Learn German with our street interviews: In this episode, we're out and about for you in Düsseldorf on 11.11 at 11.11 am, just in time for the opening of the carnival season! We ask people on the street why they actually celebrate carnival and take a closer look at their costumes. You'll also see Janusz as an elephant and Manuel in the hands of an alien.

Und total lustig!
Wollte wissen wo er hat es gekauft? 😂
Ich dachte, dass er von einer anderen Person getragen werde. Aber etwas stimmte nicht, die Bewegungbund die Beine sahen surreal aus. Dann dachte ich, dass das eine Computer Animation sei. Und dann merkte ich, dass er einfach alleine im Kostüm ist und die Beine sind nicht seine :).
Absolut genial 🤣

Easy German is a fine program to learn spoken German. It (especially the podcast m) is also a great place to witness the conformity & non self-reflective eurocentrism of the mainstream German “left.” They really things they know everything and are bette than everybody. Their takes on international issues are emblematic of that narrow minded arrogance but is itself instructive. Thank you for reflecting the Berlin mainstream

Ich bin in der Deutschweiz reformiert aufgewachsen. Eine Nachbarin, katholisch, aus Wuppertal hat sich immer die Mühe gemacht mit uns Kindern aus dem Quartier einen Fasnachtsumzug (von Fasten) zu gestalten. Wir Kinder fanden es super, aber es verlief im Sand und machte in unserem Dorf keine Resonanz.
Meine Töchter gingen an die Steiner Schule, deren Religionsunterricht von der Christengemeinschaft katholisch geprägt/getragen wird. Aber auch hier im Zwinglikanton (Zürich) fällt diese Schul-Fasnacht, die auch am 11.11. beginnt nicht auf fruchtbaren Boden...vor allem nicht bei mir.
Januzs's und Manuel's Kostüme sind witzig ironisch deshalb sehr authentisch. Habe durch Manuels Gespräche wieder einiges gelernt!Danke!

That's curious, we in Croatia usually have carnival (which is also called fašnik, undoubtedly after the German term Fasching) usually 10 to 40 days prior to the culmination of the festivities, which in 2023 will be on 21 February, a day before the Ash Wednesday. Never in November or December, typically in February and sometimes March.
Yeah its the same here. The main celebrations take place in February, but they start the festivities on 11.11. - and then they have different indoor traditions and festivities in the local carnival clubs before its taken to the street again in February :)

America, Poland, U.K, France and Belgium remember the fallen soldiers on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the eleventh month. This is because the First World War ended at that time. Very strange coincidence that carnival should begin at exactly this time

Yes, it is kind of surprising! In Canada it's a national holiday (we call it Remembrance Day), and most businesses are closed. There are services at memorials all across the country to remember those who died in all wars. People wear red poppies for about a week beforehand and at 11am, 2 minutes silence is observed. A verse from a poem - 'They shall not grow old' - is often read.
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
The date was chosen of course right after the end of World War I, and it has become the day to remember the dead from all wars.
@@robadr13 yes, exactly the same in the UK, very solemn day and the weeks leading up to it. Quite jarring to see the former enemy having fun on that day and the exact timing of the 11th hour of the 11th day is the exact time we remember the war ending. Crazy
It's Remembrance Day in Australia and New Zealand too. We used to have a minute's silence at school and in workplaces at 11am on 11/11. The tradition seems to be fading in recent years though.

Of course you can ! It's about 2 years that I'm learning german with duolingo and I can speak and understand german really simple in an intermediate level .
But remember you need to practice everyday day and watch german videos to get a better result.😊
Curious, I wasn't expecting to hear about a big celebration linked to that time and date. In the UK we commemorate those lost in war particularly WWI and WWII on 11th November at 11am as that is the date and time in 1918 when WWI ended. We call it Armistice Day. I presume Carnival pre-dates that? I wonder if there is a link between them.
Yeah... I was thinking the same thing. In Canada, we call it Remembrance Day. And in the U.S., we call it Veterans Day... Interesting...
We have our own Remembrance Day ("Volkstrauertag") which is always on a Sunday, two weeks before Advent, and on that day we commemorate the lost lives in WWI, WWII and other wars after that.

Yes, Karneval predates Armistice day by approx. 100 years - there are different (and quite interesting) theories as to why the date and time were picked.
Germany has an equivalent for that Armistice Day - it's the Volkstrauertag which takes place on the Sunday two week before the first of Advent - so around mid November. It was instated in 1925 and on that day Germans remember the dead from all the wars.

Januszs Traumstunde wäre natürlich auch ein cooler Rubrikname für den Podcast.

Wenn ich korrekt verstanden habe, Karneval wird bis im Februar gefeiert?? Als ich Deutsch als Muttersprache gelernt habe, haben wir Karneval (oder Fasching) direkt im Februar gefeiert, gar nicht im November.
Im November fängt die Saison an und im Februar endet sie mit Aschermittwoch. Kurz davor sind nochmal mehrere Feierlichkeiten. ☺️

"Lucky number" or "special number" would be the most compact way to approximate the original meaning. "Repeating number" could also work, provided a little additional context is added: "Weil die 11 eine Schnapzahl ist, und wir gerne Schnaps trinken." = "Because repeating numbers are lucky, we like to toast them with a little schnapps."
