This was one of the more uncomfortable episodes to watch, and I ain't just talking about Vito Jr dropping a deuce in the shower. Tony brings misery to everyone who's close to him, Vito Jr. being torn from his family into a boot camp that's going to assuredly scar him for life, Hesh wakes up to find his beloved dead. Just a negative malaise engulfing the whole episode.

Betting on that horse race was one of the most degenerate things Tony ever did imo. Moments after his men gave him fat envelopes that they worked for, he throws it all away on a stupid bet just because the horse was named Meadow, right in their faces. Tony was such a POS in season six lol

Their envelopes were Tony's cut, none of their business once they gave the boss his taste.
His betting wasn't stupid, only bad luck really. lots of people bet and some win and some lose, doesn't make them stupid.
He had an uncontrolled volatile temper which wasn't suitable to being an efficacious boss.

I really appreciated the inclusion of troubled teen subplot, and especially showing him being gooned and sent away. It highlights that actual industry’s dangerous nature. Vito Jr inherited a shitstorm of a life, he is fatherless and mistreated and his spite is natural, obvious. Before he is even a teenager he is brutally aware of his father’s disposability and worthlessness to most every adult he has ever known, that he died not for moral transgressions that he knows he must have committed but for a perceived sign of weakness. His life is a series of painful and life changing revelations, he seemingly has no one, and a new life for him and his family is impossible. His normal teenage rebellion earns him the scorn and condemnation of rank hypocrites who wreck lives for money, also the only adults we see in his life beside his mother. His story is unironically one of the saddest, because no doubt he will be told he is the problem, he is the one who will really suffer for the sins of his father, the life that Vito died for and provided for him will have meant nothing and his very natural anger and sadness will be met with even more of his life’s trajectory being decided for him by uncaring people only out for money. It’s an important and necessarily severe depiction of a real phenomenon, and while most troubled teens aren’t the sons of mobsters, many are treated to the same guilting and lack of concern for the accountability of those around them. Vito Jr’s storyline takes a profoundly flawed and biased system to its logical extreme and challenges it in doing so, reminding the audience these characters and their actions are merely the most extreme manifestations of prevalent real-world issues.

I have a feeling that the school that Vito Jr is sent to is based off of the Elan school, the practice of basically abducting the new "student" out of their bed was a tactic used by them, as well as them being basically a cult that were highly abusive to the children they took in. I watched nexpo's video on them and it just kind of clicked when it got to that bit. Also, Elan was based in Maine and I believe that was where Marie wanted to relocate to, so it seems like it could be a nod.

Idk if it was said here or another video about this episode, but in this episode, Marie tells Tony that Vito Jr killed and skinned cats. Tony's reaction to that information is apathy.
