I once received a commission in which the client gave me a philosophical paper and told me to read it and create a painting. At first, I was nervous but excited. It took me a few months to create the piece, and he loved it. It's lots of fun to explore new things!
I think I speak for everyone here, we’d like to see ANYTHING that you’re painting. It’s so mesmerizing at times. Every brush stroke seems so coordinated and planned. So yes, show us that huge canvas.
Yes. Like, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, etc. Artists relied on rich patrons and patrons liked to commission stuff. And the real professionals delivered. If you live off it, it's a job.
building a gunpla, then losing a part half way through and getting a second set to continue said gunpla, for reference is such a massive powermove respect, major respect
I think the issue with commissions in today's insa-culture is that people generally don't understand that the commission process is collaborative from both sides. Clients think that commissioning an artist is like ordering from Burger King and artists believe that they should have 100% creative range to do whatever they want for a commission because they are "the artist". I think both of these approaches are wrong. Overall I believe people are frustrated with the comission process on both sides because there is a lack of respect for the creative process and artists in general. I myself am tired of being asked to do things for free, with endless edits and iterations, being possibly ghosted half-way through a project, all while under unrealistic expectations and ridiculous time constraints. Unfortunately, not many artists who do commissions talk about how they approach the business/client side of the discussion, how to set expectations and what to do if things start to go wrong. I definitely would be interested to see how you handle this process with clients and what are the steps you take to keep everything on track and ending positively.
I think commissions are a wonderful way to challenge yourself to bring out someone else's vision and while there are horror stories of working with impossible clients, I think there is also a great satisfaction revealing a painting to your elated client and they tell you it's exactly what they wanted or even better. Picking the right clients and commissions are important for sure. It's a skill to be able to communicate well with your client to make sure you are aligned with their idea.
Happy to hear you speak so positively about fan art. I know some people look down on it (thankfully haven't met too many yet), but it brings a certain joy to me to paint characters or creatures that I know and associate memories and feelings with. Usually it makes me happier than painting a person that I have no connection to. The majority of my art is fan art, and it is also a large part of how I learned to make art. I think some people simply underestimate how much work, effort and passion can go into fan art or other fan creations. The gundam turned out great! Would love to see you finish the giant one.
I’ve never heard of people down playing commissions, but I can’t say I’m surprised in this day and age 😑 I’ve been trying to get as many commissions as I can for years! 😂 It’s one of the hardest things an artist has to do I think (next to marketing 😝). I love making art, be it someone else’s idea or my own, and have always thought commissions were that added challenge of making something AND blowing the mind and expectations of your client. When you can do both it’s the best sort of praise you can get. I think those who don’t like commissions are kinda the types that just want that money tree to appear from a magical land or something 😂
I think it's a "if no one wants to buy my original art, I guess I HAVE to take on commissions to make a living" point of view, which is really sad. I agree with you: there's that extra bit of challenge involved in a commission. Maybe that's too scary for some? So instead of facing the difficulties, you downplay commissions, so you can hide in your comfort zone...? For a commission, you get to make something really special for someone who is not able to make it themselves. Isn't that just really awesome?!?
Of course we want to see the biggest painting you’ve ever done, and would like to see you finish it ☺️ silly question. Thank you for agreeing that commissioned works help make you a better artist! I enjoy commissions as well because they help me grow and experience new techniques, new mediums, new ideas, and almost always bring joy to those we do them for 😊
Some of us are a brush for hire, but not by choice. I'm not particularly creative, although I'm an "artist". So, i totally depend on commissions to create my body of work. Left on my own, I would rarely paint anything that would stand out. Combined with a client who knows what they want, the sky is the limit.
There were times when I did commissions. Problem was these were mostly dog paintings! Often from poor photos! The most heartfelt reaction came from a painting I despised most. Problem was that the person that commissioned it did it as a gift for another person. The dog had died a few months ago and the ownders missed him very much! We had agreed on a timeframe, but more than a week before deadline she called me to tell me she "needed the finished work tomorrow"! I had made good progress but it was far from my standards. I worked through the night and a good part of the next day, but it still was far from what I would normally give away. I really felt ashamed and despised to be related to that half baked thing. A few weeks later I met the recipients when I visited the "commissioners" and they were told that I was the "artist". To my total shock (i was about to begin apologizing for the poor execution) they hugged me both, with tears running down their face (no, I´m not Donald Trump, I only sound like him now) and couldn´t stop thanking me. Sadly other customers killed the vibe for me so I stopped doing dog commissions.
I love your videos. I watch it every time it's updated. The video of a Chinese woman with gold and dragon motifs was the best. I make Gunpla videos, but I never thought the day would come when you would draw Z Gundam!
I think you pointed out some of the most terrifying and liberating aspects of commission work. I took on a few pieces in the past (not to your skill level or size), but what I found was that after getting over the fear of "will it be liked?" it was easier having some of the choices already made. Sometimes freedom is in closing one door to move on through another. I never had any regrets taking the commissions. I look back at them now and feel they helped me in many ways, like dealing with real people and developing my social skills. Maybe that's what is missing with the negative criticism.
Please paint what you want, but I for one would love to see you finish the giant robot painting. I enjoy all your posts and all your paintings. It is all educational and inspiring. TFS
All I want to do is paint a giant robot now. That looked so incredibly fun. Also props to the editor for all of the cuts when you were cutting all of the model pieces
I think the goal is to get to where you choose to do commissions or not. The commissions get you to things you you might not have wanted to do. Your perspective is spot on, thanks for the video!
You are my total inspiration and role model. You work so, so hard and it’s really paid off in the masterful way you paint. But you are like “Sisu” (Finnish film). Sisu is the Finnish word for grit or gumption. Like Sisu you battle against all odds, getting almost killed every time only to emerge bloody but breathing. Thanks for the video and sharing your process with us.
If you do ANYTHING creative, regardless of subject, medium or style, you are a REAL artist, PERIOD FULL STOP - NO if’s, NO ands, NO buts & NO exceptions!
Well done! I had to laugh because ironically I also have a gundam commission painting that has been kicking around my studio unfinished for a few years haha.
I was stationed in Germany 4 years, had been renting a house in downtown Spangdahlem, up the road from Trier. I absolutely loved the country. & all the castles and everywhere
Aaaargh! Thank you, that was so difficult to hear and accept! I've been having some hard time with commissions lately, mostly because I am comfortable doing landscapes and clients want family portraits mostly. So I was considering becoming "a real artist" and shutting down my commissions. Now what I'll do instead is embrace the difficulties and learn from them as best as I can! Thank you, man! For everything you do!
fett! i love this painting! hahaha and i actually do a commission job (painting 13 canvases for an influencer event next wednesday) while seeing this… who cares at all about the title of being “real” by the criteria of others… had this conversation so many times, and i am just tired of it, as those who start to open the topic of realness, and telling me, i was not real, are after 5 minutes of talking ALWAYS the most sensitive people, who just want to be loved by others, and secretly wish to have the strength to do what they want… so “you are not real” means basically “i am weak”. great video. and the colours of this robot at the end are so buttery soft and nice… love it!
Haha, thanks SMOE! Wow 13 paintings! That’s wild… bin gespannt was du so gemacht hast! Yeah, people talk a lot… but nobody who is actually successful, happy, or serious talks about stupid things like realness 😄
You are right that creative process is often chaotic. I think I would look for another ways I could make this piece instead of buying another set;). Commisions are often underestimated because that's how most artists start. They think they need to create something that somebody would actually buy as they are not that recognised yet. I think comissions can be even more difficult. When you paint what you want, you often go with the flow. When you paint e.g. a portrait, it is important to capture the likeness and the energy of the person. Once I was asked to paint a small girl who had passed away. I was too scared to do it so I refused. I love your painting! I would love to see the bigger piece.
As a digital artist, I appreciate the discussion on fan art. Sometimes I wish I could come up with novel ideas, bust most of the time what gets me going is drawing or painting something I love
This painting is EPIC!! Every video you do is like a comforting movie. Your style is so mesmerizing and I have just fallen in love with how you speak about art and the masterpieces you create. You inspire so many people, especially myself. Bringing me right bak out of art block ☺🥰.
Well, of course we want to see the giant. We can't get enough of your wonderful works. You're one smart and talented guy Alpay Efe and very appreciated. Thank you for sharing all you do.
Yes. Please yes, finish that painting!!! I long for the day when we go to museums and enjoy robots and Minecraft, and all kinds of things that make up what means to be living in the here and the now. I love this piece, and if I had the kind of money that meant I could order commissions, I would throw that money around like there was no tomorrow; there are so many amazing artists out there who create beautiful art that are just not taken serious because of what they choose to paint. There is was a gentleman on youtube that decided to paint his entire walk through Elden Ring on a sketch book, and it is triumphant! Thanks for sharing
Most of the art that I make is commission based, and I love that it pushes my skills and creativity as an artist by forcing me to work with subjects that I'm unfamiliar with. I love working within constraints because it forces me to be more creative with what I can do - personally, having unlimited options leads to decision fatigue and procrastination.
You speak better English than I do and I'm from an English speaking country 😂 You are such an amazing storyteller, who knows how to make words work and the stories are always so rich. I hate the haters. I don't care what people paint as long as they enjoy it. People who create these fictional rules that you can't paint fan art or people who say you shouldn't use a projector... They can do what they like, but for me, we all should do what we enjoy and we also all have different end goals. Too many negative people probably get in the heads of beginners who are then lost to art, because they are told not to do X.
Always love hearing your perspectives on art and somehow I feel they always mimic my personal journey at the correct time. I’m working on a ton of commissions right now and I also feel there is a weird connotation with doing commissions these days which is so strange! Thanks for the beautiful painting and enlightening comments as always.
Noni's little pitter patter is so cute 🥰Yes we want to see the ginormous robot art! But also, I think it would be awesome to just watch a video of you speaking German throughout. We can read subtitles! Love hearing people speak their native tongue 👍🏼
I think you should finish the giant robot painting. Firstly i (and those of us who watch your channel) will want to see it. Secondly, its there, in the back of your mind unfinished...and that would nag at me if i had started something but not finished it Also, if you started it a few years ago, your style will have changed a bit so you will have another chance to see how you used to paint and a challenge how you can update it to reflect where you are now. I look forward to seeing it in a future episode.
I love painting babies and toddlers! I do these commissions but I must say that they have to be a certain expression for me to want to do it. I totally agree that the best works come from constraints but enough freedom as well at least for me!🎉
I don’t do commission work because each day I’m off on my own exciting new journey and people who want commissions want something that moves me backwards or off my own path to new things completely. Nice forward
I love watching you paint, because it’s calming and so thought out that I can’t look away! I was wondering if you could make a video about the different canvas surfaces you use! Like how you make your boxed plywood canvases!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼😭
I want to see it. I’m an artist I love doing commissions. I’ll paint things that I normally wouldn’t paint. I’m always letting people know I do commissions. I love you’re artwork by the way. ❤
I've taken commissions of painting children in the past and I loved it. I loved it so much, I hoped my clients hated it so I could keep the portraits but it didn't happen.
Thankyou for your videos i really love watching your videos especially when im not feeling inspired. But it seems after watching i normally always feel alot of inspiration.
Ok so now you have to finish your other robot painting, because we need to see it! I enjoy all of your videos and appreciate all your thoughts on these touchy topics.
It would be great to see you finish the big painting and hear you talk about the process you take to finish something that´s been hanging in the studio for a long time. Hope you can share that
Thank you for talking about commissions and putting them into the historical context. I've actually been wanting to write a book (more like a booklet) on commissions in art, not so much on the technical side of things, but more on the psychological / emotional part of it because I, too, think they are massively underappreciated by artists these days. If I ever get around to it, may I interview you, Alpay? 😊😊
When You spend a large portion of your life painting a commission for someone and it gets completed, and they take it home...it feels like they just left with a piece of you. Kind of like giving away one of your children
I'm down on commissions also, the issue I had was people would see what I did and would ask me to do something else. The other issue I had is I would do nearly photo--realistic portraits and whilst I would give specific instructions I would receive photos not fit for use with my approach, I started seeing myself as the problem so I simplified my work.
While I do appreciate artists making art for the sake of making art, I also think the reason to create art, doesn't matter in the least amount possible. If you need money to create art, and comissions are the way an artist is able to do so, then that is awesome! Also I wholeheartedly agree, so many/most artworks are comissioned fanart, being against comissions and/or fanart is ridiculous. I appreciate every bit of your channel/work you show us on youtube, hope to be able to learn from you in person someday. Do we want to see you finish your biggest painting ever ? I think I speak for everyone subscribed, you had us at "do you" 😎 - because yes, a thousand times yes, whatever it is, whenever you're able to, yes yes yes!
The commissions have become some of my 12:14 best paintings from pushing past the challenge. I think we need a video on when not to take commissions, I mean nude grandmas, can’t stop the story there….must be more to it. Wish I had zombie commissions, had metamorphosis from butterfly, made a flying woman with butterflies about in the end, took me the longest to finish to date :) 😊
I once received a commission in which the client gave me a philosophical paper and told me to read it and create a painting. At first, I was nervous but excited. It took me a few months to create the piece, and he loved it. It's lots of fun to explore new things!
damn thatd be so fun
Very cool challenge. Sounds like you had a lot of fun and had a happy client. A win, win...
Wonderful to have a loose concept to interrupt even if worry if they’ll like what you go for
I think I speak for everyone here, we’d like to see ANYTHING that you’re painting. It’s so mesmerizing at times. Every brush stroke seems so coordinated and planned. So yes, show us that huge canvas.
Absolutely! Who doesn't want to see the huge painting now that it's been teased! 😅
Robots have always been cool. I really really want to see the huge robot
"a lot of world renowned art is commissions and fan art" is the unexpected view on things that i come to the internet for, thank you very much 😄
Yes. Like, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, etc. Artists relied on rich patrons and patrons liked to commission stuff. And the real professionals delivered.
If you live off it, it's a job.

Me too!!
@@AlpayEfe Me three!

Would love to see you finish the giant painting. You're such an inspiration to me, this is my favorite painting channel hands down.

It seemed really familiar in style; almost an homage to some gunpla content creators. Really well done!

I love watching you paint, because it’s calming and so thought out that I can’t look away! I was wondering if you could make a video about the different canvas surfaces you use! Like how you make your boxed plywood canvases!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼😭
I WOULD LOVE NOTHING MORE IN LIFE! Than to see that MONSTER of Gundam painting!! I understand it would be reticules to have but I need it.
😂
bro the laptop stand 17:40 🤣🤣🤣
I want to see it. I’m an artist I love doing commissions. I’ll paint things that I normally wouldn’t paint. I’m always letting people know I do commissions. I love you’re artwork by the way. ❤
I've taken commissions of painting children in the past and I loved it. I loved it so much, I hoped my clients hated it so I could keep the portraits but it didn't happen.
that's a stunning shade of blue 😍😍
Thankyou for your videos i really love watching your videos especially when im not feeling inspired. But it seems after watching i normally always feel alot of inspiration.
The way the ad is integrated into this is incredible.
I would love to see you finish the huge painting!!
yes sir!! let's see that giant painting! please and thank you.
Great video and enjoy on commissions and fanart! Keep up the great work Alpay!
When You spend a large portion of your life painting a commission for someone and it gets completed, and they take it home...it feels like they just left with a piece of you. Kind of like giving away one of your children
Holy freaking cliff hanger Batman! Of course we want to see the big painting... und schnell bitte!
Me encanta !!!! Inspiración ❤❤❤ ... Gundam quedó espectacular
18:33, YES please! 😊
Excellent work as always!! AND I would definitely like to see you finish an unresolved ガンダム painting! 🖼️
Sogar ein Roboter kann richtig cool aussehen, wenn die Komposition stimmt. Auch über Auftragsarbeiten zu sprechen ist wichtig. Gutes Video
Of course we want to see the painting finished.
Yes, we want to see the big canvas you have there! :D
Thank you, Alpay. U always give great perspective.
I guarantee that giant painting of a giant robot would appeal to somebody out there if you finish it.
Alpay…do you have video where you show how you make and construct your frames? Would love to see the canvas build process from start to finish😊
We wanna see the Gundam painting!!!
Great stuff as always, always a joy to see you paint.
Also give Noni a pat.
Woww this was cool
Waiting for the bigger one as well
He makes it look so effortless that I forget how hard it really is
Would love to see u finish it !!
