Wow people really struggle with perspective in this song. Matty is singing about the contradiction of religion, not his own personal beliefs. The song shows that believing can be like searching for planes in the sea, wrong and yet compelling, comforting and yet suffocating. It doesn't mean he suddenly believes in Jesus; it means he can empathise with those who do.
This was such an immediate and obvious meaning to this song when I first heard it. People seem to forget that songs don’t have to be literal, or at least literal about the person singing/writing it
Hellie Trenner I was gonna say, because isn’t Healy agnostic or something like that? It seems like nowadays he doesn’t outright believe in anything, but entertains or puts himself in the position of a believer

This comment hit me so hard - my uncle also lived with the secret of being gay throughout his life (he was also a Christian), and tragically passed away shortly after he finally came to terms with it and admitted it to the family. I was lucky in that I got to spend a few years getting close to him before his untimely end... that was in 2010. To me personally, this song is about the conflict between sexuality and faith. This is evidenced by the verses where they talk about being in love with someone of the same sex. Additionally, the song is ultimately about how Matty wishes he could change his beliefs to believe in God. He's said in the past that he envies those of us who believe, because they have something to hope for and have faith in, while he doesn't. The chorus is the best part of the song not simply because of the instrumentation and creative use of electronics, but because the lyrics are almost all in metaphor. The "fortunately I believe, Lucky me" is entirely sarcastic. "Searching for planes in the sea, now that's irony" is a metaphor for looking for God on the Earth. It's ironic to look for higher beings on a lesser plain. "Soil just needs water to be, and a seed. So if we turn into a tree, can I be the leaves?" Matty is saying he wishes he could change with this line. He wants to be able to grow from his old self, but he didn't have God there to help him as he does for believers so Matty wasn't able to make the full season change like the leaves can. He envies leaves because of their ability to change. At least this is what I gather from all of this.
In Dante's Inferno the souls of those who commit suicide become trees in Hell. Maybe Matty means that, especially when you consider how homosexuals are persecuted by their own 'faith'. People of faith are very judgemental aren't they?

I literally cried listening to this Matty aka Matt Healy has a profound intellectual use of vocabulary in The 1975s songs this is why I've been a fan of him and The 1975 is a favorite band of mine for years now.
if you guys wondering who's the female voice in the song, she's Pheobe Bridgers guys. Great Artist btw, and this is not what i expected from The 1975 new single. In a good way EDIT: Thanks for the likes guys, if you want to get in her music you can listen to her collaboration with other 2 female artists called 'Boygenius'. It's an amazing album
Thank You I was honestly caught off guard by it too as a 1975 fan but I know they've done features before but haven't always released them like Matty Healy Narcissist with No Rome I love that song. I know that Matty himself mentioned he would be open to features in this album hopefully Charli XCX another favorite of mine.
I can't describe how much of a masterpiece this song is by The 1975. This song is so incredible and I really love this acoustic sound. It reminds me of a Passenger Song. I think Acoustic 1975 is truly amazing and it truly shows the versatility of this great band.
This is absolutely beautiful. We all needed this to take us away from this crazy world for a few minutes. Thank you 1975 for making this fucked up world a better place by existing.
"I'm in love, but I'm feeling low For I am just a footprint in the snow I'm in love with a boy I know But that's a feeling I can never show" I love this line.
I loved ABIIOR and loved ILIWYS just a bit more, but this might surpass both, just with what we've heard so far. It's all over the place in all the right ways.
Elias Weckström I won’t jump the gun early but if they keep releasing amazing songs like this it will be for me: 1. NOACF, 2. ILIWYS, 3. Self titled (EPs included) and 4. ABIIOR
the part of this song that always hits me like a ton of bricks (especially with Phoebe singing) is "i'm in love with a girl next door. her name's claire." it's something about the way "claire" is listed BY NAME. there's power in a name, and in comparison to the opening lyrics "i'm in love with a boy next door..." where the boy isn't specifically named. that part is more passive and more directly about how religion oppresses non-straight, non-cis people. Phoebe's part has a more active speaker who shows that the details of her situation are important to her by calling Claire by her name instead of only calling her "the girl next door." Phoebe's part also implies that she and claire are friends who actually spend time together, and i feel like that is part of the desperation and yearning because the speaker likely has romantic and sexual feelings and desires geared towards claire that she has to hide the whole time they're together. i also feel that there are implications of sex guilt that the speaker has surrounding her thoughts of claire when she masturbates. maybe i'm looking too deep into this particular section, but it really just stands out to me. 💚
Wait this is so good especially because by not naming the boy next door, the perspective from which matty sings insinuates that they have never even attempted to get to know the boy next door because they knew it could never be regardless. so he IMAGINES being in love with the boy next door.
@@LemonSte Matty just did an interview where he talks about how most "features" are really just for commercial reasons and he prefers hearing someone's voice appear out of nowhere on an album instead of exploiting their name to get people to listen to it. It's like 4am here so I probably worded that terribly but hopefully you'll get the gist :')
I don’t think people are understanding that this song is not about Matty actually loving Jesus, it is in fact speaking more about why he is an Atheist.
Phoebe Bridgers and The 1975 are both some of the greatest generational talents I've experienced in my lifetime. This collaboration moves me in a different way.
El coro, el sonido, ese sonido de fondo, me llegó al alma e incluso, se tomó el tiempo de acariciarla. Esto es excelente, magnífico y si lo sabés aprovechar, te da 100 años de vida.
I struggle with my belief. I do not believe in God or that there is anything out there. At least thats what the logical part of my brain tells me. I do have the weird feeling, that I should believe in something. I would like to believe in something. Truly. With all my heart have something to believe in. To feel like God is there at all times. I would love to experience the satisfaction and love some people find in religion and their belief, but I feel like I simply can't. Its probably dumb and it's a weird thought, but I feel like the song resonates with that to some extent. At least it does for me
Taiyanox it’s not dumb at all! Religion can be a blessing and a curse. Some people find great comfort in believing in a higher being but the restraints put on them by religion can be suffocating. You can still believe in a god without conforming to the rules that often come with christianity
It’s all about finding what “fits” with your pre-established moral and ethical beliefs. Religion can be anything you want it to be!! You don’t have to conform to the traditional religions if you don’t want to, I hope this helps!
@@bettycarol6027 thank you! I'm not sure if it will help. Maybe I will try. I think I do feel a little pushed into the Christian belief, if at all. I don't know, maybe one day I can find something that just works and brings comfort. But glad to know its something not completely ridiculous
Hey! I don’t know if you’re even going to see this, but that feeling you’re having is 100% real! I remember growing up and my family mentioning God all the time. In my head I acknowledged that he was a thing that existed but I never felt it until I hit my lowest point in college. I was severely depressed, binge drinking, and thoughts of scuicide plagued me. A friend invited me to church and during the closing worship I felt this overwhelming sense of love flood my body. Follow that feeling you have! I didn’t overcome all of my struggles overnight, but today I am experiencing joy, freedom, and love like I never have before. If you want to give something a shot I would recommend watching messages from Elevation Church with Steven Furtick. I’m not trying to push you to attend their church (I don’t attend it regularly, I don’t even live in that state), but their messages are powerful. I hope this helps you on your journey!
If you want something to believe in try rational thought. Humanism. Empiricism. Scetpticism. SCIENCE. Religion is a prison of the mind, Church is the cell. Faith is just wishful thinking. God is a delusion and those who claim to know his mind or his will are simply lying. Born again people may feel they know his love but delusion takes many forms, especially when people are unhappy and need comfort. Express your spiritual persona by being kind and loving the world without being told you have to or should not. Feed an animal. Plant a tree. Live your life fam.
As much as I love their upbeat bops I love a stripped down song just as much because we can appreciate Mattys voice even more. This song is absolutely beautiful 💖💖💖
Waited the entire song for it to kick in...… Very boring. It's the kind of song they'd sing at a concert to give people 4 minutes to take a bathroom break or make a phone call.
What a beautiful song! The singles so far were amazing and each one has a diffferent element and vibe which I personally love about albums. Notes will for sure be a serious competitor for A Brief Inquiry.
Thank you for this song Matty and gang. Please bless my best friend who keeps suggesting me these gems. HE'S YOU BIGGEST FAN ON EARTH. He also thinks he has won a battle today with his biggest arch nemesis. God Bless Harry. 💙 AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
Been listening to this song for the past 2 years, then I finally decided to check her songs up having no clue who she was because of Taylor obsessively mentioning her. Turns out she's EVERYWHERE and I never noticed! Been listening to her for years and never realized until now.
As a Christian, it is songs like these that reinforce my faith more than mainstream Christian music. I also love Matt's song "If I Believe You". It is real and it is authentic. Major Sufjan Stevens, Seven Swans vibes. Jesus hung out with the people in his time that his believers thought he shouldn't have. I think God is so much more complex than the box we Christians try to put him in sometimes. I remember a kid asking the pope if his dad was going to heaven since he wasn't baptized, even though he baptized all his kids. And fittingly he replied, "Do you think God isn't proud of his son and the work he did?".
I listened to this twice and I was okay, I felt fine. And then I got up and started writing in my diary about my mom while I let this play and I started sobbing. I’m still crying.
Why your every songs give me Nostalgic vibes i didn't knew I needed .... Tranquil and Riveting... Like let's debate over meaning of life........ N never ever coming up with solution.... Thanks #The1975 😘 you made me calm.... Stay safe and sound
this is just the most beautiful and heart wrenching song ugh. to me it speaks to the almost unsatisfying “comfort” that is to be gleaned from faith that in actuality sort of serves to cover up for emptiness that you feel within yourself because of things you deprive yourself of, in this case allowing yourself to love who you do. It shows kind of like a false sense of security that comes with religion, but also a great loneliness
I really appreciate Matty's music that references religion. I grew up in a religious home, my mom was a pastor for a long time and both of my grandfathers are pastors. Thankfully they're all very loving people so they would never hate anyone for their sexuality, or life choices but unfortunately, they can still be a bit judgemental when no one's around. I fully believe in God, but I could never agree with the hateful Christians we see so often in the world. I've read the bible all my life, but never once have I thought loving someone (regardless of gender) was something wrong. There are a lot of hateful people in this world. They're the real sinners. I don't hate them for being hateful, I just wish they could be openminded enough for one minute, just to hear me out. Might be a bit silly idk. Regardless, I think The 1975 goes about calling them out properly.
Abbey A. hey! I just wanted to let you know that I deeply resonate with your comment and I view my faith the same way :) it’s awesome to see like minded people when I feel like there’s so few sometimes.
True Christianity is loving everybody unconditionally, beyond romantic love. Every spiritual guru woowoo knows it's all about the love baby. Feels good man. Peace

Criminally underrated comment
im in love with this comment
When Matty said: “I’m in love with a boy I know, but that’s a feeling I can never show”. MAN, I REALLY FELT THAT.
That line is amazing
😭😭😭😭😭 just took an hour laying on the floor with the phone on the quietest sound next to my ear and just dissolving. I feel like People was the page turner from the old - like a thunderstorm - and now there’s peace and quiet and you step out of the house with The Birthday Party and reach the hills with Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America 😭😭
It was 4:05 drinking wiskhey in nj at my bedroom when i am listening this song , at this time god bless everyone
Lucky
Such a peaceful sound for such a stressful time
Be yourself and be free.

the everyday melancholy of living closeted in the bible belt while also comforted by the simplicity of religion
In a good way
EDIT: Thanks for the likes guys, if you want to get in her music you can listen to her collaboration with other 2 female artists called 'Boygenius'.
@@NGFRESH a hyper/electro pop collaboration with charli would be nice
i was wondering why wasnt her name featured on the song's title? like feat Phoebe bridgers...?
@@yudhistira9453 I Agree.
I’d recommend her song Funeral if this is your type of music!
Thank you 1975 for making this fucked up world a better place by existing.
this has major sufjan vibes it’s a masterpiece I love
Thank you!! You took my words away!
This song is so beautiful 💛
"I'm in love, but I'm feeling low
For I am just a footprint in the snow
I'm in love with a boy I know
But that's a feeling I can never show"
I love this line.
That line is amazing
I feel like Notes might actually be their best album ever realeased
Elias Weckström couldn’t agree more
I loved ABIIOR and loved ILIWYS just a bit more, but this might surpass both, just with what we've heard so far. It's all over the place in all the right ways.
Love all of them
But music for cars on the other hand :)
Elias Weckström I won’t jump the gun early but if they keep releasing amazing songs like this it will be for me: 1. NOACF, 2. ILIWYS, 3. Self titled (EPs included) and 4. ABIIOR
Totally agree dude this shit is gonna blow the rest of their discography out of the fucking water
I cried after hearing this song. 1975 will always be my favorite band & THE BEST! 🥺💖
soooo good!
this song makes me want to cry myself to sleep and wake up never
good or bad way
@@d4rci359 good way of course
so you want to die?? Okay got it
These damn harmonies are mind blowing
it’s so angelic and pretty with the harmonies omg i’m in love :’) no more listening to the version on youtube from a year ago haha
This song is so beautiful, been waiting for the studio version for ages and it did not disappoint. Phoebe’s voice is a great addition too
Probably have listened to this over 100 times. Anyone else?
Favorite song in the album
„Just a footprint in the snow“ is such a great lyric. It may look like you are changing something, but the change you made isn’t going to stay.
OH MY GOD I SEARCHED MONTHS FOR THIS SONG!!! I only remembered "so if we turn into a tree could i be the leaves?
the part of this song that always hits me like a ton of bricks (especially with Phoebe singing) is "i'm in love with a girl next door. her name's claire." it's something about the way "claire" is listed BY NAME. there's power in a name, and in comparison to the opening lyrics "i'm in love with a boy next door..." where the boy isn't specifically named. that part is more passive and more directly about how religion oppresses non-straight, non-cis people.
To love whoever they want to without judgement would probably be one of the best feelings in the world.
This is one of my favourite songs they've released in quite some time. I'm in love with the way the girl sings about Claire especially.
the studio version is finally out YESSSSS OMGGGGGGGGGGGNANSVDJEJDN
When your two favourite artists make a song and you burst into tears because this is exactly what you need right now.
PHOEBE FUCKING BRIDGERS AGAHAGAGHAGAGGAGAGA
Olly Keirle I ALMOST FELL OFF THE BED WHEN I HEARD HER YESSS
Is she the female voice? Why isn't she credited?
Just sublime.
@@LemonSte she probably doesn't care. which i love if that's the case
Absolutely beautiful song. I was blown away when Phoebe Bridgers started singing!
Im in love with matty healy 2020 god bless the 1975

had a moment of absolute pure happy excitedness when i realized it was phoebe and i don't think i'll ever feel that again
two of my top ten artists, one from high school and one from now in college i'm crying
same!!!
I don’t think people are understanding that this song is not about Matty actually loving Jesus, it is in fact speaking more about why he is an Atheist.
Phoebe Bridgers and The 1975 are both some of the greatest generational talents I've experienced in my lifetime. This collaboration moves me in a different way.
omfg staying up until 2am DOES pay off
florence greene 4 here😭
El coro, el sonido, ese sonido de fondo, me llegó al alma e incluso, se tomó el tiempo de acariciarla. Esto es excelente, magnífico y si lo sabés aprovechar, te da 100 años de vida.
Matty AND Phoebe?! This is beyond dreamy. ❤️
Ive been listening to this on and off i cant get enough of it its so Beautiful.
I can’t believe it’s on the album I’m so happy
it's so good!
I woke up to this and cried listening. Times feel so hopeless and and it’s so wonderful to wake up to beautiful music from your favourite band.
I’m not religious but this song gives me peace emotionally and gives me a feeling of hope that the world will get through this difficult time 🙏🏼💜
Why did I jump right to the like button 😭
Cause we didnt even have to listen to the first 10 seconds to know it was a great song
Because you’re a sheep.

So pure, soft and relaxing man
NOACF will always be the best album ever
Couldn't have picked a better time to release this amazing song
agree!
The 1975 and Phoebe Bridgers...dream combo 💖
Feels good to be this early
Thanks for the fun.
This is a masterpiece. I’ll never get tired of listening to this song. Thank you so much
Oh god I accidentally clicked a gem
proud of you
welcome to the 1975
Now fall down the rabbit hole
Waited the entire song for it to kick in...… Very boring. It's the kind of song they'd sing at a concert to give people 4 minutes to take a bathroom break or make a phone call.
@@henrythegreatamerican8136 lol... music is subjective man... I loved it
When i first heard it, thought i was gonna listen to a country music. But, regardless of that,1975 is still 1975. AMEN.
What a beautiful song! The singles so far were amazing and each one has a diffferent element and vibe which I personally love about albums. Notes will for sure be a serious competitor for A Brief Inquiry.
their voices blend so amazingly together
Oh my god I love Phoebe Bridgers
Ty now i know who the girl singing is
Thank you for this song Matty and gang. Please bless my best friend who keeps suggesting me these gems. HE'S YOU BIGGEST FAN ON EARTH. He also thinks he has won a battle today with his biggest arch nemesis. God Bless Harry. 💙 AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
don’t play with my heart like that
PHOEBE! I just found out about her like 2 weeks ago and I can't stop seeing her everywhere now! Love of my life
Love how Matty completely ignored our request of releasing if you're too shy (let me know). This song is beautiful but sir we need that bop too!!!
He would care - why?
their voice compliments each other so well they sound angelic😢💛
0:00 i love this masterpiece!!!
Been listening to this song for the past 2 years, then I finally decided to check her songs up having no clue who she was because of Taylor obsessively mentioning her. Turns out she's EVERYWHERE and I never noticed! Been listening to her for years and never realized until now.
"I'm in love with a boy I know, but that's a feeling I can never show"
love Matty being openly queer in the lyrics
:)
its conceptual
It's a metaphor

Up until very recently the Pope taught that un baptised children went to purgatory. Fact. Imagine the horror of mothers of dead babies.
Me: "Bueno, creo que ya es suficiente, ya es hora de dormirme".
The 1975: "Pues no mi ciela"

I listened to this twice and I was okay, I felt fine. And then I got up and started writing in my diary about my mom while I let this play and I started sobbing. I’m still crying.
So y’all drop this but not too shy I see how it is

Thanks #The1975 😘 you made me calm....
Stay safe and sound
Well my depression is cured now
Im in love with Jesus Christ, he is so nice
this song means a lot to me, because it represents the conflict between sexuality and religion. That is the conflict that I live every day...
this is just the most beautiful and heart wrenching song ugh. to me it speaks to the almost unsatisfying “comfort” that is to be gleaned from faith that in actuality sort of serves to cover up for emptiness that you feel within yourself because of things you deprive yourself of, in this case allowing yourself to love who you do.
Anna Marie thank you for saying something!! I'm glad there are like minded people too :) it's really nice to have a kindred spirit around here haha
We need more people in this world with your type of mentality! ❤️
True Christianity is loving everybody unconditionally, beyond romantic love. Every spiritual guru woowoo knows it's all about the love baby. Feels good man. Peace
This albums gonna be absolutely brilliant. Matty’s writing amazingly at the minute
