I've been seeing some backlash about Brutal so I'll defend it for some points (prepare for essay): First there is so much more going on than just speed buffs. To me one of the best changes from previous difficulties is enemies leading their shots with projectiles. It makes it so running in circles around everything is no longer free and I actually have to feint and crossup more, which is a skill the game required when it introduced prime soul fights. But it also makes parries way easier because I don't have to stand still and wait for the enemies to aim at me (leading to other enemies getting in) , I can now hit parries and heal without stopping my movement. So I don't really understand the arguments about how it forces you to play the game safer. I think people feel like they have to hide behind walls and slow down a ton just because they just haven't gotten used to how hard the enemies hit, and that's totally valid. But that won't be the most optimal way to beat levels, because the healing system and trickier enemy AI will put you at a disadvantage if you aren't taking control of the situation. Eventually you will be able display just as much skill and style as before, the difference is now you can't just run around without ever reacting to or respecting the enemy's actions. You don't have to quit being aggressive, you just have to juggle more information. I think it will be so much cooler once players adapt to the changes and still be able to play the game in a hyper aggressive style. The other thing is this update buffed V1 as well by adding the full arsenal. Utilizing everything in the kit efficiently will probably take a very long time and some individual practice. But if learning all of the new ways to deal damage isn't prioritized then Brutal will definitely feel harder. For me learning new tech is one of my favorite parts of this game, but I think this is something that makes a lot of people not want to play as much; they want to be able to play the game in the exact way they are comfortable, while expecting the new difficulty to make it feel like they're experiencing everything fresh again. That being said, I couldn't agree more that adding fresh enemy placements would be a pretty sick addition to a new difficulty in the future. But I also think that Brutal fits the current placements well; the familiarity of what to expect to get thrown at you balances the unfamiliar enemy speed and AI. Maybe the final difficulty will mix things up. I agree some minor balance tweaks wouldn't hurt (cerbs are definitely too oppressive in close quarters) and filth AI is currently very awkward with how they get stuck in weird places. But overall I think Brutal works great as something for people who want to grow their skill ceiling after fully mastering the game mechanics. It's a definite jump from Violent, so it will be understandably frustrating if players think they can just P-rank everything quickly again without updating/refining their playstyle a bit.
I see your essay and counter that solders literally are fucking teleporting because they're broken. this isn't a step up, shit went from 0-100. I'm a ss-UK style meter player and I'm struggling with LIMBO. yes, LIMBO. I think the changes are nice but the speed needs to end wayyyy the fuck down. faster then violent? sure! all for it. but most enemies seeing a radiance esqe buff is just fucking lazy tbh. not to mention all the lag! ever since violence came out I've been having issues, now with this I can't even go past wave 12 cg without my game becoming a slide show. guess I'll just be sticking my baby ass to violent cuz I apparently suck at the game even tho I have movement and most the guns down I'd say pretty pat. hell I've mastered most movement but guess that's not good enough for brutal
@@ramentaryramblings I got through Prelude&Limbo&Lust going for P-ranks with like 12 deaths max and i am horrible at movement 90% of the time and my keyboard's buttons require the force of a collapsing star to press down, None of my deaths felt unfair and were only because i messed up in some way. I hope there is a mod that gives enemies their brutal move sets on any difficulty This looks so much more fun but i can’t comprehend whats happening when it goes so fast
Most of the brutal changes to my knowledge weren’t stat increases or anything, so bringing over the move sets to other difficulties like violence per instance would just make it brutal with almost 0 differences
I agree with Brutal being rushed. The moment the team announced they'd be working on Brutal next I was like, "Jesus, that's a huge fucking undertaking now with all the VIOLENCE enemies and bosses." But now it's... done already?
To be entirely fair, some of the changes were around a while beforehand. You could console command into Brutal (and UKMD) and some of this stuff was already there, namely the projectile and movement buffs.
I feel like brutal is a good mode overall, an I think that as time goes on we will surely adapt to all of this. But I won't ignore the fact that it's probably a little too difficult for most of the players. I managed to get to wave 53 of cyber grind in violent and p ranked the whole game but now in brutal I'm struggling with act 2 P ranks and can't even arrive to wave 40 in the cybergrind, but that's probably just a skill issue.
tbh brutal is kinda broken. the step up from violent to brutal is like a 0-100. not saying I'm a god like player with all 200 hours I have, but I'm not bad either. got everything p-ranked on violent and my pb on cybergrind is a 36 (I can do better I just currently can't play past wave 12 because game is unoptimized past violence dropping. guess it means I gotta upgrade my PC) and I'm struggling with LIMBO. feels like such a kick in the dick when I've got movemt mastered and and most the weapons down pat.
Hey, great video, one thing, you need to improve the weapon mode selection, cause you get stuck switching weapons then the mods, witch augments your time
are you having any fps issues with the cybergrind? Whenever I play my frames go from 120 to 30 in just 5 waves (25-30). My fps was perfectly fine before the update because I got to wave 50, without lag, 2 days before the game updated.
@@queckquack6298 ah, I didn’t see it because I was in a rush, but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with this issue since I couldn’t find anyone else with fps problems after the update.
ha! I can't get past wave 12 before I get a slide show. I usually ran at 250 before violence dropped, after that id leave the terminal area and take a 50 fps hit now I'm struggling to keep 30 in 0-5 with frame skips everywhere.as soon as I leave the terminal area I take a 125 fps tank. this update was so rushed
for some ILs it might be through more friendly fire or more aggressive AI resulting in faster kills but overall and for boss levels (brutal bosses have more health), vio might still be standard for CG idk, I'd wait until healing is fixed and brutal is maybe more polished to say and I haven't properly gotten around to playing brutal CG
Cerberi are a bitch to fight in this mode. If they spam they shoulderbash in closequarters they are borderline impossible to deal with. I P-Ranked almost all bosses in my brutal playthrough but died 16 times in 0-5. That double shoulderbash needs to either go or heavily nerfed so he doesn't do 2 instantly. Otherwise i think it's overall "fine" though it feels way too hard for being just 1 level above violence.
yeah the jump from violent to brutal is nasty. I'm struggling with LIMBO on brutal but I can pass most levels on violent with ease, most the time p-ranking them. feels like a kick to the balls now
Dealing with 0-5 at the moment, double shoulder dash spam is fucking infuriating, I feel like I just can't do anything when they do that move like 5 times in a row and just juggle me in the air like its DMC and I'm the enemy
As someone that has P-Ranked everything up to P-2 on Violent, I feel like Brutal difficulty (and honestly layer 7 in general) is just silly. It goes too far and becomes more frustrating than challenging; hard for the sake of being hard, but since when was that what Ultrakill was about? Sure, I could probably learn it, I S/P-ranked most missions I played, but it's just not as fun because I don't think the core game and its mechanics work as well when the enemies are like this.
i don't think brutal should be for anyone but the most dedicated of freak gamers. it ought to be something that only the biggest nerds should be able to P rank
@@krollic feels like current brutal should be V1 must die tbh. I just don't see how anything harder would be remotely accessible to even 1/1000 players
@@littlehorn0063 That's not the definition of accessible that I was really using. To elaborate on my point, though, I think this is difficult in the wrong ways. I find my playstyle in brutal to simply be less fun and more safe. In the same way where if you make a shooter too difficult it becomes a cover shooter where you have to play it safe. A great example is Vanquish where there's a perfect balance of style and difficulty. I think Ultrakill's recent obsession with difficulty (potentially exacerbated by its slow early access development cycle where there's a constant incentive to top itself) is kind of missing the point of why the game was fun in the first place, kind of like Dark Souls 1 to 2. P-2 on Violent was that perfect sweet spot for me. I would have preferred Brutal to have unique new-game + esque enemy placements rather than just double the projectiles and speed of every enemy.
@@TwistedScarlett60 wait, did they just gave more speed to all enemies and that's it? I think I do agree with you and I think they should add more stuff like the filth being able to jump like the hunter from L4D2 instead of just more speed which depending on how you play means you're going to try to spam even more saw traps or just play even more safer and slower.
