- Yuvan Shankar Raja talks about the three distinct phases of Tamil film music -- the MSV era, the Ilayaraja era, the Rahman era -- and why, later, it's been difficult to get a composer who monopolised the scene. He talks about how, as an untrained musician, he is able to give raga-based songs like Aaha kaadhal. He speaks about using live instruments and the difference it makes, and using the Chao Phraya Symphony Orchestra for Pudhupettai. He speaks about the changes in his life and music after embracing Islam. He addresses the social responsibility of a composer, with a song like Evan Di Unna Pethan. Finally, he talks about his favourite songs of his father's in various genres.

Superb interview.. Thank you! In the past couple of days, I've come across few other Yuvan interviews and can clearly see the difference in content quality in this interview.. BR is the best movie interviewer out there now.. I'm a Rahman fan by day and Raja fan by night, and I love Rahman's innovation and Raja's longevity in music. Yuvan has a good mix of both these legends, and he just need good directors like Selva, Ram, Bala and Venkat Prabu to fuel his passion. Yuvan's humility is admirable. It would have been good to have few questions to understand his rapport with Rahman, as I feel both have mutual respect and admiration.

first of all thank you BR sir for this interview.i'v been waiting for this for a long time. Though I'm Hindi speaking from north India, but have been listening to Yuvan's wrk for the last 2yrs when a Tamil friend introduced me to Tamil music. Plz add eng subtitles as soon as possible. also i requested eng subtitle for the interview with M sasikumar. plz do that too.I love work these guys do & want to know more about them & their process, and you Br sir is the only sensible interviewer i have come across. Also do an extensive interview with Illayaraja sir, like a three-part series (sth you did with Mani sir). It will be an amazing to see that.
