All Discovery needed to do was make its setting Post-Dominion War. The darker tone would make sense (especially if they focus on post-war trauma and how the war changed the Federation). The different ship aesthetic would also work, along with the new fancy tech (but replace the Spore Drive with a working Quantum Slipstream Drive), and the "Klingorcs" could've just been a new alien species.
Agreed the Kingonorcs could have been the Herq the aliens that Klingons were conquered by a thousand years ago. It is canon from episodes of DS9 also they could still have the same look and motif. Conquerors and the conquered often take on each other's cultural aspects.
I don't mind some comedy, because i'm a Buffy fan. But as soon as the dialogue gets cringey it puts me off. I think DS9 had a good formula. It was serious at times, but also hilarious. It had a casual quality at Quark's bar etc
I completely agree. They don't act like members of a highly educated and trained professional military/exploration/diplomatic core organization. When they are on duty, they always let emotions rule them and their decisions. They talk like teenagers hanging out with their friends also. Members of starfleet always acted like professional and rational experts in their field of choice. Who had trained and studied for years.
@@MovieMagic515DS9 did have the perfect depiction of them on duty as opposed to off duty. Allowed us to get to know the characters and their likes and personalities. While keeping them looking like a serious professional doing an important and dangerous job.
Been meaning to make my own video on this topic. I don’t mind the dark tone of Discovery although had my issues with the design choices (Strange New Worlds later showed how you could update design while making it still feel like it ‘fits’) I think having shows of different styles (and set in different centuries) running concurrently seems to have worked well the last few years so I hope they continue that. Something a bit darker and seriealsied (maybe that’s Starfleet Academy) something lighter (Keep strange new worlds around a bit longer) and something a bit comedic (a replacement for Lower Decks) AND something aimed at kids. (Fingers crossed for a 3rd season of Prodigy)
I didn't mind Discovery being dark, but it was dark without any depth. DS9 was dark but it used the darker stories to explore complex themes and ideas. Section 31 weren't just mustache twirling villains. They fully recognized that what they did was wrong but they believed that it needed to be done to protect the Federation's utopia. There was discussion over whether or not their methods could be justified. And even though Section 31 used detestable methods, they weren't unnecessarily cruel. Whereas in Discovery, you literally have protagonists quipping while they're killing people.
When I look back on it now the only things I liked about Star Trek were both from TNG (and not the movies): The design of the Galaxy Class and Picard's moral compass. By the time we have the ability to build decent spaceships we'll have already plateaued miniaturization at atomic precision, everything will be composed of utility fog and we'll have transcended biology, rendering spaceships redundant, irrelevant, unimportant and certainly unnecessary. Sucks all the fun out of sci-fi.
Personally, i'm really excited about Starfleet Academy, i'm a huge fan of Discovery season 3-5 and the 32nd century so i'm glad they chose to set it there and continue the DISCO era adventures.

The issue I have with new Star Trek is the tone. The characters don't act like professionals.

I'm going to go into it wanting to like it, despite my reservations. It's got potential.
