- George Galloway has won the Rochdale by-election after one of the most divisive campaigns in years.
The Workers Party for Britain leader gained almost 40 per cent of the vote and had a 5,697 majority over his closest rival, David Tully - an independent candidate who only decided to run the day before nominations closed.
Labour withdrew support for its candidate, Azhar Ali, after a recording emerged in which he claimed Israel was complicit in the terrorist attacks of October 7.
The by-election was to decide the replacement for the veteran Labour MP Sir Tony Lloyd, who died in January.

Labour should be really worried about this result, especially in the north of England. Galloway not only won the muslim vote but sections of the non Muslim Labour base. He definitely won the youth vote as well. Also another independent won 2nd place and he only entered the race 4 weeks ago. Labour have a serious problem. They have lost the youth vote and a connection to their base. Their 20% poll lead is built on quicksand and even Peter mandelson thinks Labour's lead is overrated

I don’t think he got many if any non Muslim votes. It’s clear Muslim turnout was near 100%, especially by postal ballot which increased from 11k last election to over 25k here despite overall turnout (the general public) being amongst the lowest there has been. Clearly entire Muslim families and the whole community has delivered a near 100% turnout, and the non Muslim community has voted at low levels and not been as engaged. I don’t see how any white working class people would vote for him for example, particularly as Rochdale was the centre of the Pakistani Muslim grooming scandal, and also as he’s known to be a raging antisemite restricting his mass appeal only to far left anti semites, and of course, Muslims.

@@Jojohumf we actually need proportional representation now neither of the two main parties are political broad churches anymore. Both the conservatives and Labour have moved to the right and in the case of Labour a purge has been taking place that has largely gone unreported. Even yesterday they suspended 4 Labour councillors for voting for a ceasefire in Gaza even though it is supposedly party policy now.

The average voter should be concerned by this. Elections in this country should not be influenced by religious and sectarian disputes in the Middle East. This result just feeds Islamophobia and anti- semitism.
The reason I would vote for an independent or small party (I am not a Muslim) is that allowing and supporting the trashing of international humanitarian law anywhere in the world, and to anyone in the world, does not bode well for British people. If Starmer and Sunak can breach humanitarian law so casually, why would we suppose treatment of British citizens would be any different if we stood in the way of politicians enriching themselves? So my reason would not be related to religion, but rather my worry about undermining international law.

However a vote in a by election in Rochdale, Lancashire is going to have absolutely zero effect on the bombing in Gaza. If the outrage of POTUS can achieve nothing then no amount of protestations by our government will stop the killing. This result will have only added to Islamophobia and anti semitism.
