Anyone that knows me knows I'm a Gem Single Edge razor blade guy and have been for years, I'm excited about this one for sure and congrats on the innovation Shane. Hearing your excitement in your voice was so great to hear ! 👍
@@daveinky cool beans. Both great choices. Honestly I'm one of the few people that love the Ever Ready 1924. Ever ready 1914 is a close second but 1924 beats it because with the 1924 sounds like I'm scraping toast when I shave 😆
Wow! Ok, I'm already putting back money, I'm getting in on ground level with this one! Awesome innovation! I love the new profile as well! I can't wait to see the handle! Also, I might not mind seeing this in high polished brass with the stainless guard highly polished as well! Excited for this! Looking forward to seeing more, and to the release!
@blacklandrazors that's a good point, I hadn't thought of that... maybe brass baseplate and handle with stainless top cap and guards... might look good as a two tone like that with all pieces highly polished.
What an innovative, versatile and exciting razor! Can't wait to see the finished product! Hope the stand has a spot to hold the other guard. Also, a travel case with a pouch to also hold the second guard would be a great accessory.Well done Shane!
Wow! I almost bought the OG Sabre when I saw it was being phased out, but now I'm glad I waited. I love the look and the design of your 1st functional prototype. The safety bar swap function is genius and with a magnet too! Way to put that expensive education to work, Shane! The Gem blade works great for my face and whiskers. Take my money please! Titanium. I realize I'm probably in the minority on this, but i still prefer the weight of stainless steel or brass. I love my stainless Blackbird, but sold the Titanium Blackbird after a couple of months. Different strokes for different folks. Cheers! -Rob
Shane can't wait to see what kind of design you go for with the handle. You always amaze with the handle designs. I know it's down to personal taste, but I prefer the understated elegance of the brass Blackbird handle to something like the Osprey handle, but that's just me.
I was a long hold out on GEM style razors thinking I've found the crem de la crem of DE razors, why would I need to try some razor format that I wrongly assumed was obsolete. I love my original Sabre after years and years of hearing about it and other Gem style razors I finally took the plunge. It's honestly a joy to use now and if I would have tried a GEM razor like the Sabre before getting into DE razors, I may have just stuck to GEM style and have been happy for the rest of my life. Can't wait to try the new and improved version!!!
Fascinating, Shane. We’ve been waiting and are impressed 👍🏼 Re: titanium… I don’t necessarily think it’s a must IF you make a lightweight maneuverable SS handle (maybe hollowed?) Also, I think I’d prefer a polished finish on the new Sabre razor. Thanks for the video update!
Hi Shane. This was very interesting and the safety guard part, well sir, you're a flipping genius! Superb. I do like the mild shave, so I'm happy with the head I have although a Ti Sabre! Now that would be nice but I doubt I could afford it. I have always enjoyed my original Sabre head on the Vector handle; I like the weight and balance better, so I'm interested in seeing what you do with the new handle. Great work.
Just watched the vid. Very impressive. Those safety bars are going to be difficult to stop from bending in production. But they could be tweaked afterwards. Looking forward to when these came out. As for a Titanium version. Do what a few companies have been doing. Money up front pre-orders. They normally sell out fast when you have a faithful customer base.
Preventing flex during machining is really important and was a large part of our engineering effort. We’re pretty confident we have a solid approach to this that keeps those bars rigid and straight. But we’ll also have rigorous QC afterwards to ensure straightness.
Great approach. Any chance you would be doing a similar redesign of the Vector? I'm already deep on DE and AC blades. Trying to avoid another blade format.
Thanks! A Vector with this mechanism isn't out of the question over the long term, but we don't have any current plans for a new Vector. We'll see how the Sabre does before we decide whether to use this mechanism on different products.
This is a really neat idea Shane, I love magnets too, and this is a wonderful usage of a Neodymium. I assume that the single edge vector loads a blade from behind, in that slot you see. Frankly, anyone who is a single edge razor user, has got to love this design. I also appreciate the sleek aesthetics, quite nice. I also appreciate that you said that, this is not innovation just for the sake of innovation, this is about delivering a better product. Don't you love when one of those brain ideas, actually reach fruition? 😃
The razor looks great and for me I am a fan of Ti overall. My one observation is can the safety bar be sandwiched between the base plate and cap instead of underneath the base plate? This would allow an one piece outside surface that I think may look slightly better aesthetically - hiding the joint of the two pieces internally. Awesome job.
I am excited for this razor also.the old Sabre for me is for me the best Gem modern razor. However I am cautious about the magnet. I have some tools that sit on espresso portafilters via magnets and sametimes the magnet would come loose. Is the magnet screwed or glued into the base plate? The whole adjustable concept sits on the magnet design. If that magenet comes loose, I guess you loose a lot of functionality.
It's true that the magnet could work itself loose over time. We're using a permanent epoxy, but nothing is truly bulletproof. There are few good things here though that help improve this situation. - If the magnet comes out, it's almost certain to come out stuck to the safety bar. So you'd probably still have it and can glue it back in for a few more years of shaving. - The razor works perfectly fine without the magnet if you truly lost it. It's a bit more annoying to stack the pieces without the magnet, but it's totally functional. The magnet just makes assembly more pleasant. - You (or we) can easily replace lost magnets. There's nothing proprietary about the magnet so you'll be able to replace it even if Blackland isn't around someday.
I assume it can be used WITHOUT the safety bar, right? (evil grin) Titanium +1, but for clarification I look forward to titanium purely for the weight/balance perspective, if you can hollow/cavern out stainless steel to achieve similar weight/balance it could be interesting (but I guess the processing cost probably not worth it)
It's still reasonably heavy so I don't think you'll have any problem with that! We're targeting sub-100g. It'll likely wind up in the 80s which is enough weight that purpose while still being pretty maneuverable.
Looks amazing. I love my sabre. Plate 2 for me. My only worry is that I buy the new sabre and still only use side 2 ! What is the likely cost? Will you sell just the head to fit on my existing sabre handle with stand?
Thanks for watching! We don't have pricing yet. We'll announce that as we finalize production details. Like all of our razors, the Sabre will be available as a complete razor only and the head will not be available separately.
Like the Vector, this is such a beautifully designed work of art (razor)! I love all of my GEMs and plan to purchase the new Sabre as soon as it is available. I second the "Hope the stand has a spot to hold the other guard." A travel case would be great, too. In fact, please make one for your Vector, as it's nearly impossible to find something classy to use for travel.
Shane, You are an amazingly innovative artisan! Wow, continuous enhancements and building really cool razors! You are a Razor Design “Rock Star!” One question I have is how different are the 4 ranges, for example, are there two mild baseplate options and two that are aggressive? That would be good to know. Thanks!
Good question. I'm hoping the levels are comparable to the original so that I'll have 2 more aggressive levels than I'm used to with my OG level 2 Sabre
Shane love the thought put into this. As has been said, you are truly a genius when it comes to designing these especially when improving on a previously "perfect" product. I'm probably alone when I say this but I would love one of these in brass but the magnet would be the problem with brass being non magnetic. I'm also one of the few that still prefers extra weight.
thought you were going to say the levels 1-2 and 3-4 would be achieved by flipping the same safety bar upside-down as well as under or above the base plate 😮
Thank you! Price TBD on both. But stainless is slightly better defined. We're looking in the $200s here. We'll have more clarity on both options as we finalize production.
Well, I'm impressed with the shave, but the finish on the final products exterior is the worst looking finish I've ever received... the tooling marks look the same on my finished razor as the one in your video 😢.
Hey John! I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed in the finish. Shoot us an email and we can discuss options. Possibly a bump up the polished finish. support@blacklandrazors.com
