Then you break down the cost of materials and how many hours it took and you tell them: if I did this as a full time job I would be making $6 an hour 😂
You don't tell them anything. If they don't like the price. They need to move on. Everyone does not end up with the same finished product. When people do price way low, it hurts other sellers.
I always find myself caught off guard when people ask how long a project took. I'm like you and crochet while watching TV with my SO, put it down and pick it up. Sometimes I'll set a project down for a few days to a week. No idea of the time.
A few times I have written down exactly (give or take) how long a project took....and I realized that I could not prize a project by the hour. People have said that I should open a shop but that would take out the joy of creating what ever I want to do. Admire that you do all this work and share it, hope you make a good income from all of it! You are so worth it :-) I will surely watch more of your videos (from Sweden ) :) Bless you!
Ah, this is SO timely and helpful! Thank you! My brother was trying to give advice on my prices for amigurumi dolls and he was totally stumped when I told him it took well over the 2 hours he thought it might take. Haha!
I'm in highschool and me and my friend are planning to start selling amigurumi, crochet pieces, handmade earrings and some other craft products to raise some money for us to buy some cool yarns we're been wanting to try out, art and sewing materials, painting supplies, etc, but mainly so that we can support our cosplay projects, and your video helped me so much, i used to sell baked goods for friends and family so i'm already kinda familiar with pricing products but when it came to amigurumi or crochet pieces i was so lost, especially with the time thing since i can never really keep track of the time it takes me to actually finish a project, i'm so thankful i found this video, even if it's old it's so well explained and easy to understand it really helped me a lot (My english is not the best so i'm sorry for any mistakes 😅) kisses from brasil ♥️
I totaly hated idea of counting time spent on my amigurumi (and other projects also). Thank you sooo much for this genius solution setting price on difficulty level :D You´re a life saviour
I have in the last year made some very big projects and had no idea what to charge. Luckily I was making them for a friend and she knew LOL I made a dog and a cat for her grand niece and nephew and they were both 3ft tall LOL I also just finished a hippocampus for her daughter after six months fighting with it ROFL A lot of people don't understand what you go thru sometimes. But you will find that there is a trend right now for hand made items and those who want them are willing to pay for what you do. Thanks for this video it is really nice for using and reminding yourself that you are a craftsman not just a person who can knit or corchet.
Those toys sounds amazing!! Three feet tall!! Wow! And it is wonderful that so many people are beginning to appreciate handmade things again! I'm so glad you liked the video as well! 🌻🍄💓
This is the advice I’ve been searching for! Some of the “formulas” people use to price their toys are crazy! I like the base price for difficulty level. That’s been in my mind, but I think I just needed “permission” to do it that way. I’ve been making my way though your videos and I’m really enjoying your content. Thanks from central Ohio!
This is perfect. I wanna start selling and I don't know how to price my amigurumi. They keep saying material plus time but I couldn't figure how to calculate my material, the food scale trick is great!
Thank you for the explanation, this is very useful for me because up to now I have always been hesitant about determining the selling price of my knitting. greetings from Indonesia
Awesome idea with the kitchen scales, I might have to do that myself! My formula is a little more complex, but it feels right for me. I do 1 cent per stitch (unless it's a bulky/expensive yarn, then it's 2 cents per stich) plus a flat $1 per pair of eyes, plus a very rough estimate of materials. That way it pays for both materials and the time spent on each project without actually using time itself, if that makes sense.
Hi, I’m from Mexico but I live in California, and I just want to say Thank you so much for all the information and tips. I started selling amigurumis and I didn’t know how to price them! I love your channel 🧶🐰 Thanks again 💕✨
Great idea to include shipping in the price, postage in UK is getting very expensive (along with everything else) and it always comes as a shock when it gets added at the last minute, so much better, psychologically to include it at the beginning.
Oh boy, yes that would be important to let people know in advance. That also builds trust because you are showing the total price. Good tip! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you from Australia! I recently started crocheting some toys (with a super long list of projects I still want to try) and while I’m not exactly interested in selling any of the ones I’ve currently made since they’ve mainly been gifts to friends and family, I’ve been thinking about possibly selling a few things. (Some extra and possibly too extensive details are to follow) My main opportunity at the moment would be with this day at school called market day that allows people who take a particular class called running a business to sell things in small groups which I was thinking would be really fun to sell some small crocheted toys. My main problem at the moment however is trying to find the time to actually crochet them amongst large amounts of other hw and also what price I could sell them at because I feel like if I sold them at a higher price considering all of these things, no one would want to buy it (and also probably wouldn’t be able to since they would need to have brought enough money on that singular day in cash). But as another thought I just had while writing this, selling something even just for $5 would give me more money than just continuing making toys for free Anyway that paragraph got a lot longer than intended, so if anyone is still reading this have a good day/night!
I enjoyed this video a lot. You give very good advice. I have sold a lot of hand made items in craft shows. I made some money and it was fun, but now I am fortunate that I only make what I want to give away and I do keep a few things for myself. I got burned out on selling. It wasn't fun anymore for me. But hey I'm 69 so I guess it is time to retire :) :) Love your videos Elise. I always enjoy seeing what you are up to.
Thank so much, Diana! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And I typically will sell for a little while, get burnt out, build up a hoard and sell a few so my house isn't overtaken by amigurumi! Lol!! Thanks for sharing your selling history! Happy retirement! 🍄
Thank you for the video I have been crocheting for 6 years now and this going to help me figure out how to price my work I mostly do amigurimi but recently did a scarf and hat
Thank you very much for this video. It's very reassuring to hear this method of calculation. I often see other people showing formulas based on hourly rates and then when they show what they can do in 1 hour it shocks me. I clearly can't do the same thing in such a short time, I'm going to take 3 times as long. Nobody's going to buy a small (fairly simple) stuffed animal for $50+. I was under the impression that I was obliged to do these formulas, so thank you for proving that this isn't necessarily the case.
Your approach is SO different from mine - that is why the world is such a fascinating place!! Great tip about weighing the yarn - I never thought of that. Excellent idea! Keeping track of hours can be a real challenge. Often I'll make a toy a few times & track the time. Each day has differences. I put a Post it note on the page or pattern and keep a running tally: 15 minutes for a leg, 27 minutes for the head, 20 minutes for the embroidery. Once I have a few toys, I list the time(s) in my creator's journal. Your method of "easy, intermediate or difficult" would probably resonate with a lot of creatives who don't want to keep detailed records. The bottom line is - if we're having fun creating and someone is willing to pay a reasonable amount for it - it's a win win!!! I enjoy these hours spent with you, Elise. May you and all those whom you love be healthy, safe and whole. Hugs!!
Thank you so much, Violet! Yes, it's great that we can find what method works best for us. Most handmade formulas only take into account small projects that take an hour or two at most. That doesn't work for us amigurumi lovers! Lol! I would actually love to know how long it actually takes me to make a toy, but my flighty brain always forgets to record it! Lol! 😂😂😂
I don't make toys, but my Kippot are priced in much the same manner. Another maker said to think of the time as Life; you are putting your life into the work, the buyer is giving some of their life to pay you for yours.
Thank you for your videos, especially this one about pricing! I find that attempting to use hours to price things is very deceptive, for the reasons that you brought up. Your suggestion to group things into easy/medium/advanced with flat rates for each is a much better system than saying "I want to pay myself $x per hour, and I have to time myself to get the exact amount". Timing yourself, I find, takes a lot of the fun out of making- it feels a lot less like a labor of love and more like a... job. A minimum wage job, at that, because you're stressing so much over exact hours and the freaking pennies you're going to get. It's also okay to price your projects in order to control the amount of customers you're getting. I'm so glad you mentioned that! I'm a little worried about getting into selling handmade stuff and feeling like I have to take every single order, especially if my prices are set too low and the amount of customers is overwhelming. Once again, thank you for your videos! They're all wonderful, and you have a lot of excellent wisdom to share with us!
Thanks for the Hawaii shout out! 😄🌺🌴 It's difficult to price amigurumi for sale in the islands, the shipping cost for your product can be higher and supplies (like yarn, hooks, packaging, etc...) are usually shipped into the islands from the mainland, which puts the purchase price up. Many times, local craft stores are out of stock for several weeks! Even ordering supplies online can get expensive with shipping. Although it's slightly more expensive, it's worth every penny to get to live here in the islands! 😄🌴🌺
Holy moly! Never thought about how much it must cost to live there! And I imagine shipping would be really expensive! But I bet you get coconuts for a good price! Lol! Couldn't help myself! Still jealous of your weather and the gorgeous beaches! 🌴🌴🌴
Hi Elise! Thank you for this video! I’m about to jump in at my first farmers market table in my town. It’s a weekly market and there food vendors, soap, coffee, flowers, beeswax candles… very small town in central NC. I been crocheting items to sorta work with the other vendors (no duplicate vendors either), so washcloths, market bags, coasters and my favorite amigurumi. My goal is to only make barn type animals like chickens, cows, sheep, etc. and pricing these things is throwing me for a loop and that’s when I found your video. It gives me much to consider. So thank you. Have. Wonderful evening 🧶🦋😊
Hi Elise Thank you for sharing I was just discussing how to price Amigurumi if I ever plan to make and sell toys 🧸 so this was great timing…I appreciate your help and knowledge on this topic. Your advise is very helpful so thank you again. Take care and stay safe and well. 🙏🏽💗🧶😻🦋
Thank you for your very valuable tips. Im from Perth in Australia, I have been crocheting and knitting since I was 8yrs old. I love Quilting and make beautiful ones but its soooo expensive, I decided to have a rest from it and picked up my crochet hook again and make blankets....then tried Amigurumi....OMG I love it I started in 2018 and the majority of the toys I have sold to friends and family, Next step for me is I would love to start Designing. Just have to keep at it. Love watching your videos.
My husband went to Perth once for his job!! 🐨 I'm so glad you like the video and I always wanted to be a quilter and even took a few classes. I'm not a very exact person and don't like measuring things and I was a total quilting failure and gave up! 😂 I'm always so impressed with people who can actually make quilts!!! And I'm so glad you're enjoying amigurumi! It's so much fun!! 🐰
Thank you! I struggle with pricing things for family & friends. I kind of go by the market I’m selling to. I don’t put price tags on items. I’ve set up outside my RV at the beach and sold to the tourists walking by.
Thank you for your tips!!! You made it very simple and encouraging! I’m from Orlando, FL. I’m a beginner! I’m an online English teacher and have fallen in love with Amigurumi. I use the ones I’ve made as props and I’m inspired by student’s thrilled faces. I’ve been posting them on FB and have already had some sople ask about buying. I’m really enjoying it now, but I’m thinking it would be good to seek them eventually. Thank you for your expert advice!
You're so very welcome! My husband and I love Orlando!!! It's so warm in the winter time!! We have several inches of snow on the ground right now, so some sunshine and warm weather sounds wonderful! So glad you are enjoying amigurumi and your students as well! ❤️❤️❤️
This was very helpful. I also add the price of shipping into my total price. At the moment I don't offer international purchasing though. I never thought I would sell any of my amigurami creations, but then I did and I started to realize I had to keep track. I decided to time myself and have a per hour price which is the minimum wage in the state I live in. So far it's working just fine. My issue now is just scaling down... The first time I set out to make something new like a teddy bear or a dog or a turtle, it ends up being a lot bigger than I originally from. I would like to scale down so I can lower the price and offer varying sizes of things I make. Thank you for your help.
You're so very welcome! I have found that it's a lot of trial and error to figure out what works for you! Sounds like you're very successful already! 😊
Thanks for the ideas. I see a spreadsheet for this to help me make it easier. I know about how many hours I spend because I use Knit Companion. This has been so helpful for my idea of a knitting shop. Still in the idea process but your UA-cam videos have been very helpful!
Excellent Information! I am totally enjoying your videos! So impressed with your honesty and willingness to help others make money throgh their knitting and crocheting! So well done!!!
Thanks for all your inspiration and tips!! I just made my first amigurumi toy - Anderson the Seal from PicaPau 2! He’s so adorable and I want to make them all now!! I’m hooked! 🥰🧶
Thank you so much for the tips!! This helped so much. I finally had the courage to sign up for Anime Convention artist alley and was having trouble pricing my produces. This helped immensely and feel more confident about the convention in August. Thank you again!! ^-^
Alice I’ve learned so much from you! Thank you for all the useful information and the tips that you are always giving us! I really appreciate it ❤️ I started learning how to crochet by myself last year when the pandemia started and I just loved it.I got to the point where my coworkers and family started to order amigurumis from me!!! isn’t that amazing? I love your videos 💕 blessings
I like the easy, medium, difficult system. Some people work slow, others fast so charging by the hour is pretty much too cumbersome. Especially when you are selling. Your system would work for wearables too.
I have sold a lot over the years, l have always used the full price on the yarn not if it was on sale because the buyer would not know what you paid for it. Thanks for these tips! Binge listening while l crochet 🤣💜🧶✂️🧶
Thank you for this video, I've always felt that I undercharged my work and now I can see that's true, you gave me a lot of confidence with this. Again thank you very much. Love from Chile 🙌🏻✨
OMG I learned a lot from this video however I had to watch it several times to really let what you said sink in. Not because you were not clear in your explanation, but because I simply could NOT take my eyes/attention away from the gray bunny on the table behind your left shoulder. I love it. Is there a pattern, if so where can I find/ purchase it? My husband has been trying to explain this to me for years in our film prop shop and I have never been able to grasp it, being in the starving artist category. I simply do not know what to charge for my hand made art pieces. He is laughing and telling me to listen to everything you say. He really likes this video as well, it's very informative. Thank you.
I'm so glad you found the video helpful! I also have a full video all about that bunny rabbit: ua-cam.com/video/vcetf8ME4rE/v-deo.html Hope that helps! 🍄
One question I am not a confident knitter, I prefer crocheting. Does this pattern come in crochet? I have made some amigurumi stuffed animal toys. I am very fond of the Purrmaid by Hookedbyrobin. Her video is where I found your UA-cam channel, one of yours popped up as a suggestion. And I a so glad I followed it to you. I do know how to knit one pearl two. However I have not become proficient in reading patterns.
Sending spring greetings from Yorkshire in England! 🌼 What a super helpful and informative episode, thank you. Plus, I was able to have another peek at all of your little cuties sat patiently on your shelves, such darlings. Stay safe and keep sharing your joy 🧶🧵🌼
Your Chanel is very use full,I m not confident in crocheting, but I knitt ,I want to learn more about amigrumi, from where I can get these guid books? Please guide me . I love your knitting🥰😃😍🌺🧚♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️
Thank you so very much! Please check the desciption box for links to all the patterns and resources! I have a lot of videos about amigurumi on the channel and in every description box you'll find links to all the wonderful resources! Hope that helps! 🌻🍄💓
I so much enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing so much knowledge and also joyous and sad moments with us. I immediately fell in love with the rabbit with the pink ribbon in the background of your video. What pattern is it? It is so incredibly lovely, need to make one. ❤ Wishing you a wonderful year 2023! Warm regards from Germany, Mia
Thank you so much! That's a knitted pattern, it's the Wild Rabbit from Dot Pebbles Knits! Here's a video I did about the pattern: ua-cam.com/video/vcetf8ME4rE/v-deo.html 🐰
I've been really enjoying making my own made amigurumi toys i enjoy it so mush in so i crocheted so mush i strained my fingers on accident so now I'm waiting for my fingers to recover a bit
@@EliseRoseCrochet Thanks I actually got in today and got it and have been using it to reprice our blankets. Thank you so much love your channel and all the info you share.
Thank you so much for all this valuable information! Quick queston...can you tell me where I can find the pattern for that super cute frog with the big frown on your video? It's so darn cute!!!
Thank you so very much for this video ! I love crafts, and i always knit or crochet. It seems like i just cant sit down ( and stay there) without. Wich leaves me with an amount of items, i really dont need more socks, or hats, or mittens. "Sell them !" But putting a price on anything handmade is hard.. Found this helpful, but a quick question.. Since i ve been an yarnabuser for more than 30 years, i have a stash of different items. BUT, when figureing out the cost, i should think of what the item would cost me today, right? Thank you a lot for the lovely amigurumi tutorials ! Big hug all the way from Norway
Hello!! I totally understand! I can't sit without something to keep my hands busy either! One of the best things to do is to see what people in your area are selling handmade things for. Maybe there are local craft fairs or shops that sell handmade items. That might give you a good idea as well! Hope that helps!! 🧶🧶🧶
11:58 so I guess the difficulty level makes sense. Like I think labor is the most important but I def understand how weird or difficult it would be to keep track of that. There is also the added … difficulty?? Of the fact that most people aren’t paid fairly for THEIR labor so it would be difficult for the average person to buy something where someone was paid for their labor fairly. It’s a weird balance to keep where you want to be paid as close to a living wage as possible but you def don’t want to price out the average person who’s gonna be more likely to be your main customer base
So funny, am just like you, I enjoyed doing amigurumi that keep them. But my niece asked me to make some for her, she gave me 50.00 ,was just happy to make them.
@@yellowkittymlc Oh yes! That's a pattern from Khuc Cay! She has such cute patterns! Here's a link to her shop: www.etsy.com/listing/660117004/crochet-pattern-amigurumi-pi-and-po?ref=shop_home_active_35&crt=1
Then some people will say “that is so expensive” because they weren’t the ones who sat for hours doing something
That is true. Some people have no idea how much time and expertise goes into making toys. But thank goodness some people really do! 🐰🐰🐰
Then you break down the cost of materials and how many hours it took and you tell them: if I did this as a full time job I would be making $6 an hour 😂
Oml ikr
If you ask me a lot of folks massively underprice their stuff
You don't tell them anything. If they don't like the price. They need to move on. Everyone does not end up with the same finished product. When people do price way low, it hurts other sellers.

Just say, a long time
A few times I have written down exactly (give or take) how long a project took....and I realized that I could not prize a project by the hour. People have said that I should open a shop but that would take out the joy of creating what ever I want to do.

Yes, it would be too difficult for me to price them by the hour as well! There's just so much that goes into every toy! ❤️

I'm a little worried about getting into selling handmade stuff and feeling like I have to take every single order, especially if my prices are set too low and the amount of customers is overwhelming.
Once again, thank you for your videos! They're all wonderful, and you have a lot of excellent wisdom to share with us!
You're so welcome! I'm glad it resonated with you!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am from Australia, its slowly getting cooler here. Thanks for sharing ur wisdom with us
Enjoy your Fall! 🍄🍁🍂 I'm so glad you liked the video! ❤️
Good luck to you!! Your items sound adorable and perfect for a farmers market! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet Thank you Elise

Hi Elise
Thank you for sharing I was just discussing how to price Amigurumi if I ever plan to make and sell toys 🧸 so this was great timing…I appreciate your help and knowledge on this topic.

That sounds like to much fun! 🚐🌊☀️
I'm from UAE, Abu Dhabi, I love your channel, and thank you for sharing these very helpful ideas with us
I'm so very glad you like them! You're so welcome! 🌷💓🍄
@alya alhammadi have you started your business yet, I live there and I would be happy to help you :)
That's great!! Glad it helped!! 🧶🧶🧶

Wait your name is alice? Me too! So nice to meet a fellow alice 😊
I like the easy, medium, difficult system. Some people work slow, others fast so charging by the hour is pretty much too cumbersome. Especially when you are selling. Your system would work for wearables too.
Thank you! That's the only system that actually made sense in my mind! 🧶🧶🧶

Thank you.

@@shawnamoore4831 I don't believe so.

Watching from malaysia... Great explanation.. thank you
Wow!! Thank guy so much! I'm so glad you found the video helpful! 💛💛💛

It is very tricky to price handmade items! 🧶🧶🧶
So funny, am just like you, I enjoyed doing amigurumi that keep them. But my niece asked me to make some for her, she gave me 50.00 ,was just happy to make them.
Once the word gets out that you make toys people will start to come out of the woodwork asking for your service!! 💛
