  • Visit Sanibel Island, FL with us! Learn seashell names and look at our shell collection! Tell us if you go shelling and which seashell is your favorite!
Sanibel Island, Florida is the shell capital of the world and definitely deserves that title. The most amazing shells can be found there. Plus the water is warm, the beaches aren't crowded and the waves are small. We always have a great day with family and friends soaking up the sun (make sure to wear sunscreen!) and shell hunting.
When going to Sanibel, we always pack lunch, bring an umbrella for shade and our new favorite beach toy is a pool raft. The beach is shallow and the waves are small so floating around in the ocean on a raft is perfect! A couple shovels, little beach buckets, towels, lots of sunscreen, a rolling beach cart and you are all set! Great summer activity for the whole family! Or therapeutic to walk along the shore and look for sea shells by yourself. :)
Most important tip is to not take anything that has something lining in it. Usually the shells are empty but sometimes you will find a FL fighting conch with something lining in the shell and we just leave those where they are. A couple times we have found sand dollars but they are still living so we don't take them. When they are alive, the sand dollars are grey in color as opposed to white how we always see them in stores.
We have visited Sanibel Island quite a few times and always go shelling for beautiful shells. We go looking for sea shells in the Summer and in the Fall as the weather is always beautiful in FL. In our shell collection, we have turkey wings, shark eyes, flyspeck ceriths, Florida fighting conch shells, lots of little tiny shells, alphabet cones, Atlantic giant cockles, apple murex, rose murex, lightning whelk, slipper snail sea shells, scallop shells, lettered olives and some seashells that we aren't sure what they are called.
Hope you had fun at Sanibel beach with us and going shelling! Hope you go shell hunting too! Tell us your favorite shell. Was it a small shell? A big seashell? Pink? Orange? Brown? Love to hear from you!
