Glad you are enjoying our backyard! The issues you are experiencing now might explain why caravans are not that popular especially top heavy/high clearance. Very changing weather conditions and the stress that comes with driving that takes away from relaxing when getting out and about. If by the end of the trip you haven’t been gifted any pounamus I’ll be glad to shout you one each. Hold me accountable for that bit of kiwi hospitality.
We have found it pretty handy getting into spots having the higher clearance! Especially down south near invercargil. No worries mate we will hold you to that one haha 😂
Fantastic start to the NZ adventure, straight onto Banks Peninsula and my old home town and family farm. We've had a lot to do with the Akaroa lighthouse over the years. Some steep roads out there. Most of the drone footage is along where I grew up

Hey guys what's your itinerary for the South Island trip? Just so you know there's great surfing on the South West coast around Riverton & all of Te Waewae bay. The Catlins Otago is mean & has some great surf spots also.
We have done down the middle to the bottom then going up the west coast to the top! got a surf in the other day at the catlins!! scored it to myself haha bit spooky with all the sealions around!! thanks man!!
I got a similar shock when I first came to OZ for different reasons
A flat place where you saw that the earth was round
Being winter you won’t need a chilly bin or your tog’s even wearing jandals will give you frost bite
Can’t wait to hear your first impressions of Milford sound, it’s beyond spectacular

Make sure you get to mount cook village and white horse camp site it’s just awesome. Milford sound is a must do.
Haast pass from the west coast through to Wanaka is an amazing drive.
In Queenstown two offroad short trips without van are Macetown and skippers canyon. Skippers canyon is easy but is amazing especially for drone footage. Macetown is an old gold mining town and has like 30 water crossings so you would want the river flows to not be too high pretty easy overall but so much fun.
The Lewis pass and Arthur’s pass will blow your mind, both quite different.
Totranui is a really cool beach camp isolated by a 45 minute drive on a dirt road. You go past a town called Takaka which is really cool. Kinda hippy with a very nice drive over a big hill to get in.

Those are some tough roads through Banks Peninsular with good memories of trips and events out there - Including an annual MTB Orientering event. Looking forward to more of the travels :)

Yeah, Groceries are ridiculously priced here because we have only two supermarkets countdown and paknsave, a duopoly. Truly stinks. Saint Jacinda and her diverse bunch should do something about that. Hahaha you did the same as we did, we want to Akaroa first and said shit if the rest of the roads are like this we are in trouble. What we did find is that most NZ roads are all cambered correctly ant it makes it a very pleasant drive. Not like stupid off camber roads in OZ. Anyway enjoy we had a ball and can't wait to get back there.
Hahah it made for a good ice breaker though! However yesterday we drove haast pass in the snow and ice towing and it was extremely scary, was like mixing Akaroa road with ice and snow! Very challenging! I agree roads are built really well over here!! Thanks Wayne thanks for the comment mate 🤙🏽🍻

Do you all have the F150 in Australia or in this case do they have it in New Zealand? That would have been a much better choice for Towing that awesome beast of a camping trailer 👍

Great VLOG. The engine is most likely 2.0 litre with a 10 speed. The 3.2 is an in-line five with six speed (which I have and she's called "Rangie"). When I tow, I drive in manual in 5th and only take 6th on straight and flat, with a tail wind (14' Sunseeker Hybrid). This reduces heat and stress on the transmission. I also use manual going (big) downhills to stop warping on the front discs. I've also swapped out the rear brake shoes to ones that don't catch fire ;)
If you do have the 10 speed, I'd be working the transmission between 4th and 8th (when moving). With a van that size, I'd never want it in 9th/10th.
The OEM GVM is 3,200 Kg and the GCM is 6,000 Kg. You can't change the GCM but I have a pre-rego GVM upgrade from 3,200 Kg to 3,500 Kg with, among other niceties, a 600 Kg constant-load spring kit by Lovells. This increases the payload from 922 Kg to 1,222 Kg, payload includes the ball weight of a towed item. So, I'd watch your load-out - five pairs of undies might be one too many ;)
We lived in Devonport '95-'96, North Shore City across the harbour from Auckland - so we weren't JAFAs. When we toured the South Island we were struck by the low population density compared to the North Island and the monstrous hills. On one 'shortcut' I had to let my wife drive while I spotted the front wheels, going uphill on dirt with a 600m drop to the left!
In '95-'96 everyone had land lines, no mobiles then. So while NZ is known as the land of the long white cloud, it was also known as the land of the long phone call as locals calls were free. When you invited people over for brunch/lunch/dinner - the phone would go off the hook as people rang to say "we're on our way!".

Great video guys. I know the roads on the south island can be challenging. Did a lap of the island a few years back with the missus staying in B'nB's. You just need to stick to the plan, stay calm and take it step by step. The name for the Ranger needs to start with 'R'. I rather like Ralph or maybe Roger. Looking forward to the next one. She and her partner surf South Island NZ. They will put you onto tip 2......waves in the.......?. Tip 3. Get a 7 plus foot mid length twinny :)

Great vid, out of interest, taking into account currency conversion, how much more expensive would you say NZ is than OZ, for example is it generally 5% more for every day items?
Thanks legend! Great question so we converted currency through travel X and got pretty well an even conversation which sucks! Grocery’s and fuel and extra tax would be atleast 20-30% more expensive over here
Eg. 2L of milk is 5-6$
Beef Mince 1kg is 16-17$

Just in general Dale the terrain over here is steep, not many gradual hills always steep where in aus they are very sloped and gradual!
Hey mate just a thing I was thinking about and forgot to mention or rather ask….. does the van not feel a bit nervous under braking down the mountains? The reason I am asking is because you have the van at a incline hooked up to the Stranger, the weight distribution between the two axles is not even. You should change the hitch up to level the van.
Maybe you are not experiencing anything , but was just a thought, we dont want to see you get into strife or get hurt.

Narh it pulls up really well with the disc brakes!! Feels a lot better than our Armorlite!! We love this van to tow! Tows extremely smooth and brakes well down steep hills
