Great Song with an even more powerful video message Saw Soul Asylum in Concert. One of the Loudest concerts I’ve ever heard and they were Phenomenal Live

Soul Asylum, Replacements, Husker Du, Prince, Morris Day and The Time, Lipps Inc, Flamin Ohs, Jayhawks, Semisonic, The Suburbs- all from Minneapolis area, ca. 1980-1995.
A once truly great city with a huge music and art scene.

Soul Asylum is from Minnesota, formed in the 80's by Dave Pirner (vocals & guitar) and were part of the American 'alternative rock' scene... which included various indie bands like R.E.M. (from Georgia)... Stone Temple Pilots (from San Diego, California)... Soundgarden (from Seattle, Washington)
The band had little commercial success, debuting in 1984, before the alternative rock scene exploded in popularity in the early 90's... Soul Asylum was 1 of a number of alternative rock bands signed to major labels and released the album 'Grave dancers union' in 1992... the single 'Runaway train' was a huge hit by 1993 w/ a video made to focus of runaway kids and child abduction... the album sold 2x platinum in the US w/ the singles - 'Black gold' ... 'Somebody to shove'...
Their next album 'Let your dim light shine' was released in 1995 and sold platinum w/ the hit single 'Misery'.
However, Soul Asylum's commercial appeal diminished as the 90's closed out... their 1998 album 'Candy from a stranger'... was a commercial disappointment.
Soul Asylum returned in 2006 w/ the album 'The silver lining'... They have continued to record and tour consistently.

Before you even watch it.... the song ISNT about missing children, its more about a metaphor for spiralling depression and the loss of control.
Yes the video may feature missing kids and that's the message of the video, but not the song

As stated, it's about the singer's depression. But there was also a epidemic of runaway children in the early 90s(I was one of those runaways). The video was made to show parallels between depression and running away. It worked, it helped reunite dozens of families with their missing children

This is one of my top 10 favourite songs. The juxtaposition between the deep dark lyrics and the happy jangly music, and then both held up against a hugely powerful video. Brilliant.
Also as previously noted, some of the missing people were found and reunited with their loved ones. This wasn't always positive though, it's been suggested that some went back to difficult situations. They did update the names periodically, so the names would date the video quite well.

Loved this video and your reaction!
Interestingly, there are several variations of this video, with the pictures of real missing children being different depending on location. There were three variations shown in America, one in the UK, two in Australia, and (I think) one in Germany. There’s also an extended version that starts with Dave Pirner, the lead singer of Soul Asylum, showing a rather unsettling drawing made by a young girl who had run away from home 110 times. At the end of the video, Pirner comes back on and says, “if you’ve seen one of these kids, or you are one, please call this number”, and then the video shows the phone number for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The extended version was hardly ever played on TV, though.

If you want tips on two very good, but at the same time very sad, songs I want to recommend Suzanne Vega's song "Luka" and the song "In the living years" by Mike + The Mechanics. Both are very deep songs and you really have to listen to the lyrics to understand them but they are so worth listening to.

Great song. Great reaction. Give it up to soul asylum. The world didn't necessarily need another music video showcasing the artist song. The world did need that however. It actually resulted in several families reuniting with love ones they thought they had lost.

Before starting the review of this video I wanted to make an observation Inna, I liked your reaction yesterday, I liked it, I didn't like the music and I believe the public didn't like it very much either and what this represents is the low number of views. , but of course I say this based on what I saw yesterday, but it may have changed, you'll know! Now about today's react, it's an excellent song, it's more melodic rock and I really liked the lyrics presented which talk about an increasingly common problem in society: depression! The curious thing is that David took a year to finish the song and only managed to finish it when he himself had a bad time! Now talking about your reaction Inna I have to say the following: Your excitement in the react videos is contagious Inna and those blue eyes of yours highlight even more the beauty that you have as a woman, keep up the work you are doing and if I can recommend a song to you I would recommend the song Hero by the band Skillet, it's a good song and I think you'll like it and that's all, keep up the work you're doing and Brazilian greetings to you, clear eyes! 💚💛💚💛

Some of the kids featured in multiple versions of this video weren't runaways and it turns out were murdered. One girl in the American version #1 was murdered by her mother and buried in her backyard. Two others were killed and not found until 2007 in an abandoned home's backyard. In another situation a girl who was a runaway actually met the band later on and told the guitarist that the video ruined her life. As it turns out it was the only way she could stay out of a bad situation at home. In that time (early 90's) kids were not believed as much as they are now when it came to parental abuse and danger at home.

If you like Soul Asylum, you will REALLY appreciate the band whose sound they stole and turned into soft, commercialised mush. That band is the Replacements, and they are the greatest band no one’s ever reacted to. Songs to check out: “Hold My Life”, “Colour Me Impressed”, ‘“Unsatisfied”, “Alex Chilton”, “If Only You Were Lonely”.
