  • On our trip to New Zealand and Weta Workshop, Adam Savage visits the miniatures stage for Thunderbirds are Go, a television series featuring incredible handcrafted "bigature" sets. We get up close to the intricate and detailed models to learn how these scaled environments were designed, fabricated, and then used for filming.
Thanks to Weta Workshop, ITV Studios, and Pukeko Pictures

I think it’s brilliant that the new thunderbird series still retained the use of practical models

I don't have a problem with cg, it's amazing, but there's just something so cool about miniatures. It's great that some projects are still using them.

Keith Fulkerson My thoughts exactly. CGI more than has its place, and I'll always defend that. But practical effects and real model sets are really amazing and I always love seeing them used.

There's something about the lighting and the verisimilitude that they haven't quite uniformly mastered with CG yet.
Sometimes a CG model can look and feel hollow.
Of course that varies between studios and animators, but it can be hard to replicate how light would react and cast shadows in a CG environment.

I really like when different techniques are used alongside each other so that at any given time, it's not clear whether it's CG, practical, or some combination. If done well, a filmmaker is then not limited by any one technique.

A few years ago I might've agreed but by now CGI is at a point where most people won't even notice that it's there (as long as enough money is put into it), but I too think that miniatures and models should still be a thing, it'll definitely help cast and crew to get a better feeling for the scenario and some sense of immersion that'll probably improve the quality of the production.

I went to Slough, UK when I was a kid. Luckily went around where they made some of the Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 stuff. It was the Stingray bits that fascinated me then. The underwater sequences were filmed looking through a fish tank.
My brother fell into the pit where they did the snow scenes...
    Just some memories.

Both the old and the new show are kid friendly (the new one even more so, with fewer violence), but I would say they're quite enjoyable also as an adult. Although, I might be biased because I grew up watching the old series on DVD (my dad watched them on tv as a kid), but still. I think having (most of) the scenery as a miniature / bigature really helps.

lol. i've been in CGI since the 80's, i used to date a hand animation chick though and we would always have heated arguments (she's latin) about which was "best", the funny thing is now, 30 years on, she has more computer kit than i do. (her claim to fame was backgrounds for coco pops commercials, but we have both done tv and features, as well as commercials, i've done a top pf the pops for instance, and i did lots of effects for the bill paxton thunderbirds movie).

Diamond Gaming well I'm still in the design phase I know I'm going to be using foam blocks and paper mache (can't spell XD) for the environmental parts going to building it like it inside an asteroid then I'm going to be using these pre built miniatures for some of the details I'm also using some brass pipes for well pipes I'm also using paper boards for the hanger doors but no I do not have an instagram sorry

Some behind the scenes with the builders making stuff would be fantastic. There stuff is a work of art and a great tribute to the original series.

That was amazing and I live not far from there, well 1600 Klms away in Sydney but I off to see that. Thanks Adam for showing this in my own backyard.

I love how the base of The Hood's ship is a (fairly recognizable) Dyson vacuum. A wonderful homage to the lemon squeezer in the original TB1 launch bay.

I was just going about my daily business one morning when I got a fab life imitating art bolt of lightning.
There ahead of me on the tube platform was The Hood! Shiny bald pate, shifty looks, even similar garb.
For once in my life I actually managed to get the phone camera up and at 'em and fired off a couple of gooduns without the evil git noticing.
To top it all off, I sent them to the kids phones as they were en route to school. Reports of loud gasps did I get that eve.
Pity the seven year old because his age is all about blurring fact and fiction and now his mum's cross with me because evil has instantly become real and really close so he gets no sleep.
Character building we used to be able to say.

I did this tour the week before Christmas. It's expensive for what you get, but nothing's quite like seeing this sort of work in person, for real, up close. Can't touch (naturally, they don't want the hordes breaking stuff) and no photos (so no selfies with Tracy Island). But to see those models in person and just see the detail that went in. People's souls went into this.
Also fun to realize they are building these out of just random stuff. One of the sets I recognized standard electrical conduit and fittings, others had plumbing parts, bits of kitchen utensils. On their own they are just boring mundane everyday items. They turn them into these amazing models. It's certainly way more than the sum of its parts.
If you visit New Zealand and Wellington, do it. Both the tours Weta run. (They take you through the main model shop too.) Even easy to get to by bus from Central Wellington, you don't need to hire a car or take a taxi.

First: I loved the original Thunderbirds... and I will check the new ones... Second: Even if it is not movie related, I would love to see Adam visiting and checking out the "Miniatur Wunderland" (MiWuLa) in Hamburg, Germany...

I studies model making at Medway College of Art and Design 35 years ago and one of my lecturers was Mr John Wylie whom was a model maker on the original Thunderbirds series and his house was full of old props from the series.
