1:09:00 I find it actually beautiful that Marco feels the emotion in this song while fighting the Gutterman and literally gets the whole character and its role in the grand scheme of things just by Hakita's expert-level music design. The Gutterman literally doesn't want to do this anymore, at least the guy inside of him doesn't. It just mindlessly autopilots and shoots at you because that's what it was programmed to do, while the guy in the back is used a battery and kept in eternal agony until you finally put him down. He's quite possibly one of the only enemies in this game that would be doing them a service to kill.
@@a_businessman mhm! Minor spoiler for an easter egg/lore secret: Incase anyone missed it, there's a hidden poem written by a gutterman, thanking its "battery" and calling the person its "mother". It fights so that it can find another blood source to power itself, and then frees it's mother by unhooking them and finally killing them. Very moving poem. I know I shittily summarized it but y'all should find it in 7-2 and read it yourselves if you haven't

@@paron_YTThe prime sanctums are a pretty sizeable increase in difficulty compared to the rest of the game-even on harmless. The suffering is definitely still there (especially on P-2...) After all, they were intended for people who were able to P-rank every level prior; regardless of difficulty.
People also tend to skip the Minotaur entry cause of the single line of text trick smh Also wow he missed 2 (not counting Minotaur, though I should) unlocked terminal entries I believe
In the second fight against Gabriel, he is full of "perfect hatred" because he lost to you the first time. Upon returning to the council after the first fight, he was essentially re-indoctrinated into thinking his divine power (God's Light) is impossible to defeat, and he squandered it against you in the first fight. He doesn't understand how he lost against a mere object. He's frustrated. During the first half of the second fight, Gabriel is screaming insults along the lines of "I can't believe I lost to you" However, during the second half he starts to enjoy the fight. He realizes that "God's Light" can be defeated, and you are capable of doing so. The entire doctrine he believed in has been broken, and after the fight he takes some time to understand what that means for him. Then he does something drastic.
i really like how you can vision how the music mixes with the gameplay. for me, i just sort of go along with it and it subconsciously effects how i play but for you its really nice to see how you can pick apart how it progresses and effects the player. love your content
I want you to know that you're the reason I got into Ultrakill in the first place! A while ago you released a video covering the Death of God's Will and it had me so interested that I had to check out the rest of it. Thank you for introducing me to one of my favorite games of all time, even if you didn't play it back then!
I love the lore Hakita has created for this game. One of my favorites is the lore entry regarding the GUTTERMAN. In case you want to learn about it for yourself I won't spoil the log about them except for one part; the GUTTERMAN is what inspired Hell itself to create the mannequins

37:43 It makes sense because the machines aren't evil, they were built to kill and then they never got a command saying "Stop". So as far as they know, the war is still going, and they need fuel.
Thing is, they did stop, when the war ended. Humanitys death came all of a sudden that almost drowned the ferryman in Wrath, but before that humanity thrived enough to build the “elevators” in hell, along with the terminals, so the machines did stop at some point after the war. But someone, _some thing_ told them to start killing again. And so they did.

For future reference, Marco, a big part of non-success is your lack of healing. Especially with Gabriel. Every time he talks he refuses to attack, so it’s a really good time to get some cheap close shots in and heal up.
Who wants more Lore from Dante's Inferno? The Sixth Layer of Heresy is within the City of Dis, which resembles fiery red Mosques. Heretics, who speak against the word of God are punished here, trapped in flaming tombs. Not much to say about Ultrakill here, it was very Red. The Seventh Layer, Violence is guarded by the Minotaur. It is then divided into three rings. The First Ring, representing Violence against Neighbors/Others, is for Murderers, War-makers, Plunderers, Tyrants, etc. They are immersed in Phlegethon, a river of boiling blood and fire, while Centaurs patrol and fire arrows at anyone who emerged out of the river higher than they are allowed. The Second Ring, representing Violence against Self, is for those who attempted to take their own lives. They are transformed into gnarled, thorny trees, fed upon by harpies. They are unable to move, and yet feel pain when they are damaged. Unique among the dead, these souls will not be corporeally resurrected after The Final Judgement. The Third Ring, representing Violence against God, Art and Nature. The great plane of Burning Sand, scorched by great flakes of flame slowly falling from they sky. The Blasphemers, Sodomites and Usurers (Violent against God, Nature and Art respectively) are faced with this unbearing desert for eternity. Encountering this layer in Ultrakill is what got me looking into Dante's Inferno. You can clearly feel the three rings of Violence in the game, Violence against Others, Self, then God/Nature. The Minotaur is the guardian of the Labrynth in the Garden of Forked Paths. You missed the final words in the book there: "The World is your Canvas ... So pick up your Brush ... And Paint ... The World ... RED" The Phlegethon takes to the side in Light up the Night, instead focusing on perpetual war between the machines. In No Sound, No Memory, the enemies can be seen fighting each other amidst the forest of gnarled trees. And you take on the 1000-THR in Like Antennas to Heaven. The Pinnacle of the Great War that scorched the Earth, and the machine you were seemingly designed to defeat. If you pay close attention, you can see another 1000-THR off in the distance engaged in combat with the one you are infiltrating. They periodically fire colossal bolts of electrical energy between each other, blocking them with some form of energy shielding.
"ehmm akschually the minotaur got banished to the garden of forking paths after minos got terrified when your mother ("your mother" fits in the blank spaces) sculpted it and presented it to minos and minos got terrified because it represented his mistakes 🤓"
hakita openly said that he would've liked to have put a city backdrop in heresy but he was pressed for time and also thought it ruined the vibe of the music and moment.
I like the part when you enter this long dark corridor in 7-3 and end up in a place where there are already battles going on between different fractions of hell, like different models of machines, types of demons and angels etc., and how it creates the picture of slowly dying world
Another great playthrough! Loved it from the first second. In case you still want more Ultrakill, there's more levels such as the secret missions (requiring some exploration and puzzle-solving... sometimes literally) and Prime Sanctums (that require a P-rank on every level). If you're not up for playing them, there's plenty of videos out there of others doing it themselves. Fraud and Treachery are coming soon, hopefully this year, so it is not the end. I hope to see your playthrough of them too, and thanks for playing!
If it comes to the release of Fraud and Treachery, I'd say: I'd wait another year, maybe next august or july to let hakita and the team perfectly flesh out all ideas and stuff regarding the last 2 layers, the new alt weapon, all the secret missions, the last prime sanctum, and last but not least, the new difficulties, and I'll be waiting, looking forward how gloriously they close this early access game to a full fleshed out game, which made a huge name itself among the indie titles.
fun fact! if you read the lore behind the earthmover you will see that it is hinted at that v1 (the robot you play as) was specifically designed to counter the earthmovers! i love the little lore tidbits this game has. glad to see you enjoying ultrakill :)
You should really check out the secret missions in this game! They added such a charming aspect to the game that really made me fall in love with the game on my first playthrough. The puzzles are super rewarding to solve and there's only really one "combat" secret level so they're not a challenge/hassle or annoying to complete at all in terms of combat because the only time you have to deal with that is when you're finding the secret mission entrance. A lot of the most memorable moments in the game happen during these missions and I think it could be super fun to see you check them out! (or you could do so in your own time of course in case you don't want to publish that experience) ♥
I honestly don't think Gabriel is particularly evil here. If you read the lore you can see he shows mercy to several of the damned like the ferryman and now that god has vanished he is forced to be a punisher of the wicked, something he most probably hates doing but does it anyway out of duty but no doubt feels a lot of doubt and guilt for the torment that is being put upon the suffering. Then the machine enters and for the first time in his existence he is actually challenged and defeated. Which forces him to stop and take a look at himself and his place in the world which initially brings anger but then gratitude. Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk!!
Honestly, I'm not sure he's forced to be a punisher of the wicked, but is instead ignorant of the damage that he's causing. Fundamentally, Gabriel believed that his purging and murder was the will of God, the being he worships, and as such, he obeyed without questioning. It's not evil, just ignorance driven by religious manipulation.
dude the act 2 interlude still gives me chills to this day the entire cutscene is deadass 3 images, and yet it's one of the best cutscenes I've ever seen
1:32:36 dont know if you noticed, but from this point forward all enemies in the level are infighting and target each other (although, they will begin to target exclusively you if you get too close or attack them)
27:50 His wrong was failing to kill V1 33:something Gabriel is pissed because he lost to a mere machine, "not even mortal" just a piece of metal. He, a mighty archangel, the rightous hand of the father. Also i think the song Gabriel plays is a Bach song? Im not sure though ///VIOLENCE/// 51:31 (?) You can scroll down on the Minotaur entry
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A WHILE FOR THIS IM ACTUALLY EXCITED FOR THE VIOLENCE LAYER!!! Edit: THE MANNEQUIN JUMPSCARE also the fact that Marco easily learned how to parry the mannequins point blank made me fliplol
"How many had he killed? Had he ever thought to count? How much cruelty did he embody... and to what end? How many did he condemn to hell and who did it benefit..?" I find this introspection by Gabriel so interesting because he could be talking about V1 (you), but he could just as easily be talking about himself or even God. All three had shown cruelty, and all killed others in vain. Sentencing to hell or just assisting? The fact that Gabriel never mentions V1 as a he, but only as a machine or a thing supports this heavily.
If you look in the controls there's an area to change your arm punches to be different buttons entirely so you can instantly punch with whatever arm you want instead of one button making you swap arms and you have to remember which one you're on, just in case you'd prefer that since the single button swapping can feel awkward at times.
to correct something you said in 28:55, at the beginning when he’s enraged he’s desperate to win but as he calms down and the room becomes filled with light he starts getting into it, into the fight, he’s having fun
Hey Marco! Just a bit of a recommendation for your ULTRAKILL journey: Swapping weapons and their variations frequently will boost your style points and help you learn all sorts of stylish synergies. For example, shooting an enemy with lots of nails embedded in them with the railcannon will cause all the nails to explode!
Just opened the video, wanna say before it starts that I am SO excited to see his reactions, ESPECIALLY Violence layer. I commented on the last video and I've been waiting for this! Excited to see what happens, reactions, etc. I'll edit this with my thoughts at the end :D 7-1 EDITS: 48:32 was worth EVERY second of the wait lol. 49:38, the blood on white is actually exactly what Hakita was going for when he made the Violence Layer predominantly white! 1:05:25 Bull of Hell (The Minotaur's theme) actually has an Aztec Death Whistle played by Mandalore Herrington (MandaloreGaming) that you can hear here! 1:05:45 BEAUTIFUL foreshadowing, literally perfect lol. 7-2 EDITS: 1:08:07 Scroll down :). 1:09:03 Surprisingly accurate guess on the Gutterman, lore, just a bit off with who specifically is being forced to do something they don't wanna do. 1:09:41 I love seeing people's genuine reactions to moments like this. You've been conditioned to think that the Violence Layer is all going to be similar to 7-1, and even walking into 7-2 you still have that same sense, until those doors open and everything changes. You've just been in the Labyrinth at the edge of the Violence layer, now you're in the actual layer and you're immediately thrown into a completely different, unsettling environment. Amazing work by Hakita, and I love Marco's genuine reactions to moments like this. Watching him do the level outside of the intended order was fun. 7-3 EDITS: He forgot the Gutterman terminal entry, but 1:28:58 tree jumpscare.1:35:15 This scared me lol, I hate mannequins! A little sad he didn't realized exactly what's happening in the big arena rooms. 7-4 EDITS: 1:38:16 The reaction to the reveal of the Earthmover is great, what I was hoping for! 1:42:53 Struggling to remember Maurice's name was really funny. Marco just tanking the flush pool because he's on harmless was hilarious! 1:50:20 the last second escape reaction was amazing, you can see the shock on his face, like "Oh, I was almost there when it exploded."
To elaborate on the crosses in 7-1, they actually don't have the same meaning as they do in typical Christianity. Basically, they're just meant to be a very crude depiction of a tree, specifically the tree of life. Hakita and the dev team didn't want crosses in at first, but then realized Gabriel has a huge one on his head, so they had to come up with a meaning for it
@@addison_v_ertisement1678 Ultrakill, while somewhat based on Dante's inferno, isn't really christian lorewise. No mention of Jesus is made, and all parallels to actual Abrahamic faiths are old testament related, and even then they aren't often specific references to abrahamic theology. Christian cosses wouldn't really make sense in ultrakill's hell, as the context of Jesus' crucifixation isn't relevent to the ingame kingdom of heaven.
I just realized something The reason why 6-1's title is "Cry for the Weeper" and why its theme sounds sad is because of the people who got ended up in the layer Human souls started to fill Hell full and among those souls gets scorched in Heresy. Some, if not, many of those people who got in that layer were morally righteous and faithful people who were following the wrong belief, aka going pagan. That one part in the theme really sounds like its crying, as if the people who believed so hard in their moral belief are bawling because of the unfair suffereing they got in the end even though they have been kind and good back in Earth. Pair it with the droning music from the start, as Marco said, it's oppressing, like it's silencing the "sinners" of their despair of their situation, taking no heed of their thoughts and regrets. They once sought salvation, but the only way now is death
another lovely Ultrakill video... thank you so much for playing more of it!! this has been such a fun "series" to watch - as a "classical music enjoyer" (though, admittedly, i don't know much about the specifics of classical music in general, i must admit...) but especially as an Ultrakill player, this was so damn fun to see. i don't care at all that you chose to play on Harmless difficulty - it's there for a reason! your insights about the music, where it comes from, and what it makes you think about and *feel* - THAT'S what i'm really here for. anything else is secondary! this was a wonderful video, and i'm very glad you've continued to enjoy your experience with this beautifully bloody game. here's hoping layers 8 and 9 live up to this level of polish!
Love how we absolutely does 7 1 without any confusion of skulls and tunnels (which took me and my friend about 20-30 minutes roaming around like mad men because we cant grapple them from the doors they activate. And how he gets absolutely gets confused in 7-2 which is supposed to be a straightforward level with the payload there
eh, it's a lot of effort for just two levels. I'd rather he approaches it in a way in which he's comfortable. If he's most interested in experiencing the music in its context, maybe he could review un-narrated gameplay of those levels?
The Ultrakill 7-2 theme (Siren Song of the Dead) sounds at parts a bit like Border of Life from Touhou 7, I encourage you to check it out. i love how ultrakill can be one of the most insanely difficult and skill expressive games at higher difficulties and trying to perfect rank while simultaneously having easier difficulties that allow people to just experience the story and music
Fun fact: in 7-3 in the big rooms the enemys figth themselfs until the only enemy left is the player. Fun fact Number 2: in 7-3 there is a earthmover looking down at the player it is visible especially when the red ligthting "strikes" ilumnating the sky. Fun fact Number 3: mainly visible in 7-4, the Eartmove has a city on its back. Fun fact Number 4: at the start of 7-4 the earthmover looks down to attack V1 letting its defense down resulting in it getting attacked by another earthmover in the distance
Glad to see you've enjoyed your time with this game and had the chance to hear the tracks in their proper context. Let's see what Hakita cooks up for Fraud and Treachery
honestly i believe 7-2 shouldve been designed a tad bit differently ive seen so many playthroughs of people playing half the level backwards and then getting stuck at the payload area because they dont have the cart
fun fact: the music for gabriel's second fight, the finalized version of it was done before the update dropped by some hours, confirmed by Hakita. but even for a late finished music, it slaps and fits with gabriel in this state of the story
Bro did not understand that BLOOD IS FUEL 😭 besides that one part this playthrough is pretty surprising! I know its on lenient but you managed to beat a lot of levels fairly well!
I recommend if you’re ever having trouble to use the screwdriver upgrade for your railgun, it is very helpful in keeping you alive whenever you hit something with high HP
One thing I've noticed is that absolutely no one realizes the enemies in 7-3 fight eachother after the second tree is fed. Even I only figured that out when I had to look up the level on the wiki to know what the "become marked for death" level challenge was about
52:48 ”it’s like these people really don’t wanna be here you know.” Litterally the twisted bloody remains of souls who tried to escape the labyrinth. They’re still fully conscious, watching their bodies do to fellow sinners what hell has done to them.
When another streamer completed all current levels with pistol only, people cried and complained about it, and then Hakita gave a chad response "It's a good thing none of you are designing Ultrakill or it would suck". So don't feel bad about playing on easy difficulty, just have fun. I'm happy that more people get to know Ultrakill and that's about it.
I fidn it interesting to watch somebody else play a game that I have personally gotten good at and just see what things that newer people do and think of.
the song from the double hideous mass fight is actually a reprise of a previous song from Limbo, intentionally(or massively coincidentally) the level where you fight the first one with a boss bar
Now that you've beaten the main levels, you should revisit some of the earlier levels as there are plenty of secrets still to be found. Some of which even give you new weapon variants to play with.
By the way, the trees in "no sound, no memory" are supposed to represent a circle within the 7th layer of dante's inferno, violence. The second circle in the violence layer represents violence against the self, where those who attempt or commit suicide are punished as trees, since they already forfeit their own body.

During the first half of the second fight, Gabriel is screaming insults along the lines of "I can't believe I lost to you"
However, during the second half he starts to enjoy the fight. He realizes that "God's Light" can be defeated, and you are capable of doing so. The entire doctrine he believed in has been broken, and after the fight he takes some time to understand what that means for him. Then he does something drastic.
Whether it was drastic or not, he did what he needed to do
i really like how you can vision how the music mixes with the gameplay. for me, i just sort of go along with it and it subconsciously effects how i play but for you its really nice to see how you can pick apart how it progresses and effects the player. love your content
I want you to know that you're the reason I got into Ultrakill in the first place!

You missed the final words in the book there:
"The World is your Canvas ... So pick up your Brush ... And Paint ... The World ... RED"
The Phlegethon takes to the side in Light up the Night, instead focusing on perpetual war between the machines.
As someone else with a Divine Comedy hyperfixation, thank you for your service
I heard that 1000 in japanese sounds like sen, so Sen-THR "Earthmover" is to some degree a Centaur
hakita openly said that he would've liked to have put a city backdrop in heresy but he was pressed for time and also thought it ruined the vibe of the music and moment.
@@Nicotrie The THR is thor due to how it shoots a massive lighting bolt. Sen-thor. It is a centaur.
I like the part when you enter this long dark corridor in 7-3 and end up in a place where there are already battles going on between different fractions of hell, like different models of machines, types of demons and angels etc., and how it creates the picture of slowly dying world

"what are you doing here"
ah, it is but a mere generous blood donation.
Fraud and treachery are not coming this year
That sounds too hopeful
fun fact!
if you read the lore behind the earthmover you will see that it is hinted at that v1 (the robot you play as) was specifically designed to counter the earthmovers!
i love the little lore tidbits this game has.
glad to see you enjoying ultrakill :)
Just wanted to let you know Marco, there is an actual description for the Minotaur. It’s just tucked away at the bottom.
Fun fact, if you stand near any of the posing mannequins you can hear them breathing.
And the sounds the trees in 7-3 are actually distorted screaming. That's the forest of the suicides as in Dante's Inferno.
It's not evil, just ignorance driven by religious manipulation.
dude the act 2 interlude still gives me chills to this day
the entire cutscene is deadass 3 images, and yet it's one of the best cutscenes I've ever seen
1:32:36 dont know if you noticed, but from this point forward all enemies in the level are infighting and target each other (although, they will begin to target exclusively you if you get too close or attack them)

33:something Gabriel is pissed because he lost to a mere machine, "not even mortal" just a piece of metal. He, a mighty archangel, the rightous hand of the father.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A WHILE FOR THIS IM ACTUALLY EXCITED FOR THE VIOLENCE LAYER!!!
Edit: THE MANNEQUIN JUMPSCARE
also the fact that Marco easily learned how to parry the mannequins point blank made me fliplol
I was so excited to see his reaction to Beethovens seventh during the “Death stains the auditorium” story. My favorite song of all time
Okay just the fact that Marco made Gabriel stop playing the organ right before it would have looped, that made my day.
"How many had he killed? Had he ever thought to count? How much cruelty did he embody... and to what end? How many did he condemn to hell and who did it benefit..?"
I find this introspection by Gabriel so interesting because he could be talking about V1 (you), but he could just as easily be talking about himself or even God. All three had shown cruelty, and all killed others in vain. Sentencing to hell or just assisting? The fact that Gabriel never mentions V1 as a he, but only as a machine or a thing supports this heavily.
It would be pretty weird for him to be referring to someone else in his *introspective* scene, so Gabriel is definitely talking about himself.
thats kinda dumb, hes obviously talking about himself
Great video! I'd also highly reccomend reading the terminal entries for the guttermen and the earthmover, very... *interesting* stuff to say the least

If you look in the controls there's an area to change your arm punches to be different buttons entirely so you can instantly punch with whatever arm you want instead of one button making you swap arms and you have to remember which one you're on, just in case you'd prefer that since the single button swapping can feel awkward at times.

I'll edit this with my thoughts at the end :D
7-1 EDITS: 48:32 was worth EVERY second of the wait lol.
Hakita and the dev team didn't want crosses in at first, but then realized Gabriel has a huge one on his head, so they had to come up with a meaning for it
Why didn't they want crosses for it?
@@addison_v_ertisement1678 Ultrakill, while somewhat based on Dante's inferno, isn't really christian lorewise. No mention of Jesus is made, and all parallels to actual Abrahamic faiths are old testament related, and even then they aren't often specific references to abrahamic theology.
Christian cosses wouldn't really make sense in ultrakill's hell, as the context of Jesus' crucifixation isn't relevent to the ingame kingdom of heaven.

absolute fire seeing your gameplay man! love to see you enjoying the game! Loved the video so much! You did great!
marco harmonizing with the music is honestly kind of relaxing despite the aggressive drums
23:33 marco hits a successful freezecharge
I just realized something
The reason why 6-1's title is "Cry for the Weeper" and why its theme sounds sad is because of the people who got ended up in the layer
Human souls started to fill Hell full and among those souls gets scorched in Heresy.

So don't feel bad about playing on easy difficulty, just have fun. I'm happy that more people get to know Ultrakill and that's about it.
I fidn it interesting to watch somebody else play a game that I have personally gotten good at and just see what things that newer people do and think of.
i love how he walks out of the elevator in layer 7-4 and sees earth mover '' Oh my fu-''
the song from the double hideous mass fight is actually a reprise of a previous song from Limbo, intentionally(or massively coincidentally) the level where you fight the first one with a boss bar
